Which inscription would you choose for the one you love?

Updated on July 19, 2012

A favorite and meaningful way for couples to make wedding rings more special is to have an inscription engraved. Often a wedding band will have an inscription placed inside the wedding ring. However, many prefer to have the inscription on the outside of the wedding band.

There are a number of popular Jewish wedding ring inscriptions. Most are based on religious writings, which often make them meaningful for Christians as well. While Jews might decide to have the inscription in either Hebrew or English, Christians will generally prefer to have them done in English.

Inscriptions from the Song of Solomon

Some of the most popular Jewish wedding ring inscriptions come from Song of Solomon 2:16 (or Song of Songs): "Dodi li v'ani lo" or "My Beloved is mine and I am his." Variations on this phrase that can be used on either a man's or woman's wedding ring include:

  • "Ani l'Dodi v'Dodi Li" - "I am my Beloved's and My Beloved is Mine"
  • "Ani l'Dodi" - "I am my Beloved's"
  • "Ze Dodi Veze Re'ei" - "Here is my Beloved and Here is my Friend"

Another lovely inscription from Song of Songs is "Matzati et she'ahava nafshi" or "I have found him whom my soul loves."

Inscriptions from the Book of Ruth

Another popular scriptural source for Jewish wedding ring inscriptions comes from the Book of Ruth. The words of Ruth's commitment to Naomi are widely used wedding ceremonies conducted in many religious traditions. As such, they've also become meaningful wedding band inscriptions.

The most commonly used inscription from the Book of Ruth. Ruth 1:16 says "Ki el'asher Telchi, Elech" or "Where you go, I shall go." Some people might also add one or both portions of the rest of that famous phrase as well.

  • "Amech, Ami" - "Your people will be my people."
  • "v'Elohaich, Elohai" - "And your G*d, my G*d."

Psalms Worn on the Wedding Ring Finger

Another religious option for many couples is to have an inscription that refers to a psalm. As the psalms themselves are quite long, the inscription may be a shortened phrase or just include the psalm number.

The psalms chosen are often those that have some reference that can be seen as romantic or concern a commitment to the Lord. Some popular psalms selected are:

  • Psalm 45: 2-3, 13-14 - regarding one's fairness and grace
  • Psalm 33:18 - regarding unfailing love
  • Psalm 23:1 - "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."
  • Psalm 27:1 - "The Lord is my light and salvation."

However, some couples may also choose psalms that have personal significance. For example, Jewish couples might select the psalms associated with each others' name.

Other Meaningful Phrases from Nonreligious Sources

In addition to the religious phrases meaningful to both Jews and Christians, many couples decide to get wedding band inscriptions that speak more simply and directly to their commitment. Popular, secular inscriptions include:

  • Forever
  • Eternally Yours
  • Nothing Else Matters
  • All My Love
  • Love for Infinity

Whatever you choose to inscribe on your ring the letters and words you choose are sure to come across as meaningful and appreciated for a lifetime.
