Different - Prayers!

Updated on September 5, 2013

Let us have a look at communication with God, defined as prayer.

When you get saved, you become a child of God.

What now?

What does a small child do?

They ask questions and tell Daddy or Mommy what they want, then Daddy or Mommy tells them yes or no, or wait.

Our relationship to God is the same in the sense that when we get saved, we realise that we know nothing and seek to learn more about God's will through His word and asking questions.

As children rely on their parents, so we rely on God to prvide and make our requests known to Him.

We need to take time to be silent in His presence to listen for His voice. As we grow, we learn to pray for others and to pray for God's will in our lives. The spiritual child will grow with spiritual food. This food is the word of God and communication with Him.

There are many different kinds of prayer.

Show me a Christian who does not pray and I will show you a Crippled Christian. You cannot be a child of God without relationship, whiich is built by communication.

To be a christian is to have a relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the holy Spirit. Prayer is our communication with God.

When you awake and thank God for the day, this is prayer. When you praise God, this is communicating with God and is therefore also prayer. When we worship God, we are speaking to Him and this is also prayer. There are many different kinds of prayer.

These are requests, petitions, consecrational and corporate prayers and more. Any form of communication with God is prayer.

Yes, we all start as babes and need to grow in prayer. When speaking of the quiet time where one goes down on your knees before God to make requests and spend time listening for God's voice, this takes time and dedication.

The more you do it, the more you need to do it. Well seasoned Christians can pray for many hours, while babes in Christ can battle to find the words to pray for ten minutes. Let's take a deeper look into prayer.

The prayer of Consecration (will of God).

This type of prayer is purely to please the Father. In practising this type of praye,r the believer must totally yield his or her will, to the will of the Father, come what may.

The believer must do the will of God.What He commands; we must do. Whatever He wants from us, even to lay down our life. In this type of prayer you must use the term "IF" because "IF" it is pleases the Father, and not if it pleases us, we must obey Him totally.

A nice example of this kind of prayer is found in Luke 22:42 when Yeshua (Jesus) prayed, Saying, Father, If You are willing, remove this cup from Me, yet not My will, But Yours be done. (AMP)

Our Lord Yeshua (Jesus) wanted to please the Father in every way. Yeshua (Jesus) prayed this kind of prayer not because He was requesting some need to be met. Iit was not a petitional type of prayer, but a prayer purely aimed to please the Father. The Father's will, must be done, because the Father's will is everything when it comes to ultimate success, even if there is difficult times ahead to deal with.

The prayer of casting our cares upon Him.

This type of prayer is where the believer purposely "hands over" all his or her cares into the hands of God. From the moment you have prayed this type of prayer, the problem is not yours, but the Fathers. You can now stop worrying because God knows all and cares affectionately for you and your problems. This type of prayer involves a Biblical promise and invitation to enter intoyour issues and problems with accompanied specific action.

A nice example of this kind of prayer is found in Psalm 37:5: Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass (AMP), Matthew 6:31-32: therefore do not worry, saying, what shall we eat? Or what shall we drink? Or what shall we wear? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

This type of prayer does not have to be repeated concerning some bothering situation, if you have prayed in good faith. Some people love to worry and keep on taking back their burdens from the Lord, as I have heard someone say, they are "champion" worriers. Here is an important principle: we will not receive more light until we walk in the light that we have already received.

God knows the level of your knowledge that you are able to practice. So we must ensure that we walk according to our personal level of Word knowledge. Many people feel that the battle and struggle is theirs, but God’s Word says that the battle is the Lords - if we walk with Him. Consequently, the victory is ours.

It does not mean that the problems have ceased to exist – they have been given over into the caring hands of God and He is more than capable of dealing with them.

The prayer of agreement.

This type of prayer is where two or more believers agree in prayer.

