Act of God, or man, or chance?

Updated on March 3, 2013

The terrible news that thousands of people have been killed and millions made homeless by the latest disaster; the Haitian earthquake has cause a flurry of discussion concerning why this happened.

Enraged by an evangelical preacher declaring that the reason for the disaster was due to the Haitians lack of observance to God, and specifically to Christ, the secular pundits on the forums have been incensed and fuming; that anybody could think that a whole nation could be destroyed by God, as some form of punishment for past sins committed, and the rejection of the Christian God in favour of voodoo, which is viewed as Satanic by the Christian church.

This article is NOT going to address the specific situation created by the earthquake in Haiti in other than general terms, for this article is not about Haiti, it is about the whole concept and legitimacy of generational curses and cursing.

We tend to see things in the timeframe that they affect us, so there is a general tendency for people to subconsciously look down on previous generations, who are seen, even if in a benevolent manner, as inferior to 'us'.

We who have all this technology, which would have been impossible to conceive of just one or two generations back from ourselves, see those who came before as deficient for their lack of understanding about what we all know.

The knowledge base has increased so substantially that the machine I am typing this on is more powerful than the computer that ran the Second World War for the British, and than the computer that sent men into space.

The first computer made.... now your Blackberry has more power!
The first computer made.... now your Blackberry has more power!

Deuteronomy 7 verses 6:11

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.

The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

“Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.

Therefore you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I command you today, to observe them.

But I type on a machine that was made redundant as soon as it was sold, and the newer version came out.

Many folk have no idea who their ancestors were, indeed in this modern world many have no idea who their father was, let alone more distant relationships.

But God is the same today as He has always been, and if you think our predecessors were primitive compared to our technological society, then imagine how God views us, when He has ALL knowledge available to Him.

Two generations back everyone expected to have some relationship with God during their lifetime, and those who rejected any notion of God were a mercifully small number.

Many may have chosen to keep God at arms length until they needed Him, but most accepted His existence and were comforted to know that SOMEWHERE God was lurking in the background, tinkering with His creation to keep everything on course and the world turning gently.

For whatever reason God chose a small obscure group of desert nomads to turn into the most gifted but oppressed nation of all time, He called them 'His chosen people' despite the fact that many wish they could be unchosen.

He renamed them, gave them a heritage, nationhood, laws and made them the pivotal point for all history to revolve around. No nation that has gone against them has survived intact, no nation that has ever helped them has lost by doing so.

Now many humanists declare He does not exist, and other secular folk view Him as somehow 'old fashioned', belonging to the past, of no relevance to the 'modern' world.

We see our generation and hope for the next, maybe reverence our parents and grandparents, if we know them.

God sees ALL generations, simultaneously, all those who have existed, do exist and will ever exist are known to God, all existing concurrently, not in some parallel world, but in timeless eternity.

God can stroll down the street where you live at any point in time and history.

Before you were born, before anybody ever trod the ground you live upon.

God owned it then, He owns it now and He will own if for as long as He decides it will exist.

He created everything you are and know about and will ever experience.

So don't think He cannot affect your life in a generational way, for God does not think in boxes of time......HE IS TIME!

Deuteronomy 5:8-10

‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.

For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Generational curses come in different shapes and sizes, so they are quite specific in how they affect those who invoke them by their action, or inherit them from their forefathers.

I say forefathers for some curses last ten generations, other only four.

Unfortunately sexual sin is a ten generation curse, so it affects most everyone alive in some way, either because you suffer from it, or your partner/s suffer from it.

Does everyone suffer from generational curses?

I would imagine so, let's do the maths....

For our example lets see how may folk would be affected by a simple four generation sin.... this will take you back to your great grandparents, which is fourteen people who could have been affected, excluding yourself.

Generational curses work on a simple principal.

Your great grandfather commits a sin that gives Satan an authority over him and unless repented of, over his progeny. God has made declarations over what we do, and of how some things bless us, and others cause us to fall under a curse, that will last (say) four generations; or until someone repents for the sin, wherein it will be cancelled on request; or the next generation reinforces it by compounding the sin, wherein it can start the clock running again for another four generations.

Or until someone repents of that sin.

To a secular non believer that sounds horrific and completely unreasonable, they cannot see any reason WHY a loving God would act in that manner. But in reality there are sound reasons to place limits upon the generational sin situation.

When we sin, without acknowledging it and repenting of the sin to God, we issue a legal authority to the enemy, Satan, who seeks constantly to keep us away from relationship with God.

If Satan can manage that for the (relatively) short period of time we are alive, then we are his and not Gods, by our own stupidity and choice.

The clock starts running from that point, and will continue to run until the sinner, or the their decendents stop the rebellion against God and repent of their sins.

The Jewish faith had a High Priest that went into the Holy of Holy's every year to 'atone' for the sins of the whole nation each year.

The priesthood regularly sacrificed sin offerings to God to appease His anger and wrath at the peoples sin.

When Christ came to earth, those sin offerings ceased.

He was the ultimate sin offering.

But of course those who do not know Christ as their Lord and Master have not accepted that sin offering and are therefore not under the protection that is offered by Christ.

Equally, those who do know God, but have rejected Him are liable for the consequences of not speaking out in Gods name against those thongs which curse someone or a nation.

Blessing or Curse, You Choose.

It really is your choice, and we need to make the choice and respond appropiately. I do not mean that we recognise our sin and ask to be forgiven, hoping that God will not notice that we have not changed, merely become aware of our problems and that they have been exposed.

Asking forgiveness for having been caught, rather than for actually being guilty as charged.

Joshua 24 14:15

"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

Haiti seems to have recognised that Satan is not the best person to give your authority to, and it seems that the earthquake has shaken up more than the nation, it seems to have shaken up their faith also.

Satan operates a scorched earth policy, he will leave you alone, maybe even give you riches and power, for as long as his position is viable and unchallenged, but when it seems obvious that he will be losing your soul, or the nations supplication, then he seeks to destroy, for he is the destroyer.

So the devastation caused by the earthquake did not surprise me, trying to explain to a secular rationalist world how Satan could wreak such havoc because of the nations surrender to Satanism, was impossible, hence the awaiting a more prone time when the accusers, the Satan whisperers, have fallen silent, chasing a new sound bite to try and denigrate God, before I published this hub.

God will not be mocked, and all would do well to remember that.

Our continued security is in Christ, it is our belief and surrender to him that protects us at all, and even those who do not believe, receive His protection from the worse elements of what Satan would do with your life IF he were allowed full rein to his hatred and venom.

But Haiti seems to be seeking Gods protection again, seems to have recognised their error and are turning back to God.

When the President cancels the Mardi Gras parade opening party to declare a three day period of prayer and fasting, we can know that God is being sought and will place them under His authority, their pact with Satan will be dismissed and he will lose his authority to further destroy them.

I thank God for that, and wonder where all those secular humanists and atheists are now with their comments that this earthquake was a 'natural' and 'spontaneous' disaster which had nothing to do with God.

It would appear that the Haitian people disagree with you, and having found that the Satanic authority over them was no longer in force, have returned to their first love.... Christ.

I wish them well, and hope that they now prosper as never before.
