Decrypting the Bible
Progress. A concept that has almost been deified by the human species. Many have worked in its service, and many more have fed it with their lives. Millions of people have been sacrificed to its altar through the ages and not always by their will.
Progress has several forms. There is scientific and technological progress which modern man has served with plenty of zeal. The truth is that we have made huge steps on this track, but an even greater truth is that it has not helped us find happiness. Obviously, it has improved the lives of many, but as always is the case in this relative world we live in, that everything is conflicting with its opposite, it has burdened the lives of many more. Despite this progress, the differences and the gap between the rich and the poor of this world are much more significant than they were a hundred or more years ago.
But in fact, progress is nothing more than the external expression of man's view of God. So the only progress that can bring balance and prosperity is Spiritual, and that comes mainly through Gnosis (Knowledge), primarily the realization of our Inner Divine Self. Gnosis is experiential, but to get to it, we need help and guidance to come out of the labyrinth of the confusing material world. This guidance can be found in ancient texts such as the Bible, but it is mainly in a symbolic and allegorical form. A symbol represents an idea, just as the pigeon is the symbol of peace or the baptism –the emerging from the water– is the symbol of rebirth. Therefore, we need the exegesis of these symbols to understand the deeper meaning that will help us in our spiritual progress.
It is evident that there are some essential reasons that the Bible (and all the ancient spiritual and mystic texts) are written with symbolism and allegories. The main reason is that this is the only teaching method that can suit every person of any age and origin and at any stage of intellectual development. Let's not forget that we have learned our most essential truths through myths and fairy tales.
So, in this series of texts, I will try to give an interpretation of some parts and symbols of the Bible, as I have understood them through my spiritual study because I believe they can be useful diagrams of life for others too. Clearly, I do not claim to know the Truth; this is not my purpose. My intention is to present, to anyone who desires, the help, magic, and beauty that my Spiritual study has offered to me. I hope to be useful.
Israel
If we do not understand the symbolism of the word "Israel", it is difficult to understand the Bible.
God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall you be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he was called Israel. (Genesis 35:10)
The word Israel symbolizes each of us who seeks God. It does not matter if you are a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, a Buddhist, or whatever. If you believe and seek God, if you rely on the power of prayer, you are Israel.
When you decide that you no more can live as a slave in Egypt, you are Israel. Egypt symbolizes all kinds of constraints, especially materialistic ones. It means giving power to material things, is the fear that you are vulnerable to luck, disease and wear. It is your faith that your happiness rests on your material wealth. Pharaoh symbolizes the inferior self that controls you and does not let you guide your thoughts to God.
This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.” (Matthew 2:15)
But God promises His Son Israel that He can lead him back to the Promised Land, to New Jerusalem, which is the symbol of the Elevated Consciousness that is in constant contact with God and radiates Light all over the world.
He does not promise to be an easy way though, on the contrary. How many times do we start this journey back Home, but the "desert" of our passions, selfishness and wrong thoughts leads us away from the destination of our Heart, and we feel that we are lost forever? But God never abandons us, and if we do not abandon our faith in Love, if we put God first, then we will become Israel who is returning to His Father's house. God does not ask us to be the only thing in our lives, but He must be the first one. This is the lesson that you and I, who are Israel, have to learn in the desert of life we have chosen to live.
God does not ask us to be the only thing in our lives, but He must be the first one.
This name is made up of three syllables: Is-ra-el.
The syllable "Is" denotes the Feminine Principle, the Great Mother that creates everything and symbolizes the creative power of the Soul and the Mind. We will meet it in the name of the goddess Isis of the Egyptians, the goddess of euphoria and the rebirth, but also the Ishtar of the Babylonians, who is the Queen of Heaven and goddess of fertility. We will also find the same syllable in the name of Isaac, which represents the receptive state of mind.
The syllable "ra" comes from the Egyptian god Ra –the Divine Sun– and represents the Male Authority, the state of mental action and execution. A typical example of this mental state is Abraham in whose name we come across this syllable.
We need both these states for the balance in our spiritual development. When you are studying, learning and expecting guidance from God, you must be receptive, you must be Isaac. But when you apply this guidance and Knowledge to achieve something or cure a situation, then you are Abraham.
The third syllable "el" is the usual ending that declares God. It comes from the Hebrew word "Elohim" for the Almighty and Supreme God. We will find it in many names in the Bible, like Gabriel, which means "the man of God", or Raphael, which means"God heals", and many more.
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” (Matthew 1: 23)
This ending means the union of the Mother and the Father for the creation of a Third Authority. Thus, it declares God in all His plenitude, the Trinity. It represents the spiritual aspect of our nature and the balanced Soul that experiences its union with God.
This is your name. You are Israel, and you are the central character of this amazing adventure, because the Bible has been written for you, do not forget it. To remind you through this name that God has given you the power to create your world as you want it to be. To remind us all that we build our lives every day with the thoughts we do, the beliefs we establish, the feelings we cultivate. Thoughts and feelings are the materials, and we are the builders. We build as individuals and as a race, and what we build manifests itself as a physical body and as the world. Well, my dear Israel, if you do not like what you live or the world you live in, make your exodus from Egypt and return to where you belong. Create a new life and a new world. God has given you the power to do it!
I have been born to remember how it is to love without limitations!
