A Whale's Belly

Updated on January 17, 2012
Jonah in the Whale
Jonah in the Whale | Source

I am caught in the belly of a whale

Swallowed up

By my own rebellion

In the refuse of the world

A dark place

Vile, putrid

I am Jonah

Oh God, deliver me

Where is Nineveh?

Great fish

Spit me out

A song by the Newboys.

Some are called, some are chosen

I have met people who knew from an early age what their life's work would be. This saves a lot of time and money, since one can narrow down the schools and subjects to take to reach their goals. I have also met people who switched careers often and never found passion in what they were doing. Finding your purpose in life is key to happiness. If you are radiant in what you do, it will attract power, and everything else will fall in place.

Then there are those who are called, like Billy Graham. They seem to have tunnel vision, driven to one purpose with remarkable dedication. Almost super-natural. These people have to follow a calling, and I believe they are chosen. It seems so natural and easy for them, but I'm sure the demands are so monumental that they have their Jonah moments.

The Book of Jonah

I love this Hub. The approach is so creative and fresh. Jonah sure got himself caught up in a strange predicament because of his rebellion. I am off to listen to the song. Thanks for referring me here. The poem is so great!

I also think about those people who knew from toddler age who and what God wanted them to be. One of my favorite teachers, Andrew Wommack, has never said a curse word, never had an alcoholic drink, never smoked a cigarette. He knows living for God is all about grace and not about the law but still has kept himself spiritually clean. Me? I wandered and ran most of my life, found myself in the belly of the whale and whining over the vine.

Thankfully, now I walk hand in hand with my Savior. Hallelujah! I am not whale poop!

Ann, Well done! Perfect image of Jonah in the belly of the whale, pithy humorous poem, great song by the Newboys!

I love the question, "Where is Nineveh?", which epitomizes Jonah's journey: away from the historic city in opposition to God, towards Nineveh in seeming compliance with God, then turning his heart away from Nineveh in harsh judgment of the city's redemption.
