Act of God, or man, or chance?

Updated on March 3, 2013

The terrible news that thousands of people have been killed and millions made homeless by the latest disaster; the Haitian earthquake has cause a flurry of discussion concerning why this happened.

Enraged by an evangelical preacher declaring that the reason for the disaster was due to the Haitians lack of observance to God, and specifically to Christ, the secular pundits on the forums have been incensed and fuming; that anybody could think that a whole nation could be destroyed by God, as some form of punishment for past sins committed, and the rejection of the Christian God in favour of voodoo, which is viewed as Satanic by the Christian church.

This article is NOT going to address the specific situation created by the earthquake in Haiti in other than general terms, for this article is not about Haiti, it is about the whole concept and legitimacy of generational curses and cursing.

We tend to see things in the timeframe that they affect us, so there is a general tendency for people to subconsciously look down on previous generations, who are seen, even if in a benevolent manner, as inferior to 'us'.

We who have all this technology, which would have been impossible to conceive of just one or two generations back from ourselves, see those who came before as deficient for their lack of understanding about what we all know.

The knowledge base has increased so substantially that the machine I am typing this on is more powerful than the computer that ran the Second World War for the British, and than the computer that sent men into space.

The first computer made.... now your Blackberry has more power!
The first computer made.... now your Blackberry has more power!

Deuteronomy 7 verses 6:11

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.

The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

“Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.

Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them.

But I type on a machine that was made redundant as soon as it was sold, and the newer version came out.

Many folk have no idea who their ancestors were, indeed in this modern world many have no idea who their father was, let alone more distant relationships.

But God is the same today as He has always been, and if you think our predecessors were primitive compared to our technological society, then imagine how God views us, when He has ALL knowledge available to Him.

Two generations back everyone expected to have some relationship with God during their lifetime, and those who rejected any notion of God were a mercifully small number.

Many may have chosen to keep God at arms length until they needed Him, but most accepted His existence and were comforted to know that SOMEWHERE God was lurking in the background, tinkering with His creation to keep everything on course and the world turning gently.

For whatever reason God chose a small obscure group of desert nomads to turn into the most gifted but oppressed nation of all time, He called them 'His chosen people' despite the fact that many wish they could be unchosen.

He renamed them, gave them a heritage, nationhood, laws and made them the pivotal point for all history to revolve around. No nation that has gone against them has survived intact, no nation that has ever helped them has lost by doing so.

Now many humanists declare He does not exist, and other secular folk view Him as somehow 'old fashioned', belonging to the past, of no relevance to the 'modern' world.

We see our generation and hope for the next, maybe reverence our parents and grandparents, if we know them.

God sees ALL generations, simultaneously, all those who have existed, do exist and will ever exist are known to God, all existing concurrently, not in some parallel world, but in timeless eternity.

God can stroll down the street where you live at any point in time and history.

Before you were born, before anybody ever trod the ground you live upon.

God owned it then, He owns it now and He will own if for as long as He decides it will exist.

He created everything you are and know about and will ever experience.

So don't think He cannot affect your life in a generational way, for God does not think in boxes of time......HE IS TIME!

Deuteronomy 5:8-10

‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Generational curses come in different shapes and sizes, so they are quite specific in how they affect those who invoke them by their action, or inherit them from their forefathers.

I say forefathers for some curses last ten generations, other only four.

Unfortunately sexual sin is a ten generation curse, so it affects most everyone alive in some way, either because you suffer from it, or your partner/s suffer from it.

Does everyone suffer from generational curses?

I would imagine so, let's do the maths....

For our example lets see how may folk would be affected by a simple four generation sin.... this will take you back to your great grandparents, which is fourteen people who could have been affected, excluding yourself.

Generational curses work on a simple principal.

Your great grandfather commits a sin that gives Satan an authority over him and unless repented of, over his progeny. God has made declarations over what we do, and of how some things bless us, and others cause us to fall under a curse, that will last (say) four generations; or until someone repents for the sin, wherein it will be cancelled on request; or the next generation reinforces it by compounding the sin, wherein it can start the clock running again for another four generations.

Or until someone repents of that sin.

To a secular non believer that sounds horrific and completely unreasonable, they cannot see any reason WHY a loving God would act in that manner. But in reality there are sound reasons to place limits upon the generational sin situation.

When we sin, without acknowledging it and repenting of the sin to God, we issue a legal authority to the enemy, Satan, who seeks constantly to keep us away from relationship with God.

If Satan can manage that for the (relatively) short period of time we are alive, then we are his and not Gods, by our own stupidity and choice.

