Catholic Beliefs Unveiled
My response to my neighbor who is a devout Catholic
There are many religions in this world. Some claim to be the only way, others claim that there are many ways to salvation.
However, there is only one way, and that way is through Christ Jesus. Only through Jesus can we be saved. We can not be saved by some institution or by buying our way into Heaven.
Neither can anyone pray for our salvation once we are dead. When we die, as we all will, we go either to Heaven if we are true followers of Christ or we go to hell. There is no in-between, no purgatory.
In the word of God we are told that Jesus is the only way. In John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
In the next three verses we are told not to put our trust in worldly things. This includes statues, beads, bibles other than the true Word of God. We are not to put our trust into anything that is not Jesus. We are not to lay up treasures on this earth. Only Heavenly things last forever.
Things that are man made will be destroyed.
Matthew 6:19-21
19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Colossians 3:2
2Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
2 Kings 17:38-39
38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
39 But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
Here in the next verse we are told again not to have any idols. Mary and the other saints are idols if they are put above Jesus and/or prayed to. Only Jesus is to be prayed to. He died for our sins. Mary and the saints did not. When the catholic church tells people to pray to Mary and to the other saints, then they are telling you to pray to dead people and by doing so they are made into idols.
Leviticus 26:1
26 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God.
Why are we told early on in the Bible, about idol worship? It is a warning to all mankind. Here in Exodus it is very clear about idol worship. Be very careful never to make images, idols or to put anything or anyone at the same level as Jesus or above Jesus. All we need to do is to Pray to Jesus, ask for forgiveness, repent and turn away from Sin, to believe in Jesus whole heartedly, to surrender to Him whole heartedly. If we trust in His conception, birth, life death and resurrection, then we are saved. Not through works or other people—dead or alive.
Exodus 20:3-5
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me
Here in this very well known scripture we read: John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Now in Timothy we are very clearly told that Jesus is the only way to God. It is not Mary or any dead saint. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to pray to Mary, or to put her at the same level or above Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:5-6
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
In Acts we are told again that salvation is only gotten through Jesus, and not by any other means or person.
Acts 4:10-12
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
I believe every person ought to read and study the bible. The bible is for all mankind and written for us to understand if we desire to. Salvation is a gift from God and attained through Jesus. He gave Himself up for us, He took our sins so that we can live and be saved. No other has ever done this. Jesus is the only way to salvation. By going through others or praying to others then are you not saying that what Jesus did is not good enough? That His death upon the cross was futile and irrelevant? Mary can not save you and a statue of her can not hear you. Statues of Mary are no different than the golden calves that people made in the book of Exodus. It is like Baal worship.
Exodus 20
The Ten Commandments
1 And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3“You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourthgenerations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for theLord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all thatis in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
