Tom and Jerry in Life

Updated on April 25, 2013

Recently, when my cousin was watching Cartoon Network, I happened to be sitting in front of the television and started watching Tom and Jerry too. I really used to like the cat and mouse chase when I was a kid. I liked watching Tom and Jerry as I grew up as well. With growing up, the curse of analyzing everything was bestowed to me, thanks to my genetic make-up!

Watching the different episodes of Tom and Jerry, I observed that Jerry was more to be blamed than Tom. After all, it's in a cat's nature to chase a rat! The way Tom suffered made me feel Jerry to be the villain, not Tom, actually!

Normally it often appears that Jerry is right, its his right to survival and that using his intelligence to evade from Tom is perfectly right! What about the law of nature? If all mice evade from cats, what happens to the equilibrium of nature?

In real life, I could see many Toms and Jerries chasing around - husband-wife, consumer-shopkeeper, girlfriend-boyfriend, customer-service provider! Who is Tom, who is Jerry is not the real question. Who hurts whom at what cost - that is the question and what does the society have to say about it? Is Tom supported or Jerry?

In certain episodes of Tom and Jerry, we can see Jerry troubling Tom even when Tom is not really on hunger mode, he might even be in romantic mood! What can we say about Jerry here? It's not survival mode for Jerry! Often, we can see Tom getting hurt physically and mentally, but we onlookers only tend to appreciate Jerry for his smartness! Is it really fair?

An incident that involved me a couple of days back. I went to a shop to buy a packet of milk with my mother. The shopkeeper quoted an amount that was 1.50 more than the MRP quoted on the cover. When I started questioning about it, the shopkeeper got mad and started shouting about electric bills and profits. It was pretty much like a Tom and Jerry fight! I leave it up to you to decide who was Tom and who was Jerry!

My mother asked me to shut up and we came home. She gave me this big lecture about mutual dependency and why I should sometimes shut my mouth, how it will affect me in a larger scale, he has a family to take care of, blah blah blah. What I just could not understand was, I fought for my money which was my right! The shopkeeper was cheating, but no one cares. 1.50 might be a small amount but he cheating that small amount from a hundred people will make it a huge amount!

Life is full of such Tom and Jerry fights. Its no fun for Jerry without Tom, even though his life is at stake! Its no fun for the onlookers if Tom wins- who cares about who is right! It will all end the day Tom succeeds as a cat eating up the rat, but nobody wants that day to come!