The clock starts running from that point, and will continue to run until the sinner, or the their decendents stop the rebellion against God and repent of their sins.

The Jewish faith had a High Priest that went into the Holy of Holy's every year to 'atone' for the sins of the whole nation each year.

The priesthood regularly sacrificed sin offerings to God to appease His anger and wrath at the peoples sin.

When Christ came to earth, those sin offerings ceased.

He was the ultimate sin offering.

But of course those who do not know Christ as their Lord and Master have not accepted that sin offering and are therefore not under the protection that is offered by Christ.

Equally, those who do know God, but have rejected Him are liable for the consequences of not speaking out in Gods name against those thongs which curse someone or a nation.

Blessing or Curse, You Choose.

It really is your choice, and we need to make the choice and respond appropiately. I do not mean that we recognise our sin and ask to be forgiven, hoping that God will not notice that we have not changed, merely become aware of our problems and that they have been exposed.

Asking forgiveness for having been caught, rather than for actually being guilty as charged.

Joshua 24 14:15

"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

Haiti seems to have recognised that Satan is not the best person to give your authority to, and it seems that the earthquake has shaken up more than the nation, it seems to have shaken up their faith also.

Satan operates a scorched earth policy, he will leave you alone, maybe even give you riches and power, for as long as his position is viable and unchallenged, but when it seems obvious that he will be losing your soul, or the nations supplication, then he seeks to destroy, for he is the destroyer.

So the devastation caused by the earthquake did not surprise me, trying to explain to a secular rationalist world how Satan could wreak such havoc because of the nations surrender to Satanism, was impossible, hence the awaiting a more prone time when the accusers, the Satan whisperers, have fallen silent, chasing a new sound bite to try and denigrate God, before I published this hub.

God will not be mocked, and all would do well to remember that.

Our continued security is in Christ, it is our belief and surrender to him that protects us at all, and even those who do not believe, receive His protection from the worse elements of what Satan would do with your life IF he were allowed full rein to his hatred and venom.

But Haiti seems to be seeking Gods protection again, seems to have recognised their error and are turning back to God.

When the President cancels the Mardi Gras parade opening party to declare a three day period of prayer and fasting, we can know that God is being sought and will place them under His authority, their pact with Satan will be dismissed and he will lose his authority to further destroy them.

I thank God for that, and wonder where all those secular humanists and atheists are now with their comments that this earthquake was a 'natural' and 'spontaneous' disaster which had nothing to do with God.

It would appear that the Haitian people disagree with you, and having found that the Satanic authority over them was no longer in force, have returned to their first love.... Christ.

I wish them well, and hope that they now prosper as never before.

Inter Generational Curses are a reality for those affected by it. The cause is sometimes not known and the treatment is very difficult as far as i have seen. Only God can help these unfortunate souls to be delivered from this curse and find a normal way of life for themselves.

But being cursed is something very terrible and I consider it to be an affliction worse than Cancer. May God help us all. Ameen.

Cool hub, great info, I believe the foundations all around us are weak, we need to go back to how God intended us to live and love one another

      Hi Sanctus....

A bastard does not say, "Yes, I want to be born as a bastard, and be cursed."..... but the parents did exercise free will, and chose wrongly to do their will not His...

      The whole aspect of generational curses that causes the problem for standard belief is that our sin affects others, who are not themselves guilty.... they will quote bible telling us that;

      Dueteronomy 24:16

Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin."

Which is truth, but we are not speaking here of put to death, we are speaking of not being blessed and rather being cursed.

A look at our lives will answer the questions we may have about generational curses and their consequences.

If the evidence of a curse is there, then it makes sense to ask God to reveal the cause of the curse, and revoke it.

The analogy I have always used is that of a small debt that has been found against you in court.

The debt is put on a debt record, and you are 'cursed' by then having a bad credit rating, and even when you have paid the debt in full, the record will remain with the credit rating company UNTIL you exercise you legal right to have it struck off when you present the paid receipt for the debt.

Christ paid all our debts, but a whole lot of folk never check their credit rating to find out whether Satan is still telling lies about us, lies which we are judged upon (by the world) for our 'credibility'.

Think of all those Satan whisperers on the forums that continually make those snide remarks about 'how Christian we are' and you see the satanic curses attempting to chip away at our foundations.

The generational curses would add in a stick to the freewill machine.

Nobody decides when to be born, or how. A bastard does not say, "Yes, I want to be born as a bastard, and be cursed."

Just as a bastard doesn't decide when to be born, neither can they break the curse. Only Jesus Christ can do that.

Hard pill to swallow, but everything is done for the Father's glory.

      Hi Dave,

The verse that brings this is...

