If You Want To See What They Saw in the Book Of Acts...

Updated on October 8, 2009

A little of my testimony

I remember when I first got saved by reading the Bible. Most of you reading this hub don’t know my testimony. I’ll give a little of it here. It was July 1993 and I had been arrested for auto theft, and possession. I believed I was about to spend a long time in prison. So I came up with a plan. I set out to prove to the local sheriff that I could be trusted with a trustee position. At the particular county I was being held in, trustees were barely watched. They were even allowed to hang out on the front porch. Outside! If I could get that position I would easily be able to escape. I asked a friend that had been locked up for a year, how to go about becoming a trustee. He pointed one out and said, “Jeremy over there got all holy joe and they let him out of the cage.” So I requested a Bible from the chaplain and proceeded to sit at the table in front of the camera reading the Bible everyday. I read it from cover to cover in front of that camera.

Anyway that was years ago and my plan to escape from jail didn’t work but I did manage to find Jesus. Praise the Lord!

Well I brought that up because of the title of this hub. “See what they saw in the book of Acts”. I remember when I read the Bible for the first time as an unregenerate heathen, the whole Bible was amazing to me, but the book that stood out the most was the book of acts. I mean the miraculous can be found all throughout the Bible. But the highest concentration of it is found in the book about when God’s people began walking in the power of the name of Jesus Christ!

In the book of Acts and in the name of Christ, they were baptized in fire and filled with the Holy Ghost, spoke in foreign tongues, cast out demons, struck wizards blind, shook off deadly snake bites, survived shipwrecks, commanded cripples to walk, opened the eyes of the blind, raised the dead, were rescued from prisons by angels, miraculously transported across lands, and saw thousands at a time come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior! I mean the people weren’t exaggerating when they said in Act’s 17 that Christians were turning the world upside down!

Acts 17:6b These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

They saw the power of God as never before, in the book of Acts! All in the name above all names, the name of Jesus the Christ! We need to see that power fall again. I don’t believe as some teach that God only allowed the miraculous during the first century to establish His church. One of the reasons I don’t believe that is because I’ve witnessed the miraculous in my own life. I have seen people healed, I have seen demons cast out, I have been baptized with fire and spoken in tongues! But the main reason I don’t believe that miracles have passed, is because of what I read in the Bible.

Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh

That verse (which is quoting Joel 2:28) doesn’t say in the beginning of the last days, or for a short time in the last days. It says “In the last days.” and if they were in the last days, 2000 years ago, we are now most definitely in the last seconds! And now more than ever I believe God is going to start pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh! I believe that we can and will see what they saw in the book of Acts!

Which brings me back to the title of this hub. “If You Want To See What They Saw in the Book of Acts...” As you can see it’s an incomplete sentence. Let me finish it now. If you want to see what they saw in the book of Acts, you’ve got to do what they did in the book of Acts!

You’ve got to do what they did in the Book of Acts!

That’s right you’ve got to do what they did in the book of Acts. In the book of Acts they were in the church. According to Acts 13:1,2 Even Paul the apostle had to be in the church, ministering unto the Lord and fasting and praying before the Holy Ghost would send him out to do the work that God had called him too.

In The Church

If you want to see what they saw in the book of Acts, you’ve also got to be in the church. That means submitted to a local body. I don’t care what kind of “testimony” someone has, or how smart someone thinks they are. The Holy Spirit is not going to send you out until you’ve thoroughly hooked yourself into a local church. If by some chance you manage to promote and send yourself out, your ministry will eventually fail. It will never live up to it’s full potential even if you’re doing exactly what God had originally called you to do.

Minister Unto The Lord

Then you’ve got to be ministering unto the Lord. According to Matthew chapter six it’s the things you do in secret that minister to the Lord. That means not always seeking the positions that will get you to be seen or exalted. Some people join a church and automatically want to be put in a spotlight position. If they’re not, they leave claiming that no one appreciated them. But if you want to minister to God, you’ll do those things that no one else wants to do. Like fasting, and praying in secret, mowing the lawn, or cleaning the sanctuary. I used to clean out the toilets of a small church in Derby, Kansas. As a result of that and other such services I ministered unto the Lord with I was eventually given a spotlight position. My ministry grew rapidly even to the point of being broadcasted. And I was invited to preach all over Kansas and Texas. I was rewarded openly just like Matthew 6:4 said I would be! That is until I lost my focus for awhile. But that’s another story.

Preach the Gospel

What they did most of all in the book of Acts was to preach the gospel and tell people about Jesus! If you want to see what they saw in the book of Acts, the most important thing that you need to be doing is preaching what they preached in the book of Acts. Jesus and Him crucified! In other words you’ve got to share your faith. You’ve got to tell your friends, loved ones, and even strangers about Jesus! Because just like in the book of Acts, it’s when you preach the name of Jesus, that the power of Jesus will flow through you!

So go out and do what they did in the book of acts. Hook up with a local Church, serve in that Church, and bring people into that Church. If you do that you will see what they saw, because God will bless you I promise!

I like what you said: "If you want to see what they saw in the book of Acts, you’ve got to do what they did in the book of Acts!" The apostles took ACTion according to Jesus' commission starting from Jerusalem, their own backyard (Ac 1:8). The acts of the apostles empowered by the Holy Spirit. Seeing what they saw, behaving what they believed, and doing what they did! Quite a challenging hub you have here. It helped me process our ongoing story in the book of Acts.
