First Rest, Symbolical of Future Rest

Updated on December 4, 2019

Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more

To remove all ambiguities about the creations, the created and the creature which God knew would indubitably spring up in the future, because he knows the end from the beginning, he called Prophet Moses apart when the children of Israel were on their journey to the promised land, Canaan land, and revealed to him all that transpired at the inception of the world.

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isa 46:10 (Emphasis Mine))

God did this because he does not want to leave any stone un-turned while talking to Prophet Moses about his clan and descendants, Yahweh makes it step-upon-steps, line-upon-lines, precepts upon precepts unto his wonderful and dedicated servant.

“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” (Isa 28:10)

“He (Yahweh) showed himself as a wonderful historian, for he knows that for anyone to understand life and developments of things in the world, for anyone to have deeper insights into one’s clan, lineage, culture, leaderships, one would need a very good history of the past marrying those histories with the present and extrapolating them to the future to know what would or cannot but happen in the future.”

I want to believe that God also used some styles of the Mathematicians and other scientists to talk to Prophet Moses during those days. How do I mean? What I mean is he took Prophet Moses from the known backwards, then brought him back to the present (the position they (Israelites) were at that point) and shooting him forward to what would happen in the nearest future.

Therefore, we found in some of the documentations of Prophet Moses that he would talk about the past then the present and would talk about the future to the people. For clarifications shall we see some of the examples in his write up.

In Deuteronomy chapter 17 as we would see beneath, we shall see that God was shooting his servant forward, he was talking about what would happen in the future to the man of God, that a time would come when the people would desire for King like other nations, and he thence through his servant told them what the characteristics of Kings and other leaders of the nations are, but their leaders shouldn’t act like those worldly leaders.

“When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

“Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.

“But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.

“Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.” (Deu 17:14-17)

And all bible students would recall that the children of Israel started asking for King during the days of Prophet Samuel which the Lord grants them.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” (1 Sa 8:4-5)

In Deuteronomy chapter 18 again God was talking to them about raising a Prophet likened unto Prophet Moses, and he asks that they should obey that prophet when he comes.

“The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;” (Deu 18:15)

The Apostle Peter after the miraculous healing that Jesus through him and Apostle John wrought on the body of the lame man at the beautiful gate while referring to this that Prophet Moses wrote millennia back in the book of Deuteronomy says the place was talking about Jesus. Jesus Christ is the Prophet which God told them through the prophet that they should believe when he arrives for who fails to believe the prophet would not get to God’s kingdom, such a one would be damned and destroyed.

For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.

Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, and in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. (Act 3:22-26)

These are few examples of where Yahweh points to the future for the man while talking with him however, we shall see that in the given of the ten laws (Exo 20), those laws and rules that the children of Israel were asked to follow were interwoven with the pasts, presents and the future.

It is via this that Yahweh told Prophet Moses how he created the universe and everything in there, which he expects and asks him to put down for all to be able to read to remove obscurities that people may be thinking about of the creation of the world in the future.

1. The Working Days

The wonderful account in Genesis chapter one, shows the working days of God while forming the world and the working days were six days. It was during those days that he created everything in the world the seen and the unseen things in the world.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Col 1:16-17)

God test runs everything he created
God test runs everything he created

2. God Test-Runs Everything He Created

During those days, it was stated that Elohim after creating those things he created on specific days would watch it closely to see if it is function as he wills or not. This I call test-running, because when scientists or technologists make anything they would test-run it before launching such things out to the public for use. God also ensures that he watches those created things to make sure that for the purpose for which those things have been created they are serving the purpose. He does not create anything and just go to sleep under the auspices that it would not have fault, no, that was not what he did. What he did was watching those things clearly before ascertaining or certifying them fit for the purpose for which they have been formed.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Gen 1:2-5)

This should be our attitude, when executing a job for someone; we should ensure that we watch it closely before certifying it fit for the populace’s use. I said this because we have heard of some pharmaceutical companies who will produce some drugs but would not work well on those drugs before selling them, and it is after months of use that the people who are using those drugs are showing symptoms that the people would trace those side effects back to those drugs. Another is the case of some locally made androids phones that have resulted in the deaths of some people because the manufacturing companies fail to test-run those before offering them for public use. These are not good. That was not what God did when creating the world and everything in there, he ensures that he test-runs everything, making sure that they are in order before approving them and moving to the next thing he wants to create.

