In my previous hub, Astrology: Jupiter Part One. I explained Jupiter as a planet its history, qualities, and traits of Jupiter.

In this hub I will be speaking of exalted, detriment and fall signs of the astrology planet, Jupiter. To refresh your memory a bit, Jupiter is the planet of long distance travels, spirituality and expansion. In a natal chart Jupiter often represents our values, ideals, and active relationship with society in regards to our values.

Exalted: Jupiter in Cancer

Jupiter is exalted in the zodiac sign of Cancer. Exalted in astrology means the highest and best position a sign in a planet can be in. It is exalted in Cancer because Cancer captures the true and ultimate expression of the Jupiter’s energies. Cancer is a water sign and of cardinal quality and energy. Cardinal signs in the zodiac wheel are Cancer, along with Aries, Libra, and Capricorn. Cardinal signs are the starters, the initiators, and the leaders of the zodiac. Cardinal signs are not stubborn and stagnant like the fixed signs and are not inconsistent or unpredictable like the mutable signs. This cardinal energy is good for Jupiter because it works with Jupiter, in an initiative, resourceful and productive way. In a way that inspires and encourages the natural instincts of Jupiter to expand and move steadily forward.

Cancer, as a water sign, is emotional; intuitive, and naturally connected to spirituality and a higher power. Cancer because it is of Cardinal quality (unlike the other water signs), uses it energies to start something, to begin anew, and keep expanding itself. This approach over allows Cancer in Jupiter to continue to expanding itself in emotional, passionate, innovative, productive, and inspired fashion.

Detriment: Jupiter in Gemini and Virgo

Jupiter is in detriment in the signs of Gemini and Virgo. Detriment represents a planet and zodiac signs most difficult and challenging position. Detriment doesn’t fit the ideals of a planet that it’s supposed to represent at all.

Jupiter in Gemini or in Virgo are both in a peculiar position. Gemini is an air sign, while as Virgo is an Earth sign. They are both mutable and both ruled my Mercury, a planet that governs communication, learning and education. You would think Jupiter would like to be with Mercury, but it is a bad communion. Gemini is an intellectual, cerebral and unemotional sign. Virgo on the other hand is a practical, grounded and logical sign.

These signs together are quite intelligent but they can be too smart for Jupiter. Jupiter is smart, but Jupiter does not allow logic and reason to define and their energies hold back. These two signs (Gemini and Virgo) will disappoint Jupiter and put Jupiter to shame because they have a tendency to intellectualize and put a rationale behind belief which is very limiting.

Belief isn’t always practical, and can be quite irrational and illogical. Logic, though important doesn’t rule the world. Belief sometimes doesn't make sense and that is ok for Jupiter but it is not ok for Virgo or Gemini. These two signs lack confidence and natural ability to stand securely behind belief and the unknown irrational things of life. All the while their naturally changeable nature makes them too wishy washy to stick to set of ideals that Jupiter needs to confidently expand upon.

Fall: Jupiter in Capricorn.

Jupiter is in the Fall in the zodiac sign of Capricorn. Fall in astrology represents a sign in which its position in a planet is uncomfortable and weak. Though this position is not the worst position it’s difficult to express the nature of the planet. The Fall of a planet will always be in the sign in opposite of the exalted sign. Capricorn is the sign opposite to Cancer. Capricorn is an earth sign, like Virgo so they too are practical, and grounded. Even so, Capricorn is a Cardinal sign and they understand the opportunity and rewards associated taking initiative and being innovative. Its in their nature to want to start something new and head into the unknown. They just don’t use this trait in the passionate, emotional way Jupiter in Cancer does.

Capricorn is not an emotional, passionate sign, but instead cold and quite pragmatic. They also rely on logic (like Virgo) and don’t necessarily rely on belief unless it is in regards to something tangible. Capricorn's sense of logic is different than the Mercury ruled signs because Capricorn use logic to get ahead, and for their goals and aspirations. Capricorn does not use logic because it has to make sense they use it to justify an action, a belief and a goal. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which the planet of limitations, boundaries and hard work. This makes Capricorn an ambitious sign, but also a sign that does not to take risks unless there is a tangible reward. Jupiter in Capricorn use its energies, not to expand or learn about life, but to succeed in with its goals in life. Jupiter in Capricorn does not care about expansion, truth or philosophy, so much as they care about hard work and responsibility.

Overall, Jupiter is about expansion, belief and fortune whether through travel, higher education, philosophy, religion and spirituality. Jupiter in your natal chart governs beliefs, values and how we approach life beyond logic and tradition.
