The Proposal (Poetry)
If I wrote poetry that came directly from my heart
Would the words I wrote cause you feelings to impart?
If I walked for miles to feel your warm embrace
Would you be there waiting with longing in your gaze
My thoughts are deep within me they fill my heart and soul
But caution intercedes so loves pain might not take hold
My heart is in the open in peril resting on my sleeve
Wanting the affection my mind can scarce conceive
Is it the softness of your touch, the calm beauty of your eyes
Or more the want of feelings and hoping you’ll abide
As an unexplored wilderness filled with peril and trials
This game of love and feelings that brings ponder and beguiles
Since the time when God first made man and he and woman met
Did he wager life eternal and for her all God offered did he bet
This creature called woman instilled with beauty and of grace
Man would give his all just to gaze in wonder at her face
But even as Eve deceived Adam and tempted Adams fate
Has man heeded to hearts calling and longed for her embrace
But to find a special woman, one of character and poise
The dream of each man’s heart that turns men out of boys
So this day I’ll pop the question of which I hope the answer’s yes
And find out if I can take your hand and passed your mental test
For what can man hope for as life bids him trials to overcome
If there is no one there to share when life’s test are lost or won
The future lies ahead and this point we’ll never pass again
But neither can we retreat to when our friendship began
As I come here now before you and kneeling on one knee
I ask your hand in marriage that together we'll forever be ©
