The Biblical Roles of Husband and Wife, Beginning With Adam and Eve

Updated on June 24, 2013

The Bible Story That Tells the Downfall of Adam and Eve

According to the Bible, Adam and Eve were first two human beings created and sent to the Garden of Eden on Earth. As the popular Bible story goes, Adam and Eve were told by God not to eat from only one tree in the garden, the Tree of Knowledge. They were both allowed to enjoy all the beautiful garden had to offer them, except for this one tree.

One day, a snake was possessed by Satan. This serpent tricked Eve into eating a piece of fruit from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge. Eve then convinced Adam into taking a bite of the fruit. When they ate the fruit they angered God and he punished them both and all of their offspring from then on. All of mankind was to suffer for the acts of these two; for Eve and all of her daughters, physical pain in association with child birth would be inflicted. All men were punished by having to carry the burden of providing for his family by means of hard labor, sweat, blood, and sacrifice.

The Bible Explains Where Man and Woman Came From

The Bible says that man was created from the dust of the Earth, and God gave him life. Man was then sent to the beautiful Garden of Eden to live.

The Bible indicates that man was lonely and needed a companion. He needed someone to share his time with; someone to talk to. Therefore, a Devine surgery was performed on man to extract a rib so that woman could be created from it. It appears that this procedure was meant to join the two with a physical bond, in addition to a social bond.

The Bible Explains the Role of a Woman

The Bible says that woman was made from one of man’s ribs. Therefore, they are joined. She was made especially for him to provide companionship and partnership. Woman was to be the one to encourage and support man emotionally and physically. She was made to give birth to his children; and to populate the entire world.

All women are gifts and as precious as angels. Women are often unrecognized and unappreciated in today’s modern world. This is not the type of treatment intended for woman. That being said, the Bible explains that women are to be subservient to men.

The Bible Explains the Role of a Man

Men are expected to treat women like the precious, delicate beings they are. A man is told by the Bible to appreciate and adore his bride. He is expected to provide, protect, and cherish a woman and her offspring. After all, they are personal gifts from the Lord God.

He is to treat them with love and respect. He is to set a good example and lead the family in the areas of spirituality, responsibility, and family values.

Very well done!! Proverbs has so many wonderful things to say about the power of a woman in the lives of her family! I wish that more people, including Christians, lived their lives according the Biblical roles that you outlined. I'm impressed with your writing! Thank you for sharing.

Bringing out the role of women in the Bible is wonderful. I think some people do not realize how much a role they have played through the years, starting with Biblical times. Great thoughts and well done. Voted interesting and awesome.

Thank you for writing this hub. So many men ignore this part of the bible, and only focus on the servant part. How can you look at one part and ignore another one? Very interesting hub.

      Voted up.
