How to Interpret a Dream from God

Updated on March 14, 2013

Scriptural Dream Interpretation

How to Interpret Dreams from God.

I have been interpreting dreams and visions from God for about 40 years. I have studied the scriptures about it for years and it is very simple. There are a lot of people that think they can interpret dreams. Most of them can not. Here are the scriptural guidelines for interpreting .

Beware of those who interpret dreams from a formula. A book of meanings, There is NO formula for dream interpretation. Scripture says dreams come from one of two places. From God or from much activity. in other words from things you are thinking about. Satan cannot give you a dream. If it is from you there is no interpretation.

Dreams are not a game, if God gives you a dream there is a reason and you need to have the correct interpretation.

If it is from God the interpretation is only available from the Holy Spirit. Scripture says that God has the interpretation for dreams.

Gen 40:8 And they said to him, "We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it."So Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."

The only information that should be given is all information from within the dream including as much detail as you can remember. Sometimes the smallest details are very important. Other times God may give the interpretation and the dream before the person interpreting the dream even hears the dream. God will do it His way and we must just let Him do it His way.

Many times I have had an interpretation that did not seem to fit the dream and have had to ask the person if there were any details left out . When they said yes I forgot this. This little missing piece was all that was needed and now my answer to them fit the dream fully and I was able to give it to them.. Other times I have asked the Lord ,is this all of it and He said yes, give it. And they understood it even though I did not. The person interpreting does not need to understand they just have to be sure the answer is coming from The Holy Spirit of God.

DO NOT give any information about yourself , your beliefs, how you felt at the time, etc. If the person asks for any information other than from the dream itself, they do not understand interpreting a dream from God . Do not trust them for an answer. The only exception would be if they ask if you have the interpretation of the dream. If you do they should either confirm or deny your interpretation-- nothing else, if they want to discuss it DO NOT. They will mislead you.

A warning if you are interpreting dreams. You are dealing with a person's life here, it may be life or death for them. You must be sure the person understands “ do not take my word for this until you are sure the Holy Spirit is confirming it to you.” . And my personal belief is if you are not willing to stake you life on the interpretation then—DO NOT GIVE IT.

A warning to the person with the dream-- There is only ONE interpretation. So if you are getting aswers from many people and they are different you will be confused and may miss the real meaning that is why you must have confirmation from the Holy Spirit that you have THE answer. Usually He will quicken it to you when you hear THE interpretation.

The person interpreting the dream may not have an answer for you for a while. Sometimes this is a timing issue with God and others for different reasons.

You also need to understand that God also gives nightmares. Oh I know some of you are saying oh yeah,!! but here is scripture to confirm it.

Job 7:13 13 When I say, 'My bed will comfort me, My couch will ease my complaint,' 14 Then You scare me with dreams And terrify me with visions, 15 So that my soul chooses strangling And death rather than my body.

This was during Job's time of trouble and he is talking to the Lord.. Check the context , it is truth.

If someone gives you a dream interpretation that was obtained any way other than from the Holy Spirit it IS NOT THE INTERPRETATION. If they say "I think" or "I believe" then it probably is not the interpretation. God speaks to people in dreams in a manner they understand. It does not have to make sense to the interpreter, he is only a messenger. what means something to me may mean the exact opposite to you and if God is speaking to me the same information will have a different meaning than if He was speaking to you..

Unfortunately many churches teach "dream interpretation with their list of meanings.. This is an unGodly, and dangerous teaching and must be exposed for what it is. I have seen too many people hurt by false .interpretations.

Sometimes the interpretation is available right away and other times it can be years before it is available. I have even seen someone speak something not knowing what they were doing but the person with the dream said "thank you God now I understand." it was the interpretation to a dream that person had asked God to interpret. We have to understand scripture and how it applies to our own lives.

Also remember, the dream may not be fulfilled for years. I have seen dreams that were not fulfilled for over 20 years. But when that situation presented it self the person remembered the dream and knew what to do.

