Is My Boyfriend Controlling?

Updated on August 12, 2012

Is your boyfriend controlling? Has it gone too far? Here are some tell tale signs that you are in a controlling or abusive relationship.

No Means No

His word is final. If he says "No", there is no talking about it. You cannot express your opinions or ideas. He may even call your ideas stupid or put them down.

He’s Always Right

He can never admit that he is wrong. And if it is clear that he was wrong about something that you had no involvement in, he will find a way to blame you for his mistake.

No Manners

"Please" and "Thank You" are not in his vocabulary. No matter how hard you try to please him, he will never recognise you for your hard work or thank you for thinking of him.

Always By Your Side

He does not trust you to go out on your own or with your friends and family. He is always by your side and you do not get any time to yourself.

Physical Abuse

It starts with him throwing things, punching walls and public outbursts. Sooner or later he will turn his anger on you. It may be a push or a tighthold in the beginning, but it can lead to multiple trips to the emergency room or even worse, death. Don't wait until its too late!

Getting Help

If your relationship has become abusive, wheather it may be verbal or physical, and you are afraid to leave. Call the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence at 800-537-2238 or visit their website at www.ncdsv.org/.