Think about this for a second, assuming as you are now, and all the trees in the town or city you are living in suddenly bends and obstructed the road how would you feel? Or assuming some of the stars in the firmament suddenly falls; don’t you think the larger part of the earth would be destroyed?

All these could not happen because God ensures that he test-runs everything after creation to make sure that they are in the order for which he wants them to be before certifying them “good”.

And God saw the light, that it was good…(Gen 1:4)

and God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:10)

“… and God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:12)

“… and God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:18)

“… and God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:21)

“… and God saw that it was good. (Gen 1:25)

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (Gen 1:31)

God test-runs everything he created on each of the days and affirmed that they were very good as we could find in the above verses.

3. The Day of Rest

We know from the biblical account as found in Genesis 2 that after serious work during the night and the day by God, he rested on the seventh day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Gen 2:1-3)

God rested on the seventh day
God rested on the seventh day

4. He Blessed And Sanctified The Day

The Hebrew word for blessed here is “בּרך”, which becomes bârak when Romanized and could be pronounced as baw-rak'. This word means to extol. And the word for sanctify in Hebrew is “קדשׁ”, the Romanized form is qâdash (phonetic spelling is kaw-dash') this word implies to pronounce or observe as clean, wholly.

He extolled and pronounced this seventh day clean and complete because

(a) He does not work during this day. The previous days he has been exerting force through some distances which is the definition the physicists give to work. But on this day, he does not exert any known force through some distances, he was at ease in his heavenly Palace, enjoying and probably listening to the angels render some beautiful songs to him, as prophet Isaiah says in his account when his eyes were opened to see what was happening in the heavenly places.

And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. (Isa 6:3)

Apostle John at the Isle of Patmos while receiving revelations about some past incidents also says that the angels, cherubim and seraphim and other hosts of heaven worships God and the crucified Lamb day and night.

And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Rev 4:8-11)

(b) A writer defines sanctified as being set aside, being set apart, this means, he sets the day apart from all other days; as a day to always look forward to, because it is a day of revelry.

(c) He sets the day apart, pronouncing the day wholly, complete because he successfully came to the end of the work which he starts doing. He completes the work, the works he started were not abandoned, nothing hinders him from completing his works, fulfilling his heart desires.

(d) It is a blessed day because an end has come to deliberations on creation. It is a day he does not need to deliberate with the host of heaven on what to do or what not to do about creation again,

(e) He has successfully put an end to darkness’ reign on the face of the deep. Devil and darkness may have been thinking that they have overtaken the Lord and that there was nothing he could do again, but after he completes everything, the devil knows that he has failed because darkness has been eliminated with light enthroned.

(f) The emptiness and the void that pervade the earth could not rear up their ugly heads again. Having created different things in the world and enthroning man to be governing everything that he has created, God was relieved and could pronounce the day pure, clean and consecrated.

(g) He looks around and find light surrounding him. It is a day that he wakes up, looks around and saw light all around him unlike before that darkness was all over the place, he could beam with smiles, it is a day he does not have heavy burden on his heart as to what to do with pervading darkness.

(h) The hovering Holy Spirit has resting place: It is a day that the Holy Spirit that abinitio has no resting place has a place to rest, the Holy Spirit’s operation could be seen unlike before that his work couldn’t be seen.

Work Resumes after the resting day

5. Work Resumed

After the expiration of the seventh day, the cycle of the days of the week was completed and another week was opened. The beginning of the new week would be the time when Adam was commissioned, Adam started his operation and God was visiting him to know what he was doing.

Things continued smoothly like this, until God started noticing lacuna in the life of Adam and the lacuna, he discovered that he cannot fill.

And the LORD God said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (Gen 2:18)

This made the Lord to go back to the drawing board with his entourage and the resolution was that they should make someone like Adam.

And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Gen 1:26)

This was made happen when Yahweh makes Adam to fall into deep sleep and he took one of his ribs to form a woman.