One other caution, God will use who HE will to give THE interpretation...

One of the most important things I ever heard from God was delivered to me by a person I did not like and did not trust. When he came and said I have a word for you from God, I was skeptical and expected it to be something he had made up, but as soon as I said” then tell me” he started to speak and God said “LISTEN CLOSELY” and I was glad I did.

You must be willing to hear God His way if you want THE interpretation.. Remember Balaam's life was saved because he listened to a donkey.

Please understand this is not a game to a Christian, this is important. Never believe anything anyone, including me tells you until you have confirmed it is scriptural truth, by the scriptures and the Holy Spirit. It could cost you your life if you are wrong.

God bless you as you follow Him.

celefoe, I've not given much thought to interpretation and dreams. The times God has spoken to me have been gently and into my spirit with words. One time as a teen and new believer I was sitting in Church studying the cross, longing to serve Jesus yet feeling ignorant - Jesus spoke to me and said .. not really audibly but as certain as it was audible ... I want to prepare you for ministry and I want you to go to Bible college. I was shocked as I had no such plan. Yes my Pastor had taught us that the Holy Spirit speaks in a still small voice and if we do not listen .. we may miss His plan for our life. I listened, obeyed, met my husband and serve Him in ministry.

I am drawn by the humility in which you write this and your urgent wanting to "NOT believe anything anyone, including me tells you until you have confirmed it is scriptural truth, by the scriptures and the Holy Spirit. It could cost you your life if you are wrong."

God bless you brother celefoe as you glorify Him with your life.

Wow, This is a great article and i needed to read it as I am now trying to figure out some dreams I have had that are very spiritual in nature. And some I think are prophetic.

Oh no I dont talk to them, however they are send my God, he has send them to intervene trust me it saved my life, if you read my angel story.

I know they are send by God, I know not to worship them. The scriptures say God will come thundering with his army. What they have said was very little sentences and nothing that had to do with evil.

The one thing they said to me was my friend was going to Hamilton and it was for a reason she was waiting on. So we knew that her reason was coming and it did.

I only deal with them through God and they have left me many messages. God knows me he knows. I know just what you mean, however Angels are messengers of God. When I say or thank them for being around me, I always say through God or thank you God for sending your angels always. I know this.

However my Angel story is true and if it wasnt for God sending his Angels I would of never survived my accident. The Angels come when needed to guard us but through God.

Thank you for your insight I do appreciate any comment.

God leaves me many messages and if he knew that was wrong he would let me know, because I ask him.

The voice was an Angel from God there is no way it was evil, as it turned out to be a good thing, both times.

When I say close to the angelic world, I mean the unknown, the Holy Ghost, God and who he sends me. Its all been good. He has led me to Angels pages when I ask about them.

    Thanks again

    Hi Laurie,

I need to talk to you about the angel thing. There is not one scripture telling us to talk to angels. I believe in angels, I have never seen an angel that I can recall, but have friends that have seen them , always in a time of danger. One was stopped by a state trooper on the way to visit his father for thanksgiving in Iowa , He made him get out of the car and walk around it for a while because he was falling asleep and there was a very dangerous section of highway ahead.

He was convinced this saved his family. His father is a trooper and said there is no trooper uniform or color of car that matches the one that stopped him in any state around there. I know this man well and he and his wife both agreed it was an angel. I have no trouble with this type of exchange. I have heard many similar accounts.

Every time I have ever had to minister to someone talking to angels, it has not been of God and when it was stopped , ALL confusion left. It is very common in catholicism but is not a Christian concept.

The reason you have trouble with hearing God is related tc your angelic relationship.

There is no reason or scripture that says to talk to angels, we are to Talk to the Lord alone. He is the only one that scripture tells us to talk to. Please do not misunderstand or take this wrong I am using this because it is the only scripture that actually talks of talking to angels. I am not accusing you of anything in it. But using it to show what happens when talking to angels.