In Matt 18:19: We read, Again I tell you, if two of you agree (harmonize together, make a symphony together) about whatever [anything and everything] they may ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by my Father in heaven (AMP) In Amos 3:3; we read: can two walk together, unless they are agreed?, and

Lev 26:8

And five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

. In Matt 18:16; we read, by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

It is important to understand the concept of agreement before praying in harmony. A husband and wife is a very strong prayer force, if they discuss and then agree on something to pray about and then pray together in harmony, it is one of the most powerful weapons against the evil one. This is why the enemy is so intent on destrying marriages and keeping husband and wife from praying together.

In this type of prayer we use the "bind" and "loose" command we see in Matt 18:18: "assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. See also Matt 16:19: and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

To get into agreement the following is necessary:

Understand the need clearly and discuss it.

What would be the applicable Bible scripture for the faith foundation, for the prayer you are going to pray?

What are the principles of faith in the situation at hand and how does it operate?

Understand that we can bind and loose things.

Examples of this kind of prayers are found in Luke 13:12-16: where Yeshua (Jesus) said: 12) "Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity, and He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was straight, and glorified God. 16) Whom Satan has bound – think of it – for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath? Read also Mark 7:32-35: 35 immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. Matt 12:29: or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man?

And then he will plunder his house. On the other hand, division or dividedness is a weakness to the kingdom of God, as we read in Matt 12:25: "every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. The Lord seeks unity of faith in and with the word, unity of our hearts to His, unity in the body of Christ, unity in marriage, family ect.

The enemy's job is to divide and conquer. Did you know that racism is a spirit of division? Have you ever heard the saying "United we stand, divided we fall?"

We need to unite as one in Christ and put every form of division in the body of Christ and in our lives aside. Please remember that you can agree to disagree without being divided.

Corporate or group prayer

This type of prayer is where groups of believers are praying, as we can see in the book of Acts. This type of praying is an integral part of the New Testament Church.

As in the case of the prayer of agreement, corporate prayer (meaning the entire group) is clearly very powerful as one can see from various scripture of the entire Bible.

Acts 4:23-31 as well as Acts 1:14, and Acts 12:5-11 we see that the believers were praying in one accord and God answered their prayers. In fact, He more than answered their prayers. When we get to a place of agreeing who God is and who Christ is in and to us, that is when the power of His Spirit flows through our lives.

This type of prayer is where the believer’s prayer involves intense worship of God, setting the scene for His very presence in the midst of the believers.

This type of powerful prayer is purposefully ministering unto the Lord, as priests of our God. (Rev 1:6, 5:10, and 1 Pet 2:9) Worship is ministry unto God. It is the expression of our deepest values and feelings concerning the Lord. It is unselfish and focused on Almighty God. God wants prayers of love towards Him, giving Him honour, worship and respect. God wants fellowship with us.

If we pray this type of prayer and fully yield to God in this way, He will manifest Himself and we became aware of His plans with our lives.

Examples of this kind of prayers are found in Luke 24:52-53: and they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. Act 13:1-4: as they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnababas and Saul for the work which I have called them".

Praying in the Spirit.

This type of prayer is where the believer prays in the Spirit or unknown tongue that God has given him when he was baptised with the Holy Spirit.

Pray first in the Spirit. 99% of the body of Christ today pray the other way round, they pray in the understanding first. If you start in the natural your results are less than when you start in the Spirit.

In Zechariah 4:6: we read, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts". 1 Corintians14:2-15: For he who speaks in a [unknown] tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him [or catches his meaning], however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries [in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secrets truths and hidden things not obvious to the understanding). 14) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15) What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

Visions and revelations come naturally after hours of prayer in the Spirit.

Praying in the name of Yeshua - Jesus.

This type of prayer is where the believer prays in the name of Yeshua (Jesus). It goes hand in hand with petitional, agreement, and corporate praying. Yeshua (Jesus) gave us the right to pray in His Name. He gave us authority through His Name, and we have to walk by faith, and in faith we have the victory.

Examples of this kind of prayers are found in John 16:23-24: and in that day you will ask Me nothing, most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My Name He will give you.