And Adam said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. (Gen 2:23)

After forming the woman, he brought her unto the man, because he wants the man to have a companion, he does not want the man to be alone again.

The duration was unknown, that's why we are hearing that the world is about 4.2 billion years in existence
The duration was unknown, that's why we are hearing that the world is about 4.2 billion years in existence

6. Duration Unknown

The length of time for which the man and the woman have been living successfully together, doing the work which the Lord has commanded them to be doing was not stated in the bible, but it was sure that they would have lived for weeks with God being visitors to them.

I said they would have lived for weeks because it was both the woman and the man that knew that God was walking in the midst of the garden after their fall.

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. (Gen 3:8 (Emphasis mine))

This wouldn’t have been assuming they have lived for few days together (humanly speaking), for it would take time before one knows the characteristics of a partner, a close friend. One cannot wake overnight and know the characteristics of a closer friend.

Having been together for weeks, perhaps months or years depending on how the heavenly beings’ measurement of times and days and seasons those days they have been familiar with their one and only friend, who is God, they had known how he used to walk, what used to herald his movements in the garden. It was the sound of his footsteps that they heard not that they had seen him.

It is imperative of you and I to know how God moves. Though God cannot be limited, he cannot be predicted, but sometimes, there are some things that are salient and constant about God. Though the heavens and earth would pass away, some of the things about God would remain as they are.

“Take as instance, as from the time immemorial, God has been in the business of salvation, this cannot change about him. Devil cannot save a person, if the devil promises to save anyone it is certain that he is lying, because he is the father of all lies.”

I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. (Isa. 43)

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luk 2:11)

Savior in Hebrew is “ישׁע”, Romanized form is yâsha‛(pronounced as yaw-shah') and in Greek it is “σωτήρ”, Romanized form is sōtēr (pronounced as so-tare') which means deliverer, rescuer, defender.

Another is God has always been in the business of healing. This is his nature, he does not want anyone to be sick for he knows sickness is of the devil and he is always and would always antagonize sicknesses and infirmities.

See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. (Deu 32:39)

And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. (Exo 15:26)

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.” (Psa 103:3)

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. (Psa 147:3)

The Hebrew word for heal is “רפה רפא”, Romanized as râphâ' râphâh (Pronounced as raw-faw', raw-faw') which means cure, repair, make whole.

It is the business of God to make whole, repair internally and externally, heal physically, psychologically and socially. He has been in this business since time immemorial and he won’t leave doing it for mankind. Thus, when his move to heal begins, those who have been familiar with him in this respect will know that he has started, but those who are naïve to his kind of movement would be laughing those people to scorn because the ways of God are foolishness to them.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Co 2:14)

God is a holy one, sin cannot be found in his dwelling place. His work and walk are holy. When he is walking it will take those who are pure in mind and spirit to discern that this is his act and style of working and walking.

When we see people, who are walking in holiness, who are striving to live a life that is worthy of the gospel we do not need anyone to tell us that such a being is in relationship with God.

Adam and Eve because they have been living in the garden for a while, years, decades, centuries, millennia perhaps have known the characteristic movements of their friend, father and creator, Yahweh. Thus, when his footsteps were heard in the garden, they knew he was around and hid themselves.

Onion in orange is unexpected finding. The unexpected happened in the garden that led to man and woman ouster
Onion in orange is unexpected finding. The unexpected happened in the garden that led to man and woman ouster

7. Unexpected Happened

Adam and Eve continued to work, naming the animals and other things, overseeing everything in the garden as the Lord has commanded, dressing and keeping the garden with his wife, suitable mirror, being a good companion to him.

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Gen 2:15)

Having been satisfying to letters what the Lord asked them to be doing, the enemy arrived as it made darkness to fill the face of the deep abinitio with the spirit of God hovering around with no place to rest.

