Mother's Ghostly Visit to her Eldest Daughter

Definition of Ghost

According to google, the definition of a 'ghost' is an apparition of a dead person that is believed to appear or become manifest to the living, typically as a nebulous image.

Apparition of Mother

I heard a loud shriek coming from the upper living room and ran to see what was going on. My twin sister was on face book and yelled for me to come see something our older sister just posted. "Get your cheats on for this Linda," Laura proclaimed. "You wont believe it until you see it." I could see tears welling up in her eyes and knew it was something big.

Throughout the years since mom and dad's passing, each sibling has had their share of heavenly visits. Each contact is unique to the relationship between mom, dad and their adult child. The latest such incident happened to my older sister this past weekend. She was standing at her balcony window when she noticed a wispy figure hovering above the lake. She captured the ethereal image which I've uploaded here. She knew it was an angelic sighting but after closer inspection realized it looked just like our mother. It didn't surprise her to know mom would make an appearance at this critical time in her life. She was struggling with addiction, just as my mother did when she was alive. Mom knew her eldest daughter needed her and made an appearance. Love definitely has no boundaries; even when we've gone to the other side.

Why I believe mother and father have appeared to me and my siblings

I believe my mother and father have shown themselves to me and my siblings because of our traumatic childhood. Our childhood wasn't always an easy one. I am one of five siblings, with my twin sister and I being the youngest of the brood. I have been told, that although mom and dad were heavy drinkers before we arrived, it became increasingly severe after we were born. Life at our house became very unsafe and chaotic as their alcoholism took over.

Sadly, by the time I was nine years old, I lost my mom to this insidious disease. She was only thirty nine years old. Losing a mother so young was one of the hardest things I've ever experienced. Dad continued to drink after her death, despite pleas from his kids to stop. After several years and going through treatment five times, dad was able to stop drinking for the remainder of his life.

Dear Colin~I am so glad to hear you have received the friendship card from me. You mean soooo much to me and I have always been so grateful for your friendship here. Laura says hi back to you. You naming me 'American Queen' is so sweet Colin. Your friendship is such a blessing to me. Cool to hear you've also had ghostly visits. I believe our loved ones are always with us in different ways. I've had many experiences which gives me peace of mind.

...well you certainly made my morning (and my day) dear Linda when I came home today after night shift and saw your beautiful friendship card waiting for me and it means a lot to me because I know of you as a person who has gone through so much herself in the last few years and I admire you and look up to you for being a survivor and having such great attitude which serves as an inspiration to those of us who love and cherish your friendship and status here as as esteemed colleague and world class team player.

Yes it is my Canadian thanksgiving weekend so I am eternally grateful for the day of meeting you here at Hubpages as well.

I too, after reading your story here about your dear mum, have ghost stories to tell as well.

Because I live in a cottage which is over 56 years old and the only two other people who have lived here are my mum and dad I would say that I've had at 6 visits from my mum over the last 2 years as she moves things around (my cats didn't do it -lol and neither did I absentmindedly -lol - so who else could it be) like flowers, and plant pots, and 5 gallon water containers, and the 'mouse' on my old desktop computer: it was wrapped tightly around the answering machine -a cat couldn't do that - and I am sure they are aware (my cats) because Little Miss Tiffy is now 18 and was my mum's cat and I often think my mum is inside that cat)

Always so wonderful to hook up with you my 'American Queen' lol

and please keep in touch my dear friend and please say hello to your sister for me , Laura

sending you warm wishes and good energy from lake erie time ontario canada 4:15pm with a cuppa nice tea and some ragtime piano music

TIMETRAVELLER-Wow, what wonderful accounts of your husband visiting you and others. Your story about your husband being bathed in white from head to toe is just like what my twin sister saw soon after our mother died. She was in a white gown and glided into our bedroom to let her know that we would be ok. We were only nine when she died, so I believe she felt bad for leaving us so young. Thanks so much for reading my story. I hope it can bring hope and comfort to others that have lost a loved one.

Hi Cyndi-Nothing happened but the apparition that sis thinks looks like mom, appeared during a transitional time in her life when she really needed mom. I think the appearance was all that was needed to reassure my sister that everything would be ok.

Alastar-Isn't it an amazing picture! My sister did add color to it which brought out more of the face in the shot. Our family was really comforted by this appearance. I really appreciate you coming by and sharing the experience with me.