      Deuteronomy 23:2

A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

A bastard is definitely sexual sin, and the rest of the verse is a curse FROM GOD...complete separation for ten generations, UNLESS and UNTIL someone breaks the chain, someone does it right and comes to Christ, whereupon THEY become a new creation, and THEY are forgiven, but the sin will still have as many generations to run as the time lapse since the last event, i.e. they need to make sure that their children are not affected by the curse, as they will be prone to reinforce the sin until they are secure in the Lord.

Deuteronomy forms a dialogue between God and His people, who we are grafted into.

In Chapter 11:26 God tells us... See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse....

Then spends the remainder of the next 19 Chapters spelling out the offences that bring His displeasure and ending in Chapter 30:19-20 by saying....

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Yes Christ FULFILLED the old covenant and with Him we entered into the new covenant, we are freed from the curse of the law, the Mosaic law, but these are not from Moses and the 400 years Talmudic tradition, they are form God.

When we are aware of generational curses, we can negate the effect they have been having on our life, and the lives of those we love, both in the family, and in the body.

Generational curses are functioning still in our lives IF we observe that we are suffering from the curses outlined in Dueteronomy 28, rather than the blessings, i.e. our fruit shows us whether we are bless according to Gods word, or cursed.

Read Chapter 28 and see what side of the divide you stand, if you are walking in His blessing in all the areas He describes, then you are curse free, but any area that resembles the cursed section of the chapter, must mean that for whatever reason, those curses are applicable to our life.

Yes the bible tells us that Christ became a curse for us, to free us from the curses of the law, but the proof is in the eating, not the thinking, and making brave proclamations of our future blessing will not matter one iota if our life stays cursed and our 'fruit' is spoiled.

Must sleep some now, but think it through, because I meet many believers who walk in a cursed land, but refuse to get free from them because their doctrine tells them that it was all done on the cross.

When a man tells me that, I expect that he will be walking in Gods blessings.... I know a few who do, but many more who do not, our commission (Ephesians 4 12:13) prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Christ requires us to build people up, which is difficult if they believe that having 'accepted' Christ there is little more to do than try to live 'holy' and keep to the program.... you just stated that you had never heard of generational curses, well they were certainly set down in the bible, and very extensively...

I thought everything would be fine, when I crossed over from world to kingdom, and expected that what the bible said would happen.

Then when my life was not matching the Word, I had to decide whether I would believe the word or what popular Christianity told me.

      I chose that day....

Yes..."as soon as one repents of their sins and accepts Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and cleanser of sin through his shed blood and resurrection, you become cleansed and saved."

But how many Christians lives witness that, in all the areas blessed in the bible.

Blessing or Curse, you choose, that's what God tells us.

Aguasilver John my brother, I have never heard of Generational curses, so I am totally befuddled with this one. Who does the cursing, and how is the length of time established. You state that sexual sin is a Ten Generation curse. By who's standard? Who determines this, and how is it all substantiated by Bible Scripture. The only curse if you will, that I am aware of is the fact that since Adam and eve committed the original sin against God, all mankind carries that sin, and suffers because of it. But as soon as one repents of their sins and accepts Jesus as Lord and Saviour, and cleanser of sin through his shed blood and resurrection, you become cleansed and saved.

This was a great hub and though there are a few things I didn't understand I was fascinated. The concept of God is something that always blows my mind. I know Him and have a relationship with Him but still, this little brain can't begin to comprehend all that He is and it saddens me that there are so many who deny His existance. What are they gonna do when the Holy Spirit leaves this place with us who are saved and Satan is literaly unleased?.........

John, I started this read yesterday, after several attempts and I just had too much shouting in my head, I found today the same shouting and had to read most paragraphs numerable times before they got past the noise in my head and I will return and read again until I feel like I have received it's message in full. Normally I get 5 or 6 hubs read each morning and I could not seem to get past this one as hard as I tried.

It has seemed to come together for me better today but not completely as I have some informational referencing to do in it's regard. You have done a fine job of putting it forth and I have a short coming of understanding as if something is blocking it from my mind, Generational curses I understand. Seems like I have Generational Blessings rattling around in my head like a b b in a boxcar as well I just need to go and focus my thoughts through some Bible reading. Thanks for a stirring hub, it's these hubs that you write that keep me focused on positive study.

John, I was so impressed by the development and presentation of this very sensitive issue that I Stumbled it and sent it on its way to some notable email contacts.

Thank you for the substance involving generational curses and our everchanging and subsequently obsolete technology.

Makes ya wonder what we'll be typing on five years from now given the outside consideration typing will even be an option at that point.
