Lies and the consequence

Updated on December 7, 2015

People lie. It seems to be human nature. The problem with lying is first and foremost SIN. It goes against God and it comes directly from the father of lies—Satan. Secondly, a person who lies loses the trust of those around them.

When we lie, we do the work of satan.

*John 8:44 (NKJV)

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Right from the beginning we know that Satan lied and worked on having humanity take part in his lies.

*Genesis 3:4-5 (NKJV)

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
*Genesis 4:9 (NKJV)

9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”

He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

In the beginning he lied and deceived Eve, then in another instance we find that Cain lied about his brother Abel. So we know satan has been at work for thousands of years, and even today people will lie and deceive—not just in the world, but we find it amongst those who claim to be a follower of Christ. We must always be on guard and aware of the lies coming against us, and also be aware of our own tongue that we always be truthful in talk and action.
Lying is mentioned many times in the Bible. In the next three Proverbs we are told that lying is an abomination to the Lord and also that liars will perish. But they that deal truthfully are a delight to Him. Again I will say that we must always be truthful.

*Proverbs 6:16-17 (KJV)

16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

*Proverbs 12:22 (KJV)

22 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.
*Proverbs 19:9 (KJV)

9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Many times we are warned about lying, whether it is in words or deed. All through scripture and from birth on we are told to be truthful. However, some people will say that some lies are worse than others, they separate lies calling some lies ‘white lies’ which they claim are not as bad as others. But a lie is a lie, there is no difference. Ananias and Sapphira died because of lying.

*Acts 5:1-10 (KJV)

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

When a person prophecy, they must do so honestly. When they say, “The Lord says…” they better speak truth. I have known some people that claim that the Lord said something but it was a lie. This happens often. Many times people will prophecy falsely to tickle another persons ear for one reason or another, sometimes they do it to control a person , to use them or keep them in a church. Whatever the reason—a lie is a lie. This is very dangerous.

*Jeremiah 23:32 (KJV)

32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord.

*Psalm 55:23 (KJV)

23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

We live in a world that is filled with people swayed by the enemy to live for themselves, to do whatever they want whenever they want and however they want. If it makes them feel good, they do it. They have no care for anyone else.It is a world of self pleasing people. Of-course there are those who live for the Lord and some who do not follow Christ but do right in their eyes and won’t hurt others.
It is of utmost importance and utmost urgency that we pray for each other and encourage each other to remain strong and steadfast in the word of God and continue to follow the one and only Saviour—Jesus Christ.

Revelation 21:8 (KJV)

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 2:2 (KJV)

2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Do not lie, do not slander. Remain truthful in all you say and do. Jesus is with you and will help you in all you say and do as long as you are willing to live according to His will. Pray always, seek Him always. Allow Jesus to be your moral compass so that you may live a long and fruitful life here and for eternity.

*Psalm 34:12-13 (KJV)

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

*Ephesians 4:25 (KJV)

25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

It is true that we all sin and fall short, but there is hope, there is always hope. Jesus is in whom we must trust and give ourselves to. He can and He will take away sin, but we must repent (turn from sin) and follow Christ. Jesus is the only one who can save us and He wants to save you.

Here is a Psalm one can pray every day.
Psalm 23 (KJV)

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
