How Do I Pray?

Updated on June 26, 2013

Dearest Maggie:

What is the best way to pray? Will God hear me if I don’t do it just right?

Dearest Unsure:

First, let me assure you that there is no right or wrong way to pray. And, yes God will hear you even if you don’t do it “just right.”

I can only tell you how I pray … I simply talk to the Lord. You see, He isn’t some unreachable deity that doesn’t care about me. He cares very much and when I come to Him … He answers me.

I will tell you that there are different types of prayers. The most common is the prayer of salvation and probably the most important of all. It is this prayer that begins your relationship with the Lord and opens the door for your other prayers to be answered. The prayer of salvation brings you into the Kingdom as a child of God and gives you the promise of eternal life. So, if I were you I would start with this prayer first.

God said that if you will receive His Son, Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior then you shall be saved and be given the gift of eternal life. In order to do this, you must believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He came to the earth in the flesh, that He died for your sins, that He rose again and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. When you receive Jesus … it’s as simple as recognizing that you are a sinner, acknowledging that you need a savior, receiving Him as Lord because you need someone to help you live out life in this world in which we are living, asking Him into your heart …and meaning it. No one will know if you mean it but you. If you want to do that, just say this simple prayer.

Lord, I know that I am a sinner and I need a savior. I am asking you to come and live in my heart. Be Lord of my life, teach me your ways and reveal to me who you are. Thank you for the sacrifice that you made so that I can be forgiven. Thank you for the gift of eternal life. In Jesus’ Holy Name! Amen!

Now, you are a child of the Most High God. Welcome to the Kingdom!

Now, let’s teach you a little bit about asking God. When I go before Abba (which means Father God) I go with praise in my heart and on my lips. I praise Him for my day before it even really begins. I thank Him for waking me up and for the beauty of the day. The scripture says to enter His presence with praise and thanksgiving. Honoring Him for who He is … so I praise Him for my salvation because no one comes to the Father lest He draws them. I praise Him for my job because so many people are unemployed. I praise Him for the gift of my daughter because without Him there would be no her. So, I always recommend that you start your prayer with praise for Him. Thank Him for what He has done, what He is doing and what you are expecting Him to do.

Second, I remind Him of His Word which says that the fervent prayers of a righteous man avails much and that I am righteous not because of what I do but because of who I belong to … Him. I remind Him that He said to bring my petitions to Him and that He would answer me. I remind Him that He said to remind Him of His promises which are in the Word. I pray His Word back to Him.

Third, I talk to Him about what is on my heart. And if I have a request I make it known to Him. I pray about anything and everything that is on my heart and mind. It encompasses so much that I can’t begin to cover it all … but I will give you an example of one my prayers below.

Fourth, I thank Him for not only hearing me but for answering me. I tell Him that I believe that I receive that which I have prayed. I praise Him for His will being done. I thank Him because I know that no matter what He is moving on my behalf. He said that He would never forsake me or leave me. He said that He would turn even the worse circumstances around for His Glory.

Lastly, I tell Him that no matter what I will love and serve Him all the days of my life. I acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior. I honor Him as God and I tell Him that I am glad that He is God and not a man that He should lie but that His Word is true and does not return void.

Here is an example of how I pray.

Great is Your Faithfulness! Awesome are Your Ways! Thank You for Your Unfailing, Everlasting, Unconditional Love! I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I praise you for waking me up this morning and for health in my body. Thank You, Lord that I can come before Your Throne of Grace and know that not only do you hear but you answer me.

Lord, you word says that you draw all men to you. You said we have not because we ask not and that when we ask we ask amiss. I am asking according to what I know is in Your Word. You desire that none perish and that all would come to you in salvation.

I am asking that you draw “Unsure” (and anyone else that may read this writing) to you for no one comes unless you first draw them. I pray that you would reveal to them who you are and teach them your ways. You love them more than they will ever know and you care about the hidden things of their heart.

Lord, I know that you knew my heart’s cry before I uttered a word and that you have answered. Thank you for the salvation of “Unsure.” Thank you that they stand in awe of who you are and that you care enough to have someone pray on HubPages just for them. You alone are worthy and you alone are God.

I give you Glory, Abba! I believe that I receive that which I have prayed. I will love and serve you all the days of my life. I praise you that Your Word is true and that it doesn’t return void but goes forth and accomplishes that for which it is sent. Thank you, Abba!

In Jesus’ Holy Name! Amen!

Well, there you have it.

May “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” [Numbers 6:24-26

In His Service!

Beautifully said! Simply talk to Father God as though it were your dad you are talking with telling Him what is on your mind.

Another nice one! I think sometimes people worry too much about praying "the right way" when there is no right or wrong way. I, like you, simply talk to Him. I'm so thankful that I don't have to go through ritualistic measures to feel like I can connect with my God. Like the old song says, "Just a little talk with Jesus..." ;)

Thank you for your comments. We must trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, acknowledge Him in all our ways and He will direct our paths. Blessings to you!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. May I add something. God will always hear your prayers as well as the enemy. Now the enemy does not care about your prayers, they are just words to him, but what the enemy is concerned with you recieving what you are praying for.

The enemy will do anything, and everything to stop you from recieving your request to God. How, well he put doubt in your mind. He will try to decieve by trying to mix worldy things with God word. He will try to discourage with the past mistakes you made before you was saved. He will try to tell you that your are not worthy and God's words are not absolute. How do I know this, he did it to Eve, Job,me and he even tried it on Jesus.

Unsure, these are some of the schemes and antics of the enemy, but let me tell you this. TRUST IN HIM, GOD WILL NEVER LIE. HIS PROMISE ARE TRUE AND TRUE. So watch out for the naysayers, the haters, and doubters and people who tell you everything but God's words. KEEP THE FAITH for we walk by faith and not by sight. THEREFORE NO MATTER HOW ROUGH THE SEAS BECOME or HOW DARK THE ROOM BECOMES, BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST, THE LIGHT THAT IS JESUS CHRIST.

The enemy will do everything to keep your from your prayers. Because when your prayers are answered God get the glory, and your life becomes a testimony to the power of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. The enemy do not want God to get the glory because your victory and His glory will bring others to Jesus.
