Essential Poetry: The First Time

The First Time, is about the beginning of a relationship and that time which will always be remembered by lovers. It is a time of anticipation and almost uncontrollable desires that form new hopes and expectations. The first time is unique, an experience that is never the same and will always provide the template to the emotional foundations of the relationship.

There is a first time, for every aspect of every relationship that we engage in, irrespective of whether or not that relationship is platonic or not. This essential poem by New Zealand poet, Pearldiver is written from the perspective of finding and falling deeply in love... caught up in the rush, and in the magic found, the first time.

The First Time.

The first time we kiss

You will know what love is

How powerful, a touch can be

Why your heart will always be mine...

The first time I reach out to you

You will not know when

Nor will your body know where

My breath, my touch, will explore...

The first time that we touch

Will be electric; like falling droplets of warm water

Exploding across the nape of your neck

Intensely searching, seductively, wet...

And the first time that we kiss

Your soul will know what it is to soar

Endlessly, riding on waves of slow foreplay

This love first made, beyond your greatest anticipation

Will cry out once more, from every sense, deeply fulfilled

The first time…
