There was 'group dating' over here a long time back, in the 40's and 50's onward. Groups of couples used to go to pubs or dance-halls in the wartime and by the end of the evening they'd either filtered away to dark corners, swapped partners or fallen out. In post-war Britain they went by train or bus to seaside resorts for the day (after the mines had been cleared from the east coast beaches) and before long were festooned with seaside flotsam - streamers, 'kiss-me-quick' hats and T-shirts with silly slogans across the fronts - and paired off under the pier or in cinemas. In the 60's large groups of couples (Mods) roared off on their motor scooters down to Brighton, where they met up with bikers (Rockers) and had a scrap on the sea-front, throwing deck-chairs and all manner of things that weren't screwed down - even some that were! - before the Cops stepped in (the police were braver back then). You don't see it any more, just little 'gaggles' of boys and girls and not necessarily in equal numbers. Sign of the times...A-ahh
