Great lyrics that reflect love issues. Roberta Flack -Telling me it might be you.

Listening to this old school song it reflects such beautiful hope for love, hope for family, and hope for a new chapter in a woman's life to begin. "It might be you" - beautiful song.
One of the most profound things you hear her ask
Must I stop doing the things I like to do for you, to you, so that you can respect me?

That thought blows me away today when I think of all the games of selfishness/dysfunction that takes place in many relationships.
Has anyone ever felt this way? Is this a struggle today in relationships today? What are your thoughts on the question.

More than anything about older music I miss is the lyrics were important in most of the songs. Today it's just repeating one tired line to a drumbeat.
Although I'm not familiar with the particular song you mentioned by Roberta Flack I do understand where she is coming from with the lyric. "Must I stop doing the things I like to do for you, to you, so that you can respect me?" It's about having to change who you are.
Fairly or unfairly most people are looking for someone who will love them the way (they) "want/need" to be loved!
One person may say you're cold and distant, another may say you're "clingy". If one is not careful they could find them self flapping in the wind in a new direction with each person they become involved with!
If you or your mate has to change your (core) being to make the relationship work it means you've chosen the wrong mate!
The goal of each of us is to find someone who will love and appreciate us for who we are.
On a side note I've always wanted the kind of woman that Gladys Knight sings about in her hit song; "If I Were Your Woman".
They don't make them like that anymore!smile