Hi Thelma and thanks so much for taking the time out to read my story. I sure hope it was mom but it sure feels good to think it could've been. My sister thought it really looked like mom when she uploaded the shot and like mothers are, mom knew my sister had been going through a lot of difficult times lately.

When my former husband passed away, I used to wish he would come to me just one more time. Instead, he came to his best friend. However, he did come to me later in an extremely real dream where he gave me one last beautiful kiss to say goodbye. Later, a friend of mine "journeyed" me, and I saw him again. I was not sleeping this time. He was beautiful and healthy and stepped into the opening of a cave out of a golden light that bathed him from head to toe. He told me that he was doing fine and that I should not worry about him anymore. Do I believe your story? You bet!

Linda the first thing I noticed was the face on the lake apparition. I can empathize with you on the alcoholism in the family. What an inspiring gift is occurring for you and your sister. Beautiful, but I'm at a loss for any other words.

Your story is so sad, and losing your mother at such a young age must be so difficult for your family. I am sure your mum wants you to know that she is right by your side. I would be sceptical if I hadn't myself experienced visits from a loved one, though my visits were in my dreams, I have doubt that they were my son. Your story adds weight to my beliefs and I thank you and wish you all the best.

I am sorry to hear of your pain, losing a mother is always hard and almost unbearable when so young...

I have often dreamt of my grandmother in times when I feel my life is out of control and just seeing her soft knowing smile (even if she has nothing to say) can often be all my heart needs to keep me going

I so wish you could have had that visit from your mom. It's such a blessing when heavenly visits happen. I do think mom has been watching over us and saying sorry about the drinking. We are all human and have weaknesses but it took a lot of years to work through it. I know she loved us :)

I was sure Mom was in the room with me not long after she died but as it turned out it was the calender on the wall blowing out. I keep remembering and wishing it had been her. It must feel wonderful to feel sure and if it is I know she is saying how sorry she is.

Thanks Stessily-My sister told me that she actually colored the photo so she could see it more clearly and it did in fact make the figure, easier to see. She didn't edit anything else in the photo, just the color. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I just started crying and had the holy goose bumps. It was very comforting for not only my sister Shelly but all of us kids.

Susan-How moving that your grandmother came back to say to take good care of you. That is so touching :-) My twin sister saw my mom at the foot of her bed in a white flowing gown soon after she passed away. I continued to sleep during this visit, so I think the visit was meant for Laura. It is very comforting when a loved one lets you know their around. I realize it's a blessing that not everyone gets.

I've always wanted this to happen to me. To have my Dad come and pay me a visit somehow but it's never happened. I did have a dream one time that my mother was in. When my Grandmother died, my Dad saw her one night at the foot of his bed and she said to him "Make sure that you take good care of Susan."

Thank you for sharing this with us. I think it's wonderful.

Molometer-I got major goosebumps when you told me about the Irish belief. I do think mom wants to not only say sorry to her kids for leaving but also she is more able to protect us now that she is no longer in her physical body which was addicted to alcohol. She just couldn't be the mom I know she wanted to be. Through the years I have come to forgive and understand that mom loved us and it was the addiction, not that she didn't love us. Thanks for sharing the Irish belief. It gives me comfort.

    Hi Linda,

These things are unusual indeed and unless you experience it yourself it is difficult to grasp.

There are many things we cannot explain.

Nice that your sister had a visit.

The Irish believe that if you are visited by a spirit, they are returning to say sorry, for anything they may have done in life? Weird hey!

I prayed and asked God to show me a sign that my mother was saved after she died. Six months later, she appeared to me in a dream dressed in a white long robe and she reached out her hand to touch me and then the dream was gone. God had answered my prayer. Prayers are often answered.

    Thank you Lord.

Thanks for your comforting words Ruby-It feels really good. There are many families struggling with this evil disease of alcoholism. Isn't this picture amazing of the apparition? The more my sister looked at it and other family members, the more we saw it looked like our mom. It has brought us all much comfort. Hi Spirit Whisperer and thank you so much for reading my latest visit from mom. She has come to all of us in different ways. I know at this point in my life that she had a terrible disease that took over her life and she did not intend to leave her five kids. I had to work through all the feelings about it through the years. It wasn't about mom not loving us, it was the disease that had a hold on her.
