Take The Red Pill

Updated on April 6, 2015

Here it is... Will you take it?

Blue Pill or Red Pill Matrix Movie Clip

In The Matrix

Are you stuck in the Matrix but don't understand what you're stuck in? Are you trying to figure out answers to important life questions but find yourself directed to numb up, dumb down - stop asking so many questions, stop making waves, etc?

Perhaps you're stuck in the illusion - the Matrix.

If you want to understand the Matrix, a good analogy is actually in the film, The Matrix and as far as films go, the philosophical and symbolic details in the film might be more true to life (or where life on this planet is heading) than what your teachers are telling you, what you see in newspapers and in news bulletins on television, etc.

A symbolic, trademark gesture in the film, The Matrix, is when Morpheus offers Neo either "The Red Pill" or "The Blue Pill."

Neo has complete freedom to choose which pill to ingest...

The Red: Separate from the Matrix and plunge into the unknown - make decisions, be accountable for those decisions and think for yourself.

The Blue: Disregard the existence of the Matrix, numb down and move into the comforts of "the known" - let the Matrix close all around you - allow others to do your thinking.

Short and Long Term Side Effects

After taking the red pill you may experience the following side effects:

  • Disorientation and Confusion (short-term)
  • Anxiety (short or long term)
  • Mental distress (short of long term)
  • Dissonance (short or long term)
  • Difficulty with current relationships (short or long term)

What these things are about...

Almost all of these things are related to something already mentioned in the list - DISSONANCE.

Dissonance occurs when competing beliefs, opinions and attitudes challenge each other for the same space in a system of beliefs.

ie: with authority issues, we often feel a dissonance/mental discomfort if we find out that an authority figure has presented items of interest that we come to believe in but find out later are not the whole story or are not the truth. Biggest example - SANTA... when we find out Santa is a mythical persona, we often REFUSE to believe the new data for a while. We are often very upset, disappointed and some people are even CRUSHED emotionally for a little while to learn that the jolly red-suited gift-bringing man is a story figure. It often takes a few days - or even a few years for youngsters to get over the realization that Santa is a mythical persona. This realization, for most of us, is our first experience of disappointment with authority and feelings of emotional and attitude dissonance.

Santa is a minor issue when placed beside entire populations who learn, starting in grade school, that patriotism is "good" and that love of country is expected and is part of a person's national identity... As compared with the Santa myth, for some reason, myths about patriotism, nationalism, race preferences, political preferences are things that are rarely debunked. The belief in the latter things are encouraged for years on end until people can't cope with their own identities unless their own personas include their version of nationalism, patriotism, race preferences, political and even familial and gender preferences. Each and every single one of these items is infinitely more complex than the belief in Santa - yet most people will REFUSE TO BELIEVE that all the above are actually ALL SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONS - from social, political and gender preferences right down to the jolly red-suited guy.

Noam Chomsky - a message for humanity

There are NO short term benefits

Unfortunately, taking the red pill will present absolutely no "RED"-ily visible short term benefits to those willing to swallow the crimson awareness medicine. You'll have to chuck it back and wait for a future time to see the medicinal value of the red pill.

Once the red pill goes all the way down and your body and mind starts to absorb it, likely your behavior will change and other people will notice a change in you.

Again - for the short term - you're not going to see benefits.

People will point fingers at you - call you ridiculous, nuts, crazy and by other derogatory terms.

Tuck your shirt-tails in, look ahead into the distance and resolve to reach for the long term benefits...

Don't worry - there are at least 10 people on earth who won't think you're crazy for NOT giving in to common societal belief systems...let the red pill do its work... a handful of people will never laugh at you for asking questions - even a few silly ones. Red pill peeps are asking questions themselves...

Long Term Benefits

You will gradually awaken from a slumber-like, near-hypnosis-like belief system that has been leading nowhere in a great hurry.

You may begin to see great value in other human beings and see different nationalities and races for what they are... people just like you - well, not exactly like you - but flesh and blood like you, people with feelings of worth, spiritual worth, emotional and mental value, along with their physical shape. Perhaps you'll also no longer wish to "be at war" or "side with your politicians" against particular races and national populations.

You'll probably begin to see yourself as something more than a sort of livestock for a Capitalist pseudo-machine, and will find you're worth more - in body, mind, spirit - than you ever thought you were worth before. Along with this, you'll likely feel empowered to take on more accountability and realize that freedom means structure after all but that you SHOULD BE INVOLVED in naming what that healthy structure is...

