On June 12 - 13, Des Moines held its annual PrideFest, celebrating the LGBT community and the recent freedom of gay marriage in the state of Iowa. Put on by a huge number of One Iowa volunteers and assisted by Capital City Pride, PrideFest 2010 was a huge success.
Saturday evening's exceptional weather drew a vibrant crowd as they enjoyed local live entertainment from Pride Idol contestants, cabaret singer Sherry Vine, and actor Alec Mapa. An enormous parade went down the streets of Des Moines on Sunday, followed by stirring speeches from Carolyn Jenison (executive director of One Iowa) and Lt. Governer Patty Judge.
Over 2,000 same-sex couples have been married in Iowa since the Supreme Court ruling on April 3, 2009, including one couple that was wed that same Sunday.
