DoomsdayPreppers and Prophecies

Updated on November 21, 2015

Doomsday Prophets

It seems, throughout history there have been doomsday prophets sounding the message the world was about to end. A long time ago, the entire world was anticipating doomsday in A.D. 1000. However as the clock changed over from A.D. 999 into another century nothing happened.

As the year 2000 neared the world panicked believing hype about a "millennium bug," perhaps better known as Y2K, fearing it would end civilization as we know it.

Then information about the ancient Mayan calendar was released allegedly prophesying the end of the world on December 21, 2012. But life as we know it continued on. Certain religions and survivalist groups have been foretelling the end of the world since time immemorial. So why should we take these views seriously?

There has been much media since 2012 capitalizing on public fear of such an event. In that year the popular magazine National Geographic began a series called Doomsday Preppers. Soon after, the Discovery Channel began another series called Doomsday Bunkers. Both shows gave information about people who were preparing themselves and their families for "the end." These television shows focused on people who built survival shelters, learning from various sources how to build survival shelters and living off the land, so to speak.

Now, these types of shows are beamed into millions of households. One big question is, how should Christians view these messages? After all, the views are far from being anything new.

Some cults, religions, and segments of society have always prepared for this kind of calamity. Can anyone remember, or heard, about the fears abounding during the 1950's? Many families were scrambling to build bomb shelters in their backyards. During that time many were stockpiling food, water, and firearms.

Even today, there are many groups and religions truly believing we are living in the "last days." The list of believers today has grown significantly larger. People fear destruction of their land, economic collapse, civil violence and whatnot, not to mention natural disasters. There are literally millions quietly preparing for doomsday, by turning spare rooms into food storage facilities, cultivating gardens, preparing their homes for alternative sources of energy, and stocking up on survival supplies.

So why are so many concerned? Obviously there are many who feel we are heading for hard times. So why not prepare for them? But be forewarned, preparing for such an ordeal is not cheap. One study showcased one doomsday prepper that spent over $350,000 preparing for such a scenario.

However, it's not necessary to spend that much money. If you are one of those believing the end is near, there are certain things you can do. Focus on these six categories.

  1. Food

  2. Shelter

  3. Water

  4. Energy

  5. Defense

  6. Fuel for cooking

  7. First aid supplies and personal medications

These are things anyone can do on a budget.

One can hardly talk about any doomsday prophecies without mentioning what the Bible has to say about it. The bible gives many insights into a possible doomsday which is supposed to occur after rapture and judgment, many contained in the book of Revelation.

Rev 16:8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

Rev 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Rev 16:10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

Rev 16:11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

Rev 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. Revelations 16:8-11, 17-18.

We also see in the Old Testament Isaiah describing the events of Tribulation. Isaiah 13: 9-13.

Ida 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD comet, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

Ida 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Isa 13:12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

Isa 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

Preparation for hard times is essential. Not only should we prepare physically, but also spiritually. If you believe anything about bible prophecy then you know hard times are ahead. Jesus warned us there will be famines, plagues, wars and pestilence. He also said no one knows the day or the hour of his return.

Jesus tells us to prepare for his second coming and signs to watch for. Many believe God supplies all of our needs. However, it may also be true God is giving us advance warnings allowing us time to do take measures.
