Angelos

Updated on June 6, 2014

Angelos or aggelos , is the name for angel in Greek, meaning messenger; also in Hebrew with the word mal'ak . Do they really exist? How are they? How many people have encountered them? Do they still appear or are they an experience of the past?

My mother had a picture similar to the one at the right of the guardian angel and I grew up feeling safety because she taught me that truth, not only by a picture but by her own experience. The Bible is the Word of God and there we find that angels are human guardians. You could read about this in: Psalm 91:11 "For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways ", Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven ." Acts 12:15 "You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, "It must be his angel."

Angels caught my attention and I started a collection of them; even friend's and family's presents were angels. Then I found out a religion was being developed honoring them so I stopped the collection. Why did I stop? Because the first and second of the Ten Commandments says: "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them ."

Angels are mentioned in the Bible from the first book that is Genesis to the last book which is Revelation. To learn of them the Bible is the best resource. I will share in this Hub my findings of the angels hoping it could clear some doubts in this theme. I wrote the Bible scriptures with their reference on famous pictures of angels. I don't think that art is idolatry; it is what you do with the art.

What are angels?

Angels are:

  • Part of God's creation,
  • Spiritual beings doing God's will,
  • Messengers of God,
  • Singles,
  • Some are "cherubim",
  • Others are "seraphim",
  • More noble than us but not omnipresent,
  • Stronger than us but not omnipotent,
  • More Knowledgeable than us but not omniscient:

What do angels do?

Angeles were created angels. They will not convert into human, neither human into angels. What do angels do?

  • Praise God

(Psalm 148:1,2, Isaiah 6:3)

  • Worship God

(Hebrews 1:6, Revelation 5:8-13)

  • Rejoice in what God does

(Job 38:6-7)

  • Serve God

(Psalm 103:20, Revelation 22:9)

  • Present before God

(Job 1:6; 2:1)

  • Instruments of God's judgments

(Revelation 7:1, 8:2)

  • Bring answers to prayer

(Acts 12:5-10)

  • Help to win people to Christ

(Acts 8:26, 10:3)

  • Observe the order, work and suffering of Christians

(1 Corinthians 4:9, 11:10, Ephesians 3:10, 1 Peter 1:12)

  • Encourage in times of danger

(Acts 27:23,24)

  • Care for the righteous at the time of his death

(Luke 16:22)

Have you encountered with an angel?

Not all angels are trustful

2 Peter 2:4 "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; "

There is so much about angels; but my purpose was to lightly inform of those great beings in our favor. We could sleep, drive and live safely because guardian angels aren't children's tales to get rid of the monster under their beds.

Blessings to all!

A wonderful hub. I have felt and seen angels, I know. One thing I must say: Many people get confused and think people become angels. Many told me when Jonathan was killed that he was an angel now. Humans are humans and angels are angels.

Well written hub my love. Maybe you should start collecting them again; as long as you don't worship them, it isn't idolatry.

      Voted up and beautiful.