Don't worry, you won't become an anarchist - that is - if you swallowed the whole pill and didn't try to palm it or hide it under your tongue and let it only partially dissolve...

The Matrix - Script and Quotes, Excerpts

Written by

Larry and Andy Wachowski

Matrix Manuscript

  • Fave Quotes/Scene... This scene is with Neo on his computer at the beginning of the movie... it's from the manuscript, so it tells of actions as well as speech/text.

"SCREEN Do you want to know what the Matrix is, Neo?

Neo is frozen when he reads his name.

SCREEN SUPERASTIC: Who said that? JACKON: Who's Neo? GIBSON: This is a private board.

If you want to know, follow the white rabbit.

NEO What the hell...

SCREEN TIMAXE: Someone is hacking the hackers! FOS4: It's Morpheus!!!!! JACKON: Identify yourself.

Knock, knock, Neo.

A chill runs down his spine and when someone KNOCKS on his door he almost jumps out of his chair.

He looks at the door, then back at the computer but the message is gone.

He shakes his head, not completely sure what happened. Again, someone knocks.

Cautiously, Neo approaches the door."

  • Morpheus and Neo - Red Pill/Blue Pill Scene

MORPHEUS: It's that feeling you have had all your life. That feeling that something was wrong with the world. You don't know what it is but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad, driving you to me. But what is it?

The Matrix is everywhere, it's all around us, here even in this room. You can see it out your window, or on your television. You feel it when you go to work, or go to church or pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

NEO What truth?

MORPHEUS That you are a slave, Neo. That you, like everyone else, was born into bondage... ... kept inside a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind.

[Outside, the WIND BATTERS a loose PANE of glass]

MORPHEUS Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

NEO How?

MORPHEUS Hold out your hands.

[In Neo's right hand, Morpheus drops a red pill]

MORPHEUS This is your last chance. After this, there is no going back.

[In his left, a blue pill]

MORPHEUS You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe.

[The pills in his open hands are reflected in the glasses]

MORPHEUS You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

* Note - the script I could find is from Larry and Andy Wachowski who lost a six-year-long dispute with Sophia Stewart who already proved that she was the original writer of The Matrix. I have only provided the link to the Wachowski version because it was most easily available and contains the words used in the movie to illustrate a couple of my fave scenes.

An article you might be interested in favouring Stewart as the writer who wrote The Matrix...

Mention of Plato's Allegory of the Cave in comments by CloudExplorer

In the comments section, CloudExplorer has mentioned Plato's Allegory of the Cave and I agree with CloudExplorer - inside the cave is a realm for those who take the blue pill...

Those who take the blue pill/those inside the cave are viewing shadows, not reality - and all that comes into view for these people are things that powerful people wish for captives to see. This means, of course, that powerful people are content (pleased) for most people to view shadows and make up erroneous explanations/truth based on the shadows. At least the powerful people always will know where to find those who swallow blue pills/remain inside the cave.

Taking the red pill - exiting the cave puts people in a position to see more than shadows, hear more than what is scripted for inside the cave...

However - exiting the cave (taking the red pill) has consequences and can never be forgotten, undone, etc., and the blue pill takers will FIGHT against those who exit the cave and try to return to speak truths of what's outside the cave.

Blue Pill alignment: sheep/sheeples, comfort, clinging to habitual patterns, short-cuts, disinterest, lack of responsibility for learning/doing

Red Pill alignment: explorers/trekkers (Yeah, some TREKKIES, too) and sojourners, willingness to move out of comfortable spaces/thoughts, replacing habitual patterns with different kinds of patterns, long pathways, curiosity, accountability for learning/doing.

Those who swallow the red pill might want to get some new boots

      Hello wba108 from upstate NY,

Thanks for commenting! I think you hit upon one of the most important beliefs to question - political beliefs - that so many people refuse to look into in any depth.

Good thoughts here! Most people never allow themselves to really question their core beliefs, its much easier to just find facts that support those beliefs. A good example of this is regarding political beliefs, very few people change what they believe unless they're forced to come face to face with a reality that they choose to deny but could no ignore!

Hello Etherealenigma... thanks for reading and for thoughtful responses! I wondered what people would think of the content/messages brought forth by both the "response to Matrix/Red Pill" as well as the Red Pill Forum vid. I think the girl's message is overgeneralized as she shares her thoughts. She does forget (maybe isn't aware that) there are a few religions who emphasize scholarship, asking questions, finding truths out for yourself instead of just following along with a speaker/preacher in the manner of sheep. In this, I am withya - some who are dedicated to undertaking certain religious journeys are very much in the Red Pill category.

