CHRIST’s Humble Servanthood

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “ Do you understand what I have done for you ? “ he asked them. “ You call me ‘Teacher and Lord’ and rightly so ,for that is what I am. Now that I your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

John 13:12-15

This passage of John shows Jesus as a loving servant. The foot is one of the dirtiest part of the human body. The task of washing other people’s feet is a task given only to the lowliest slaves. Jesus in washing His disciple’s feet demonstrated ultimate servanthood. He washed all His disciple’s feet. He washed the feet of Judas, the one who will betray Him. He washed the feet of Peter, the one who denied Him three times. He washed all His disciple’s feet even though He knew that They will forsake Him during His crucifixion.

Jesus being Lord and Teacher, in washing His disciple’s feet demonstrated an exemplary model of humility. As Christians and disciples of Christ , God expects us to follow Jesus way of servanthood and humility. Whatever status so far we have reached in this life, in our work, in our community, we amy have reached the pinnacle of success, we have to remain humble and be willing to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus never mind doing dirty work in serving His disciples. We should not also mind doing dirty work for our fellow household of faith. In Christianity, to be a leader is to be a servant. That is Christ’s viewpoint of leadership. In Christianity, you will never become successful as a leader unless you humble yourself first as a servant. Christ leadership is successful because He humbled Himself first as a servant. To be a successful leader in our workplace we must strip off ourselves of pride and humble ourselves as a servant. We should avoid showing any favoritism or partiality. We must also be willing to serve those who acts unkindly towards us as JesusChrist also washed Judas Iscariot’s feet, the man who betrayed Him.

In the world system, the big boss usually lords over his subordinates and give great demands from them, without speaking in humility. The ways of the world is so adverse to the ways of Christ. Christ conquered the world with His humble servanthood. He has no military might to show to the world, yet His followers now from the time of the birth of His church could number thousands of millions. JesusChrist is the greatest leader who came into the world. And Christ humble servanthood caused the greatest impact to the world. No human leader has gained greater number of followers than Jesus of Nazareth.

True leadership indeed springs out from true servanthood and humility. AS followers of Christ, we have no other better alternative way of life but to follow Christ’s humble way of leadership to be successful in impacting the world.
