Dating Advice For Men After Divorce

Are you recently divorced? Considering reentering the dating scene? Then there are some things you should think about.

Obviously, a divorce can be a traumatic affair for all involved, and plunging back into the dating waters too soon after a divorce can be more than many divorcees, men or women, are prepared to deal with.

Although you are the only one who can make a true judgment about when you're ready to start dating again after a divorce, here are some things to keep in mind before going on that first date.

1. Are you ready to start dating yet?

This will require you to evaluate your own emotions and determine exactly what you are looking for after divorce.

You are the only one who can really answer this question, but one of the things to consider is why you wish to start dating again. Is it to cure that feeling of loneliness, to fill the void left by your divorce?

In such a scenario, you may not be ready yet, because those you date may not be able to meet your expectations, especially if you are not sure what you want out of a relationship. If you carefully consider your goals, it can aid you in making an informed decision about reentering the dating scene.

2. How confident are you about dating new people?

For a lot of people, getting through a divorce is hard enough. You need to decide whether you are ready to once again deal with somebody on such an emotional level.

One thing you will need to determine is whether your confidence level is high enough that any letdown or rejection you experience in dating will not adversely affect your emotional state.

3. What kind of person do you want to date?

Your first impulse may be to find someone who is the exact opposite of your former spouse. While this may sound good on the surface, it is probably not the wisest course of action.

After all, you were attracted to your former spouse for a number of reasons. Just because a marriage didn't work out doesn't mean that you don't like any of the things that drew you to your ex in the first place.

You should accept people for who they are, not for who they may remind you of.

4. Are you prepared for possible letdowns?

Admittedly, it will be difficult not to compare those you date with your former spouse. It will be even harder if one of your dating partners does some of the things that drove you crazy about your ex. Just keep in mind that they will not be aware that they are doing something that your ex used to do.

If you're attracted to this new person, then you should give them a chance. After all, they don't know your ex and have no way to influence you in this regard. You must give them a chance to overcome the demons of your past relationship.

While you should not be afraid to reenter the dating scene after a divorce, you should have a firm grip on who you are, the confidence to carry forward, and a feeling of comfort about the whole process of dating.

If you trust your instincts, as you begin your new life after your divorce, you are more likely to thrive.