I like how you picked out some quotes from the vid... putting that stuff about Columbus and Jackson in text format one more time always seems a good idea to me. (The victors are the ones who write the history books, eh?).

I like the white pill tidbit. Yeah this makes sense. I'm pretty sure Blake4d will see this tidbit sometime and run with it. Etherealenigma, I just heard a similar description of sheeple-ness and slavery w/pharma overtones on coast 2 coast am radio a night or two ago... were you listening, as well? Your comments on this topic fit so well with what was on the radio recently: we're just engaged in a different kind of slavery than we were 100, 200, 300 years, the powerheads have managed to arrange that - instead of "keeping" slaves, we are our own "keepers" and pay for ourselves (TAXES) while still slaving away. Many slave masters of years gone by fed and clothed their slaves, took care of medical expenses if/when the slaves got sick... while slaves worked hard and were kept essentially poor. (Poor but NOT unhealthy - for who would do all the work then, if they were to all fall sick all the time?). Now, many people can't afford health care, many are unable to afford GOOD, NUTRITIOUS FOOD to eat on a consistent basis (white pills in our food - I heard that!)...

Quality of life in North America isn't as high as people think it is and unless they are red pill-inclined, aren't going to realize this until they get sick, lose significant hours at work, start missing payments.... and figure out they weren't working on wages, in the first place, enough to have emergency funds saved up for all this... Many of us now pay (In North America) for essentials... food, water - WATER for gosh sakes... bottled water is safer (if you read the labels carefully enough to make sure no "white pill" junk is in the water)... so the powerful corporations make is hardly possible at all to even be healthy if we do have full time jobs... and here I am going on and on and on.... tangents lol

If you go out of the cave, Etherealenigma, gather a few like yourself while you're out... and take a team back into the cave... it can be DANGEROUS just telling the truth about reality to people who watch fireshadows on the cave walls and who are afraid to believe in sunshine! Use the buddy system haha!

Thanks for slinging some more ideas around.

Mythbuster, the video in which the girl attempted to defend the red pill choice by stating that religion was the place of blue pillers is completely off base. First of all, she lumped every spiritual belief system under the label of religion, which in and of itself is wrong, based on fundamental differences. Secondly, she stated that people who believe in a "religion" are asleep.

On that last point, she is partially correct. Mainstream religion is for sleepwalkers who are content with being led by their noses, and are too lazy to pick up the book and read/study for themselves. In this point, I am referencing Christianity, or the many who claim it, but don't walk it.

The real deal on that tip is relationship, and in order to have one with God, it requires an ongoing investment of your time; it requires hard work, and is nothing comfortable or easy. Those who are really in to win it with God, know that sacrifice is necessary, and is sometimes a daily thing. Those individuals who take that stand, and walk in that level of faith, definitely are red pill takers.

The ones who sit up under a pastor of some sort; relying solely on his word and explanations of what scripture says, or what God wants, and do not actively participate individually in their own spiritual education; are blue pill takers just as much as those who let other people's misdirected behavior and abusive situations dictate their decisions based on fear, or, those who simply choose to deny any participation in the education and growth of their spirits.

"People who don't conform become confusing beings to those who are more comfortable with conforming..." This is so true, and even more so in church circles, where man-made rules of the church oftentimes seems to supercede the grace that Christ advocated.

"So much of what we are taught is just propoganda. Early on we are taught that Columbus is a hero, or at least I was, in school. Later, I find out he was a genicidal maniac. I was taught that Jackson was a hero to find later that he killed so many natives by sending infected blankets on purpose... not a heroic act. I wonder how anyone has faith in the teachings of childhood anymore when so many are but an illusion designed to manipulate the masses." Amen to that, sista.

As to what blake4d said about the white pill...that one is the one they give us from the medical/pharm/big chemical side of things, when our proverbial battery is running down, and we are not producing as much energy wise as they'd like. When we are deemed as useless to them, they hide the white pill in our food and/or openly give it to us proclaiming it's for our health, to kill us off, because they have used us up, and now we are a drain on them. It would be more profitable to be rid of us, than to keep such a feeble energy source around, so the white pill is for that purpose.

You know mythbuster, after reading Joyus's response...I wondered how you didn't put in that video from Pink Floyd on being "Comfortably Numb." The first video did have the hammers though.

