Important Qualities Men Should Have

Updated on December 16, 2007

Qualities Men Should Have

For the past year or so, I've been pondering this question, myself. I mean what qualities does a man need to have in order for the relationship to be solid, or at least somewhat solid. Well, I've composed a short list of qualities that I find useful in a man.

Men should always have the ability to make a girl laugh. If a girl can't rely on her man to bring her up on a down day, who else can she rely on?

Humor in the sense that he is able to make her smile while she's crying. Not, irritate her while she's depressed by making constant inappropriate jokes.

But, remember that life's not all jokes. He must know when to be serious.

Be Understanding

Men that are able to be understanding when things come up in a woman's life, tend to be ranked higher up in my books than those men who only see one thing.

Yes, plans are great, but sometimes things come up. So, get over it!

Be Sweet

Be sweet... Give complements, open the door, pull out a chair.

But, don't point out that you've just done something sweet.

Men that can be there for a woman when she's in a time of need, work wonders in a relationship. Especially, those men that don't mind tears on their shoulders. Men that are able to help and give useful advice when she's in need have my heart.

Let her go first!

Yes, the one who goes first is the dominant one right?

Get over it men. Hold open a door once in a while. But, don't beat her down in order to get to the door first. Speed up a foot, but don't run or push her out of the way.

That's just plain rude.

Don't be Selfish

Pay for a dinner and a movie now and then. And don't ask for gas money.

But, it's not just about money. Don't be selfish with your time. If you're free and she's free, go to the park.

Don't be selfish about her time. If you're free, and she's not, don't guilt her into going to the park.

I almost forgot one of the biggies.... Be honest! Don't lie. Lies compile until you just unravel.

Don't eliminate a portion of a story. This part of the story could be what defines the truth or a lie. This scene removal could constitute as a lie, even if you weren't doing anything wrong, you set yourself up for her to think you did.

Grow Up!

Yes, we all know it takes men a much longer time to mature than it takes women.

Men, try harder!

I mean stop the immature, fart jokes. Most women don't like it.

There's a time and place for sexual innuendoes and jokes. And, that's not all the time.

Men, it's not all about you. Give her some time to shine.

Loved the whole tip about letting her go first. True!

I can't find the appropriate word to describe this article other than "perfect".

You really know what you want in a man. Holding a door open for a lady is courteous and respectful. There are times when a door needs to be pushed open instead of pulled. When I come to a door like that I always go through first as to not block the doorway.

Not sure if you are married or not, but I hope you find the man of your dreams.

      No apologies needed Kenny.

And, no men do not necessarily NEED all of these qualities, but they sure don't hurt. And they definitely help, in my perpective, when keeping a relationship together and healthy.

Okay, Whitney, I stand corrected. Immature jokes and manners are surely unwanted,

By asking why you stressed on 'should,' I meant: Do men have to be this way? But then, rereading your hub, I understood that you meant that men should be thatw ay if they want the relationship intact.

Aplogies, and another sorry for repying after 3 weeks!

Thanks for not asking us to be bluff, bad-ass, cut-throat alpha dogs. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many women want a man to be a soul mate but then ditch him for not being enough of a Real Man.

Kenny: I do agree that crying is not a sign of immaturity. As for maturity, I was speaking in context of immature jokes, manners, etc. I'm not sure what you're speaking of in context toe should.

Sensible advice. I agree with everything you said except that maturity thing. Men and women have different perceptions about maturity. Crying is considered immature by men, whereas it's the sensible thing to do in times of stress, according to women. And to me, actually! Sharing an emotion instead of looking for solutions is fine for women, but a waste of time for men.

If a man wants to go all out to support his woman, he can be all these things you wrote here. But a man should? Should is a strong word?

      Hello Whitney,

Your hub proves that even simple things need to be stated and stated well, and is an example of neat articulation. As coincidences go, I found myself doing a self-assessment as I was reading the hub. And, I passed with flying colours!! Just one question: Going by the title of the hub, are you suggesting that some, if not all, of these qualities can be cultivated by men who are not naturally endowed with them?
