A Special Glass Gets Broken

Charlyn June has been writing since her elementary grades. She is a freelance writer who writes any topic from her clients.

“A special glass gets broken and a delicate hand takes courage and tries to fix it.”

Everything happens anytime it is meant to be. Like a bomb which is programmed to explode in a certain period of time; or, like a special event which was planned to happen in a selected date; or, an accident which was never expected to occur.

She woke up that morning, rushed to the bathroom and took a shower. It’s already 7 o’clock and she’s going to be late for work. Today is a big day. She has to get herself ready, get the office ready, check the food to be served, the table covers, and even the spoons, forks, and plates if they’re in proper places. She has to check also the floor if it was properly polished, change the curtains, and fix the chairs…… She has no time for breakfast and needs to get a ride for work. The conference will be starting in two hours.

On the other side of the story, John is having a trouble with his shoelaces. He needs to be at work before 8 o’clock. And he is having a headache due to a late-night out with cousins. They invited him for a drink yesterday and he ended up getting drunk. As he waited for his ride, he couldn't keep himself to think of Annie, the woman he thought he’d be with for the rest of his life. Annie is a simple and smart girl who showed him how wonderful life is. They had been together for more than two years. They have shared lots of memories, happy and sad. The saddest scene suddenly enters his mind….

It was late in the evening, and Annie was waiting for John to call. They call each other and share their day to day stories before she goes to bed. She was crazily worried and can’t keep herself from thinking for possible reasons why John isn't answering her calls. Maybe he’s still at work… or maybe he is in trouble… or, maybe he is out with his friends again! She feels so upset, prayed that John is safe and went to bed. John is really out with his friends. He just got out of the bus from work when one of his friends called him, he is celebrating his birthday. He is about to call Annie to tell her he’s going out with them when he suddenly realized that she would surely get mad at him. She doesn't like him smoke and drink and they have always argued about these things. He then decided to call her later as soon as he gets home. Time went by so fast and John got drunk. He forgot he should call Annie.

He woke up the next morning with a slight headache, checked his phone and saw that he has numbers of messages in the voice mail As he went to the kitchen for a glass of water, he heard a message from Annie. She seems to be so upset and angry saying, “I’m sorry, John. We really have to talk things over. I’m already done with understanding what you really want with your life. I’m really tired of your alibis! I think we should better end things up…” He suddenly feels so numb; a terrible pain struck his heard as if it was pricked with a needle in its centermost part. He rushed to his phone, touching his glass of water making it fall on the floor and got broken into pieces. He dialed Annie’s phone number and hears no one but an answering machine. He left her a message, “I don’t want to do this…. Please talk to me… I love you so much!”

His imagination was disturbed when a bus stopped in front of him. He suddenly found himself back in the present. It has been three months since he last heard Annie’s voice and he still feels the same terrible pain. He reached work, rushed in front of the Employees’ Daily Time Record Chart. He did not notice a girl also rushing and is carrying a pile of curtains which nearly covered her eyes. They bumped with each other making the curtains to fall. He asked for an apology and offered to help her but the girl refused and just smiled at him. They headed to check for their DTR cards and saw that the clock just stroked to “8:01”. They’re both late, and they just sighed. They proceeded for work, got themselves busy and forgot what had happened.

It was 4 o’clock in the afternoon, John just got back from a coffee break when he saw a yellow post-it note on his table with a written message:

He was surprised and thought it was just some kind of a joke from one of his officemates. He later finds out that it was Carol, the girl he bumped with the other day. They became good friends and finds himself so comfortable talking with her. They shared common thoughts and interests, shared stories they both laughed at and he later finds himself sharing with her his secrets and even his heartache on the breakup with Annie. Carol acted as his older sister, as she mentioned in the note. She gave him pieces of advice, told him stories he could learn from , encouraged him to keep fighting and to stay strong and have hope that someday, Annie will be back in his life.

A month passed away and a terrible news reached John. A friend told him that Annie has got a new boyfriend. He felt so weak that time as if it was the end of the world to him. He called Carol and shared the news. He gets drunk so often which has affected Carol so much. She remembered the time when she was in the same situation as John ten years ago.

Carol just turned nineteen and she has to go out of town to find a job, leaving her boyfriend behind. After a year of their long distance relationship, her boyfriend decided to break up with her. She was so hurt and distressed about it and turned out hurting herself whenever she feels upset because of the breakup.

Carol’s phone rang and saw it was John calling. She answered it and heard him crying and telling her he wants to die. She felt so sad for him because she knows how he feels at that moment. If only she could do something to help him forget what just happened. All she could do is to calm him down. She repeated that a broken heart isn’t worth destroying his life, that he has still lots of friends and a family who cares for and love him. And that he still have numbers of goals to achieve in his life.

Their friendship grew stronger. John also comforted Carol in times of her sufferings or whenever she feels down. They never forgot to pray for each other, and wished and hoped that someday, they will get over each trial that comes their way.

A year passed, and John has totally moved on. Carol stayed as his older sister as ever ready to comfort him. John then tried to open his heart again for a new love and met Jenny, an innocently beautiful girl at work. He fell in love with her and decided to court her. Carol was so happy seeing John smile a “real” smile. She can’t forget the first time he saw him. That was more than a year ago and she noticed that behind his smiles, he is hiding something. That made her write the note that John saw on his table on the day they bumped with each other.

Thanks for commenting on my new hub! Just a couple of things- it seems you switch from present to past tense a lot in this story, I'm not sure if that's intentional or not so I thought I'd point it out. Also, I'm not sure if Annie breaking up with John over not calling her would be realistic? Unless she was overly sensitive, or maybe it was just the final straw? Wasn't sure when I read it. Otherwise, a very cute story, I liked the use of the note that Carol left for John, I wish I saw more things like that in life.
