Online Bible Verses - James Chapter 4: Humble Ourselves Before God
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:10NIV
How do we humble ourselves? By knowing we are too small in and of ourselves. Outside of, or in denial of, the Lord, we only have ourselves. Looking deeper into self, we know of unique and personal weakness which makes grappling with the world an exercise in futility.
My friend asked me today, “How are you doing?”. My reply, “Better than I deserve.” (Dave Ramsey). Scripture tells me what I deserve. But it also tells me what I can attain, given the good news God has for me. That news tells me that all deficiency and defect can and will be overlooked. Grace has generated my get out of jail free card.
So I can have peace in the face of all that is harrowing. Know that God has the strings, and will pull them in such a way as to keep me righted and on the path he has laid out for me.
Another friend stopped by my lab bench and threw out another quote we often laugh about: “Whatever it is you do, don’t”. Meaning, what you habitually do outside of God’s guiding hand, do not. The reason, what we do of our own accord has proven over time to be the wrong thing. Rather, we should humble ourselves before God, and put our days and associated paths chosen in His hands. Know we are small, but He is bigger than any obstacle put before us. He will lift us up, and effectively, make us big enough to handle whatever we encounter.