Unanswered prayers should be examined. There could be obvious reasons see 9.1.2. If we act as well as pray according to the guidelines of the Word of God we should have scriptural results.

The petitional prayer.

This prayer is the most popular type of prayer exercised by a vast majority of Christians. It is also used as the primary prayer of faith in most cases. This type of prayer is mostly your own personall prayers to God.

This kind of prayer evolves around the desires of the believer on the basis, "And whatever things in prayer you ask in my name "Yeshua (Jesus)" and believing, you will receive it" (Matt 21:22, Mark 11:23-25). It is the will of God to lovingly provide all the needs of His children.

A nice example of this kind of prayer is found in Matt 7:7-11. "Keep on asking and it will be given, keep on seeking and you will find, keep on knocking and the door will be opened" 11) Says that if you, evil as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven.

In this type of prayer you must not use the term "IF" because it IS the will of God, and therefore we must pray the will of God. You must know the will of God, and that is only obtained by spending time in the Word of God and in prayer. This kind of prayer is not necessarily prayed in a group context. The answering to these prayers is just like prophesies of the Bible – answered prayer was conditioned to obedience of God’s people.

Important prayer habits:

These are some helpful hints in helping you develop your Prayer times with God!

  • You should establish a definite prayer time.
  • You should establish a definite place.
  • Set your alarm, Stand up and go pray.
  • You should talk to God immediately upon rising.
  • You must always come in the name of Yeshua (Jesus). Through His precious blood. Through the veil of His flesh, with thanksgiving and praise into the throne room of God.
  • Take your Bible with you. God will speak to you through His Word.
  • Keep a prayer list and keep it updated.
  • You must pray aloud.
  • Pray in tongues. Tongues let the Holy Spirit fire of God loose onto you, and it equips you with God’s power and it edifies you.
  • Put on the full armour of God. (Ephesians 6)
  • Pray the Word of God, it is life and God will move on His word.
  • You must also be quiet for a time so you can listen to God’s voice. He will speak to you!

There are only three voices that speak to us namely:

  • God’s voice
  • Our own voice
  • Satan’s voice

There are only three answers:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Wait

You must listen, and learn to know God’s voice. (God’s voice is soft, always building up and encouraging and it is in His Word the Bible). After I have improved my time with the Lord in prayer, I am growing.

I had to learn to do the hardest thing in my Christian life, and that is to do nothing out of myself. I had to learn to be still and to let God be God in me.

How to pray!

Louis, thank you for having an open and humble heart. I do agree that prayer is vital to the growth and development of a Christian. It is a direct communication to God the Father through our intercessor Christ Jesus. I cannot imagine a day without being given in prayer.

Your revision will spark interest and someone will wish to know more about your subject. I did read the Hub and like how you describe different types of prayer. So many simply don't know these things. Now they are being welcomed in love and that is a direct reflection of our Lord's commandment and His character.

Again, thank you. Joy in Jesus, Hyphenbird.

Dearest Hyphenbird, Thank you so much for your input and you are right. These words are harshly put and my only reason is to make it as clear as possible what the importance of prayer is to a believer. After seeing it from you perspective, I humbly apologise and will revise that statement, as my aim is not to offend, but to enlighten, Thank you for having the courage to speak so openly, because it is only with this kind of honest response that we can improve and become more sensitive to others, Much love, Louis

Oh louisxfourie. That opening statement is so unloving and harsh. Surely you realize that new believers must learn the art of prayer. I strongly disagree with what you said. I can see an unbeliever or a new Christian turning away because that made them feel attacked. And many people will not want to read your Hub after being slapped with those words. I must tell you that I am one of those people. We are to spread the good news of the Kingdom. Calling someone a liar is not going to accomplish that or to reach their heart. Colossians 4:6 says: "Let your utterance be always with graciousness, seasoned with salt, so as to know how you ought to give an answer to each one."

I say all of this in concern and care. Joy in Jesus, Hyphenbird.
