More Reflections on the Word of God

Updated on February 1, 2011

The Word of God reveals the Will of God

The Lord Himself said, "Who are My brethren? My brethren (My mother and brothers and sisters) are those who hear the word of God and DO it." Luke 8:21. "Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep (observe, obey) it," Luke 11:28. There is a great danger of reading the Word for head-knowledge only. Oh, may God give us grace to obey the Word of God. The Word of God reflects the Will of God. You cannot know the will of God without reading the Word of God.

Downgrading the Word of God

Jesus said clearly and emphatically: Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matt 4:4. Are you reading the Word of God every day? Are you meditating on the Word of God? Are you meditating over the Word of God day and night? Is the Word speaking to you? Is the Word like light to you? Is it life to you? A Christian who neglects the Word of God, and goes in for experiences, feelings, visions, dreams - is downgrading the Word of God. And when you downgrade the Word of God you are downgrading Christ.

The All-Sufficient Word of God

Do you know that the word of God is a healing word, Ps 107.20; a strengthening and quickening word, Ps 119.38, 50; an enlightening and guiding word, Ps 119.105; a word that is like fire and a hammer that breaks the rocks (of the human heart), Jer 23:29; a word that casts out evil spirits, Matt 8:16; a word that melts frigid and icy hearts, Ps 147:18; a word that is like milk and honey – a word that brings life, eternal life; a word that saves souls; a word that sanctifies; a word that has the power to lift you up from the miry pit of sin and set you high upon a Rock? Oh, the wonderful all-sufficient word of God.

The Word of God and the Anointing of the Spirit

The Word of God and 'the word of the Lord'. There is an interesting difference here. In the OT we read of how 'the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah', to Ezekiel, to the prophets. As we wait on the Word of God, the Word will speak to us and become to us 'the word of the Lord came...' The word of the Lord has to come to us. The word of the Lord has to speak to us.

We have to speak what the Lord gives us. We have to speak not our message, or what we think, but what God gives us. May God put His words in our mouth.

The Word becomes a fruitful word only through the anointing of the Spirit. That is why we pray: "Lord, put Your words into my mouth", Jer 1:9, Luke 12:12, Matt 10:20. The Lord has to speak to us and through us.

Quiet Meditation over God’s Word

Mary sat down at the Lord's feet and heard His word, Luke 10:39. The Lord loved to come to Bethany. There He had a little family that cared for Him. The Lord wanted to share His heart. Mary chose the best part. She came and sat at the Lord's feet. She had an ear for the Lord's word. She was eager to listen to His voice. I believe, friends, that for a long time we have neglected quiet meditation over the word of God.

We have neglected our daily Quiet Time. What did Martin Luther say? "I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer." If only we could spend an hour alone with God every morning! May we learn to sit at the Lord's feet, having an ear to hear, a heart to receive and grace to obey.

The Word of God: A Sword and a Shield

The Lord cast out evil spirits by His word, Matt 8:16. The Lord Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness by the Word of God. The Word of God is not only a sword; it is a shield. It is the Christian's armour. You cannot fight in the Christian warfare without being strong in the Word. Shall I tell you something? Aim to read the Bible 50 times, 100 times. Ask God to give you a hunger for the Word of God, a passion for the Bible.

Men’s Idle Words and the Weighty Words of God

Men speak many idle words. We fail to realize that we have to give an account to God for every careless word we have spoken. Let your words be few, and encouraging. (But be not afraid to rebuke, when necessary.) Men speak many idle words. But the words of God, the Word of God, every little verse, every passage, even a single word itself - has such great weight and value.

Even single words like 'mercy', 'grace', 'compassion', 'glory', 'love' (agape love) – both in the Hebrew and the Greek - have such great depth and meaning.

Speak the Word!

Look at the Roman centurion (Matt 8). He told Christ: "Just speak the word'...or 'Speak the word only'. For him, the word coming from the mouth of Jesus was enough. It was a word of power and authority to him. He submitted himself to that word. And that, dear friend, is faith! To submit to the word of God. Remember Mary. What did she say to the angel? 'Be it unto me according to your word.' Luke 1:38.

Craze for Prophecy: Who will be Raptured?

There is a huge group of people who are obsessed about prophecy and future events. They read books on prophecies and themselves make prophecies. Some even call themselves prophets. They talk about pre-trib and post-trib, pre-millenial and post-millenial, and all that sort of thing. Now I believe in the Rapture. But I know that only those who are Christ-like will be raptured.

It is possible that you may be an expert on prophecy, and the rapture – but, very likely, you yourself may not be raptured at all. Should you seek mere knowledge about events, or should you not rather imbibe the qualities of Christ?

Standing upon the Word of God; Having the Testimony of Jesus

We are living in the last days. There are spirits of confusion to confuse the children of God; there are spirits of corruption to defile the children of God; there are spirits of deception to deceive the children of God with falsehoods and lies. The enemy is aiming to divide the children of God, to divide and scatter. We need to stand upon the Word of God; and we need to have the Testimony of Jesus... "If you are standing on natural ground; on doctrinal ground; on theological ground; on interpretation ground; if you are standing on any of those grounds, you will not hold together. You will not hold together. If you are standing on the ground of Christ only, and His Lordship, that is the answer." TAS

You may be members of very good churches - Evangelical, Baptist, Reformed - but you need to be 'born from above'; the Spirit of Christ must indwell you. Read the Bible for yourself and be saturated with the Word of God.Have a life of fellowship and prayer. And exhibit the Testimony of Jesus (that Jesus is Lord, and that Christ Himself is 'living in you and is increasing in you', Gal 2:20, 4:19).

Loved this Roland. I really appreciate you speaking such truth.. Although not popular with most men it certainly is needed in these evil times. I spend time with the Lord each morning in my prayer journal and in His Word, but I feel convicted in that I dont wait on him silently like i should to listen to/for Him. I ask that you please pray for me and others like me to gain the patience and endurance to be still in His presence. You are an encouragement as always brother. (Did not mean to hit the 'funny' button by the way!!)

      Wonderful hub Pratonix,

I miss my morning reading and prayer. How true it is that if you don't have it you miss it and things become chaotic.

Thanks for your words of wisdom. They are refreshing at a time they are needed.
