Selfie is now a real word!!
Selfie – "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website" – has been named word of the year 2013 by Oxford Dictionaries' editors, after the frequency of its usage increased by 17,000% over the past 12 months.
Why do they do it?
Now given the way that the use of the word has increased, presumably so has the act itself.. Younger people think it perfectly natural to share photographs of themselves with their friends, for I am assuming that it is mainly them, but who knows?
Those of us who are older can't quite get why you would want to take pictures of yourself, never mind share them with others. We may even think it's because the world is becoming more self-obsessed.
Are their friends really interested in seeing photos of fairly mundane things that people are involved in? I can understand if you are spending time doing something really unusual or are in a very interesting place that few people have been, but take a photo of the place , not of yourself surely?
The Bible encourages us to think less of ourselves and “to love our neighbours as we love ourselves”, even to the extent of putting their needs before our own. It also says “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4 ESV
The one thing we can't do for ourselves
The one thing that we can't do is save ourselves from our sin, no matter how hard we try or how good we are. Jesus commanded us to “ love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:12-14ESV And lay down His life He did, by dying for us on the cross to reconcile us with God.
Sharing our love, not our picture
If we accept Jesus as the Son of God, we are encouraged to share what He has done and is doing in our lives, with our friends and others we meet. Even then, the focus is on what He has done for us and not what we are doing. But if a selfie can get that message across, well perhaps it's not so bad after all?
The last word
Thank God that He was selfless when He sent us Jesus to die for us.
The last, last word
Ami being too harsh on people that take selfies?
Do you take selfies regularly? If so, leave a comment to let us know why, please?