Col 2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.

The part I want you to see is "not holding fast to the head" in other words looking to something (angels) rather than Jesus for amswers.

1 Tim 2:5 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,

If you repent of talking to angels and talk only to God you will be rid of the confusion.

    your brother in Jesus

    Wow what an amazing story.

I have been asking God to talk to me audibly for a while now and really want him to.

I did hear Angels talk to me, I know it wasnt God because it was a very nice angelic female voice.

I wish he would talk to me, he knows I am a very confused girl at times and have to ask him to keep confirming things, mind you he does, over and over however it would be so nice to hear him.

I am close to the angelic world and need some answers now but he hasnt yet. Sometimes I get upset at him for not talking to me.

However before I do something I do ask him what the situation is and sooner or later he answers me. He is taking care of a situation in my life as we speak.

Any ideas for having him speak to me by chance, aside of asking him to do so.

    thank you

That is how I hear from Him. I have had 3 dreams from God and 3 or 4 visions in my life so far. He speaks to me as if talking to another man. No parables. I can tell you stories of places God has led me to and protected me in around the world. If he had not told me and I was sure it was Him, and protected me as I did what He called me to do, I would not have survived.

I have actually had Him speak audibly to me on several occasions. The first time, there was a family emergency and I was asking God to take care of it. It was at the point I had to hear from God because something had to be done now. (so I thought) I went to work the next morning and as I sat at my desk looking at the ceiling praying fervently, I felt the presence of the Lord then I heard as if He was sitting in front of me, "dont worry Charlie everything will be ok." I relaxed, let go and over a period of time it all worked out.

Once my youngest daughter got sick and after very many prayers and drs tests, while I was asking God I was losing my patience because my wife believed the drs who were saying it was MD. God had assured me it was not and they were all mad at me because I would not believe it. I was out in the field beside my home and was praying asking for God to either heal her or give me the disease and make her well.

He spoke to me audibly and said " she has tick fever", we lived in Missouri where it is fairly common , yet none of the 3-4 drs had tested her for it. I called the dr and said my wife is bringing my daughter in this morning and I want you to test her for tick fever, he laughed and said it is the problem. I got angry and said i dont care what you think, God has told me that is what is wrong with her, so test her or I will find someone that will. To make a long story short they tested and were amazed that was her problem. they started treatment but God healed her in 3-4 days.

That is why I am so passionate about the scriptures because My God is awesome and it is fun seeing Him at work as you follow Him.

    Thank you for this.

Oh I know, He gives me dreams all the time, mind you I have to ask him at times to lead me to what it means and he usually does.

In codes of course, you know God, he speaks in parables. However I did ask him a question and he led me to the answer and under a picture he put "yes they are' the exact answer I wanted to hear.

    Thank you for your response.

Have you ever heard his voice?

    My dear sister Larie,

As far as the Job scripture, I never gave it much thought. I would say that I believe that in those nightmares if we had them, we would see that they were warnings from God about what was going on, but because he was under such stress and had fallen into the trap of feeling sorry for himself that he did not see it. It just looked like more attack. Whatever it was it did not drive him from, but closer to God. Because his heart was right as far as wanting to have his relationship with God to be correct at any cost. Also it shows us that nightmares also come from God, which we need to understand.

So do not worry about it i do net see it to be abnormal. Remember God looks at the heart, thats the most important thing , keep your heart open to Him and He will take care of you.

    HI great hub

As I said in your mail, I agree with you. I know Satan cannot give you dreams, I am kind of shocked about the part of God giving us nightmares.

However, this scripture I know is true with Job. But did God not give him the nightmare as a form of punishment actually. Maybe one can say a wake up call for the evil doers.

God always leads me to the answers to my dreams, because sometimes I am so c0nfused. Although the way my dreams go, I wonder if sometimes it is our own dreams and not through God.

    Great Hub
