The Miracle of the Virgin Birth
The Miracle of the Virgin Birth
This is one of the foundations Christian doctrines are formed with, which is the virgin birth. The Bible clearly tells us here that the Holy Ghost/God impregnated Mary with a child by overshadowing her. This was not a physical act, but a spiritual act.
If everything is to be believed in the Bible about God, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus, then this is not impossible. We know Joseph was not the father of the child, since he wanted to break the betrothal, and send her somewhere where she would not be harmed.
In Mary's case, she would have been stoned to death as prescribed the law. She was betrothed to Joseph, which was as good as being married, but Joseph could not claim to be the father. The only obvious conclusion would be that she committed adultery with someone else.
What is really miraculous is that the angel of the Lord visited both Mary and Joseph. I believe the angel only appeared to Joseph because he was thinking about putting her away. In today's world, would be about the same thing as divorce.
The first thing the angel tells Joseph is not to fear. He did not tell Joseph about the Holy Spirit/God or what happened to Mary. The very first thing the angel said was "to fear not", which is the same message that Jesus preaches through out the Bible. This is so prominent that almost a half a chapter in Matthew is devoted to this message of not fearing and trusting the Lord. It is located in Matthew 6:25-31.
It is as if not fearing and worrying is one of the more important messages you could receive. It may well be that fear may stop or hinder any message from God trying to reach you. If you are more focused on what is negative and what may happen so much so that you can not see God moving or hear what God is trying to tell you.
You can not hear His message of what He wants you to do, to turn the negative to a positive. Only after the angel tells Joseph not to fear, that he tells Joseph to take Mary as his wife. Only then he tells Joseph that the Holy Spirit/God is the father of Mary's son, and what the son is destined to do.
