How to Interpret a Dream from God

Updated on March 14, 2013

Scriptural Dream Interpretation

How to Interpret Dreams from God.

I have been interpreting dreams and visions from God for about 40 years. I have studied the scriptures about it for years and it is very simple. There are a lot of people that think they can interpret dreams. Most of them can not. Here are the scriptural guidelines for interpreting .

Beware of those who interpret dreams from a formula. A book of meanings, There is NO formula for dream interpretation. Scripture says dreams come from one of two places. From God or from much activity. in other words from things you are thinking about. Satan cannot give you a dream. If it is from you there is no interpretation.

Dreams are not a game, if God gives you a dream there is a reason and you need to have the correct interpretation.

If it is from God the interpretation is only available from the Holy Spirit. Scripture says that God has the interpretation for dreams.

Gen 40:8 And they said to him, "We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it."So Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."

The only information that should be given is all information from within the dream including as much detail as you can remember. Sometimes the smallest details are very important. Other times God may give the interpretation and the dream before the person interpreting the dream even hears the dream. God will do it His way and we must just let Him do it His way.

Many times I have had an interpretation that did not seem to fit the dream and have had to ask the person if there were any details left out . When they said yes I forgot this. This little missing piece was all that was needed and now my answer to them fit the dream fully and I was able to give it to them.. Other times I have asked the Lord ,is this all of it and He said yes, give it. And they understood it even though I did not. The person interpreting does not need to understand they just have to be sure the answer is coming from The Holy Spirit of God.

DO NOT give any information about yourself , your beliefs, how you felt at the time, etc. If the person asks for any information other than from the dream itself, they do not understand interpreting a dream from God . Do not trust them for an answer. The only exception would be if they ask if you have the interpretation of the dream. If you do they should either confirm or deny your interpretation-- nothing else, if they want to discuss it DO NOT. They will mislead you.

A warning if you are interpreting dreams. You are dealing with a person's life here, it may be life or death for them. You must be sure the person understands “ do not take my word for this until you are sure the Holy Spirit is confirming it to you.” . And my personal belief is if you are not willing to stake you life on the interpretation then—DO NOT GIVE IT.

A warning to the person with the dream-- There is only ONE interpretation. So if you are getting aswers from many people and they are different you will be confused and may miss the real meaning that is why you must have confirmation from the Holy Spirit that you have THE answer. Usually He will quicken it to you when you hear THE interpretation.

The person interpreting the dream may not have an answer for you for a while. Sometimes this is a timing issue with God and others for different reasons.

You also need to understand that God also gives nightmares. Oh I know some of you are saying oh yeah,!! but here is scripture to confirm it.

Job 7:13 13 When I say, 'My bed will comfort me, My couch will ease my complaint,' 14 Then You scare me with dreams And terrify me with visions, 15 So that my soul chooses strangling And death rather than my body.

This was during Job's time of trouble and he is talking to the Lord.. Check the context , it is truth.

If someone gives you a dream interpretation that was obtained any way other than from the Holy Spirit it IS NOT THE INTERPRETATION. If they say "I think" or "I believe" then it probably is not the interpretation. God speaks to people in dreams in a manner they understand. It does not have to make sense to the interpreter, he is only a messenger. what means something to me may mean the exact opposite to you and if God is speaking to me the same information will have a different meaning than if He was speaking to you..

Unfortunately many churches teach "dream interpretation with their list of meanings.. This is an unGodly, and dangerous teaching and must be exposed for what it is. I have seen too many people hurt by false .interpretations.

Sometimes the interpretation is available right away and other times it can be years before it is available. I have even seen someone speak something not knowing what they were doing but the person with the dream said "thank you God now I understand." it was the interpretation to a dream that person had asked God to interpret. We have to understand scripture and how it applies to our own lives.

Also remember, the dream may not be fulfilled for years. I have seen dreams that were not fulfilled for over 20 years. But when that situation presented it self the person remembered the dream and knew what to do.

One other caution, God will use who HE will to give THE interpretation...

One of the most important things I ever heard from God was delivered to me by a person I did not like and did not trust. When he came and said I have a word for you from God, I was skeptical and expected it to be something he had made up, but as soon as I said” then tell me” he started to speak and God said “LISTEN CLOSELY” and I was glad I did.

You must be willing to hear God His way if you want THE interpretation.. Remember Balaam's life was saved because he listened to a donkey.

Please understand this is not a game to a Christian, this is important. Never believe anything anyone, including me tells you until you have confirmed it is scriptural truth, by the scriptures and the Holy Spirit. It could cost you your life if you are wrong.

God bless you as you follow Him.