Cloud Explorer pointed out something: "Plato's allegory of the cave", give that baby a spin on Google, and drop another red pill while your at it, because wonderland is about to get a bit hectic once you find where that white rabbit truly came hoping from." I had not even considered that the Alice in Wonderland story was another such demonstration like the matrix on the real and the least, not on that same level, but now it makes a lot more sense. Maybe I should really start delving into fairytales to see what's really there in the messages.

Tie Plato's philosophy into the matrix title, and you'll see what the blue pill has done to you all this time since the movies first release, prior to any taking of the red.

I'm quite surprised there was no mention of such here, but to no avail, this hub was superb, Voted up & I am an architect of matrices (True master of many metaphysical yet mathematical domains) & not just a single Matrix, hence no need for pill taking of any kind. LOL

Drat it! I still don't trust the ones who offer the red pill. I rarely take pills anyway, unless it's Dramamine for my motion-sickness.

I do like the Matrix series, as harmless fantasy. I'm trying to remember.....did Cypher take the blue pill after he turned on Morpheous and agreed to be put back into the Matrix?

I think after trying to figure out all the pill-possibilities, I need an aspirin 'cause I'm getting a headache! ha

    • mythbuster profile imageAUTHOR

10 years ago from Utopia, Oz, You Decide

      HI Brenda Durham.

The red pill originated in the world after truth was manipulated by those with ulterior motives of dominating the masses. (not a "where" question - but a "when" - abstract concepts)

One obtains the red pill by seeking out the truth, being fearless/courageous (even if afraid) and understanding that the truth might not look like the social constructions we've been spoon-fed as "reality"... moving forward toward truths will bring one closer to the red pill...

Those who offer the red pill have seen truths and have rejected the harmful social and societal constructions and manipulations of dominant ideologies. Those who offer the red pill are willing to stand with/beside or walk with those who also seek the truth, never abandoning them as their eyes/minds adjust through dissonance, adoption of truthful concepts while ignorance is shed from their minds. They wait for people to arrive who ask for the truth of things. They are also willing to let those who can't handle the truth end up taking the blue pill.

You may trust the offerer of the red pill, for there is no motive other than truth-seeking and ignorance-shedding in the holder of the red pill. The holder of the red pill will also hold a blue pill... it is your choice about what pill to take - therefore, the holder of the red pill has nothing to lose or gain by your choice... you will lose or gain by your choice - not by the character or motives of the pill holder.

The red pill is not poison. The blue pill is not poison. Both effects of both pills are already suggested and known. It is your choice about what pill to take. Do you want to see truths or do you want to live under covert manipulations of truths, believing that facade and fantasy is reality?

If the red pill is a placebo then some fears that people will have about the red pill will not be so worrisome now, will they? They'll just take the pill then nothing will happen... that is, if the red pill is a placebo, right?

      Hi mythbuster!

      I have a couple questions...

From where did the red pill originate?

How does one obtain the red pill?

      Who offers the red pill?

How do we know we can trust the offerer of the red pill?

What if the red pill is poisoned?

What if the red pill is a placebo?

That's more than a couple questions, sorry....

Great page! You're right everything isn't as it appears. There is a lot of deception going on and a lot of people think it's easier to just cover their eyes & blend in.

Each and every person is valuable & counts in the sight of God!

We all do have a mind, soul and body and it's up to us to ensure that it is being fed correctly and that we don't perish for the lack of knowledge.

Refuse the lies, don't accept them! This life is much to complex to just follow the crowd. We will answer to God on what we did decide to do & believe.

When truth is found, their will always be a price to pay. Just as living and accepting a lie, their will be a price to pay. We can either strive and protect the truth, our freedom or we will be apart of the lie as we live a life of chosen bondage.

Our choice truth or lie, freedom or bondage & slavery!

God isn't a respecter of persons, all have equal rights, all can have freedom & wisdom if sought after. Even if we have to suffer persecution & hate it will be worth it in the end. Just like Jesus suffered we will suffer as the Bible says. But we will never lose our soul because we took a stand!

Good work Mythbuster! So thought provoking!

I just used the Santa example as I am consistently surprised in my North American culture - by the elaborate lengths many families and parents go to in order to perpetuate the Santa myth. I was just using it mainly as an example of dissonance that a high number of people might identify with in North America and other regions where Santa is a big deal every year.

Mickey Dee, when the red pill liberates us from the box it is natural for others who don't understand to ridicule and name-call things related to the rabbit-hole that they don't or are afraid to understand. People who don't conform become confusing beings to those who are more comfortable with conforming, I think.