When this enemy arrived, he subtly entered the woman, extracting from her what she knows and understands about what the Lord told them, what she knows of the garden. The woman couldn’t decipher the devil’s antics she thus fell into the serpent’s trap and sinned against the Lord together with her husband, Adam.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. (Gen 3:1-6)

The bible says “… for we are not ignorant of his (devil’s) devices.(2 Co 2:11b). A person who will not be ignorant of the devices of the devil would be the person who will be receptive to God, a person who will allow Holy Ghost’s directives always.

As believers who have been redeemed by incorruptible thing, the blood of the Lamb, as apostle Peter says, forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:(1 Pet. 1:18-19)

We are in the strongest possible terms encouraged to have Holy Spirit in us, for Jesus said he would teach us all things, through this wonderful Spirit we shall be able to know the antics and tactics of the devil always.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (John 16:7-14)

Men fell unto the deception of the devil and they pierced the mind of God with a strong dagger.

The last Adam and the first Adam
The last Adam and the first Adam

8. The New Adam

After the fall, God judged the first man and woman and the serpent. He afterwards sends them out of the garden of Eden. Since this time God has been working again, although the kind of work he was doing now is not like the work he did when creating the heavens and the earth and all there in.

Because he cannot withstand iniquities, which have overwhelmed the minds of men after the fall, he had to destroy the first world. After this destruction he was sorry and covenanted with men that he would not destroy the world with flood again.

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Gen 6:5)

He however, made an example of what would happen in the future when he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire.

His desire to have a nation for himself was showing the world how he wants us to be living in the world, but despite these, people still could not fathom his ways and we continued in sin which thence forced him to do the unthinkable, coming to the world to save mankind by himself.

His coming to the world as the last Adam standing was designed to put an end to the sin that has pervaded the surface of the earth. This marks the sixth day of another work according to his calculation and timing.

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.(1 Co 15:45)

He successfully completed the work of redemption on the cross of Calvary and promises that another seventh day is nigh the corner, the promised seventh day, he said would happen when he comes back with the saints to the world.

Future rest, will you be a part?
Future rest, will you be a part?

9. The Future Rest

Rest in Greek is “καταπαύω”, if Romanized it is katapauō (pronounced as kat-ap-ow'-o) which means to settle down.

When he, the second Adam, who is Jesus Christ was in the flesh he told his followers and by extension those of us who believed in him, as he said “… blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed,” (Joh 20:29) that there is another rest for us.

For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.(Heb. 4:4, 8-11)

“Jesus Christ promised that we shall settle down with him in his father’s place, and there we shall cease from all forms of works, there we shall be rejoicing with him”

Because the devil our archenemy would have been imprisoned, put in everlasting bondage and wouldn’t be able to come to our territory again would not be able to come to where we are with him.

This settling down with him has been in his mind since the foundation of the world began because he “declares the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isa 46:10). For this future rest, God was always visiting the first man and woman in the garden of Eden because he wants to lay solid foundation for their friendship and communication but when the devil attacked he had to work out another modality to ensure that his will and counsel for man stands and what he comes up with was sending his son into the world to bridge the gap, to create the needful relationship between man and him. After this has been solidified, he thence has since been looking forward to the time that he would have rest with mankind again as he used to do in the time past with our father and mother, though not documented in the bible.

However, all points to this because all that Jesus did on earth he done to secure this rest place for us, he did all he did to ensure that nothing takes away the day of rest neither changes the day of rest from us.

Do all you can to be there
Do all you can to be there

10. The Counsel

The author of the epistle of Hebrew says, let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.(Heb. 4:11).

Having known the Lord and seen that the devil like a roaring lion now does not wish anyone to secure the rest, the author of this book cannot but counsel everyone of what they need to do to secure the place, to be enlisted among those who will enter the place of rest with the saints of old. His counsel is enmeshed in the word, labor to guide and guard ourselves from all forms of unbelief that could truncate this mission and ambition as it has done for some in the past.

We need to “make effort” which is the Greek meaning of the word labor (σπουδάζω, spoo-dad'-zo) in this verse to settle down with him in the heavenly places when he returns with the angels of heaven.

All forms of unbelief should be erased from our hearts, we shouldn’t allow it to dwell in our lives, we shouldn’t give room to it, not for a second in us to be able to enter the place of rest promised the saints and there we shall ever be with the Lord.
