Why Do we Misunderstand Others & Understanding Quotes

Updated on April 9, 2013

“The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding. “ ~ Leonardo da Vinci

“Life is the first gift, love is the second, and understanding the third” ~ Marge Piercy

Let us be frank, misunderstanding each other is causing many problems for us; many times, we blame ourselves for not giving chances for others to explain their ideas or their own viewpoints more clearly, before we give our judgement.

Some people miss their loves because of misunderstanding them.

Fortunately, understating others is a skill we can practice & do.

You maybe misunderstand me, that is related to many circumstances like:

- Being tired, being hungry, being angry, being in hurry or having stress.

- I am using a word that is not appropriate for you personally (maybe this word reminds you about a bad previous experience).

- Your emotional feeling towards me is not well.

“Folks never understand the folks they hate.” ~ James Russell Lowell

“A clear understanding of negative emotions dismisses them.” ~ Vernon Howard

- Your attitude about my own personality (maybe if you hear same words from someone else you will understand him better).

“Everyone hears only what he understands.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

- If you believe someone, who has backbitten me, so you listen from your mind & heart not from your ears, etc.

Robert McCloskey said, “I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”

Anyway, everything can be better if you keep in your mind that I worth to be understood, otherwise no benefit if you have decided already how you would understand me.

“A good listener tries to understand what the other person is saying. In the end he may disagree sharply, but because he disagrees, he wants to know exactly what it is he is disagreeing with.” ~ Kenneth A. Wells

The highest activity a human being can attain is learning for understanding, because to understand is to be free ~ Baruch Spinoza

"There is a great difference between knowing and understanding: you can know a lot about something and not really understand it" ~ Charles F Kettering

This is a very interesting hub. There is so much misunderstanding in the world. You are right in your point that we are so quick to judge before we give the others a chance to fully explain their views or ideas. We seem to be losing our ability to listen. I like the Kenneth Wells quote best, that is the attitude we should all develop.

Thank you for your great addition to the hub.

You mentioned a very good real example to support the idea of the hub .

I like the idea of filters which you have mentioned.

You make an excellent point with this Hub. Many people misunderstand each other because they listen through their own biases and prejudices.

As a lawyer I have had a number of occasions to witness this happen. During court hearings there is a court reporter that records everything that is being said. I have had clients claim that something was said and I would tell them, "no that is not what was said." The client is usually adamant that they heard it correctly. Fortunately I can ask for a read back from the reporter and clear it up. The interesting thing is that the client usually claims that what was said was a lie or somehow shows that the client is being set up. I believe the client is hearing what they already believe or suspect in their mind. Their filter actually changes what is said to match what they believe.

As humans we all have to check our filters. Try to make sure you understand what the person is really saying.
