So Begins My Personal Challenge
If you’re like me, when you woke up the day after the Presidential election, you were uber inspired to be or make the next great change.
“…we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America the best is yet to come.” - President Barack Obama, Victory Speech, Chicago, Election Day 2012
My President spoke LIFE on Election night. And while the national election was very significant, I want to take the time to underscore the immense victories we made for human rights during Election Day, as well. When the ballots were tallied, Maine and Maryland (my current residence) became the 7th and 8th states, respectively, to legalize same sex marriage. WHAT A VICTORY!
Hi. My name is Marrissa Patterson and I’m a woman of faith. I pray daily, I sometimes fast when things are really bad and I attribute every victory in my life to God’s blessings. I was raised in a Southern Baptists church and was baptized at 13. But ever since I was young, I’ve believed that lesbians, gay, bisexuals, transgenders and overall queer folks should be able to openly love each other and marry one another. I’m a freaking conundrum.
I mean SERIOUSLY. This is 2012. Why ever would the rights of one group be infringed, based on some legislator’s discomfort with their relationship??
But back to the point of this blog. My challenge is as follows, I want to be a part of the movement that legalizes same-sex marriage in EVERY state. That’s right, all 50 states. So here goes. DAY 1 of my personal agenda:
I am a God-fearing woman who wants to regain civil rights for all Americans, including the LGBTQ. So get excited people, I’m ready to change the world!
