The Attributes of God
Our God Is Awesome!
Characteristics of The Creator
Incomparable
2 Samuel 7:22
Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
God is the Creator of the universe, the Creator of everything seen and unseen. Who can be compared to Him? There is none that can compare to His greatness.
Inscrutable
Isaiah 40:28
Hath thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding.
God is mysterious to us in that we cannot understand how He never tires, is ever powerful, has all knowledge, has no beginning and no end. He is the source of everything that ever was or ever will be.
Unchangeable
Numbers 23:19
God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
God is Holy and without sin. He is steadfast and sure in His ways. He keeps His promises and His Word is to be trusted..
Omniscient
1 John 3:20
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
God knows the heart of every person. He knows all things past, present and future. He is all knowing. God has perfect knowledge and has no need to learn anything. His knowledge is infinite.
Foreknowing
Isaiah 48:3,5
(3) I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I have showed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. (5) I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I showed it to thee: less thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.
God has declared many things hundreds of years before they have happened. He has also prophesied things that are yet to come.
...thou art great
Impartial
1 Peter 1:17
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.
God does not look upon a person at his richness or poorness, nor at his race or color; but God looks upon the heart of man.
Longsuffering
Exodus 34:6,7
And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercies for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and fourth generation.
Our God is overwhelmingly gracious and slow to anger.
Vengeance
Deuteronomy 32:34-41
Is this not laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures? To me belongeth vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, Which dideat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you, and be your protection. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift my hand to heaven, and say, I live forever. If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgement; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.
God’s vengeance will be poured out on the ungodly. He will destroy all His enemies.
Wrath
Deuteronomy 32:22
For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
God’s anger is a right and just reaction to evil and unrighteousness.
He Is Spirit!
Invisible
John 1:18
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
God cannot be seen by man for He is Spirit and invisible. God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, has revealed God the Father to man. When men saw Jesus, they saw God. They felt God’s love and tenderness and heard Him speak. God’s characteristics and qualities were fully revealed through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Omnipresent
Psalm 139:7-12
Whither shall I go from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the utter most parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even in the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
God is everywhere, all the time. He is always there to guide you, protect you and provide for you. There is no where you can go to escape or hide from God.There is nothing that goes unnoticed by Him
Unequaled
Isaiah 40:13-25
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counselor hath taught Him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him in the path of judgement, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding? Behold the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. To whom then will ye liken God? Or what likeness will ye compare unto him? The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. Have ye not known? Have ye not heard? Hath it not been told you from the beginning? Have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in. That bringeth the princes to nothing: he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. Yea they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, there stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall whither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? Saith the Holy One.
God is the only source of eternal strength. He is incomparable and distinct from all others. All of creation was brought into existence by God without any outside help or guidance. He is unparalleled in His abilities, strength and wisdom.
Love
1 John 4:8,16
(8) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (16) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
We are born in a sinful state, but God loves us too much to leave us that way.God loves us so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God’s love is seen by others through us. God the Son brings us into fellowship with God the Father. He embraces each of us intimately on a personal level.
Mercy
Lamentations 3:22,23
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassion fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
God is merciful. Forgiveness is ours for the asking. When we truly repent of our sin, He is merciful and just and will forgive us of all unrighteousness.God’s compassion is infinite and inexhaustible.
Truth
Psalm 117:2
For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord.
Our God is righteous and true. He can be trusted always.
Just
Psalm 89:14
Justice and judgement are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
Our God is a just God. He is impartial in His judgements. No sin goes unaccounted for. If we trust in Christ and ask for forgiveness, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.
He is majestic...
Holy
Revelation 4:8
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
God is pure, holy, and cannot look upon sin.He is eternally and uniquely separate and distinct from all impurity. God’s holiness sets Him apart from all created beings. He is majestic, untainted and pure, free from sin and evil.
Eternal
Isaiah 57:15
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
God has existed forever with no beginning and no end.He always was, always is and always will be. God dwells in eternity. He created time. This is why he can know the beginning from the end.
Wise
Acts 15:18
Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
God has all knowledge and wisdom. Even in the darkest hour, God is working out His perfect plan. He never makes a mistake and never fails. The glory of His wisdom is displayed when He accomplishes that which seems impossible.
Infinite
1Kings 8:27
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
God is beyond measurement with no beginning, no end and no limits.
Omnipotent
Jeremiah 32:17,27
(17) Oh Lord God! Behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: (27) Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
His power and strength is limitless. There is nothing that is beyond His capabilities.
Unsearchable
Romans 11:33,34
O the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgements, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counselor?
We, with our limited human minds, cannot begin to understand the mind of the Lord. His ways are not our ways. His wisdom and understanding goes beyond that which we are capable of comprehending.
