The Helmet of Salvation

Updated on February 28, 2015

Gird Up! Cover Your Head!

"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11 KJV).

The armor of God is a necessity in order to be empowered to stand against the devices, maneuvers, plots, plans, wiles, strategies, and the assignments of the devil and his demonic cohorts; and against values which do not represent God.

For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke" (Isaiah 59:17 KJV).

The Lord put on righteousness as a breastplate, a shield of protection; and He put the helmet of salvation upon His head and so ought we to put it on and follow Him.

"So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him" (Isaiah 59:19 KJV).

When he comes at us like a flood the Spirit of God raises the standard from sub-standard, to warrior. We are at war whether you choose to believe it or not.

The helmet of salvation reminds us who saved us, how we are saved, when we were saved, how to live our salvation, where does salvation lead, how can we assist God in saving others. The helmet is all about salvation of the world and our holistic salvation. Salvation is the message inscribed on our helmets. The helmet articulates salvation.

The armor is how we protect our souls from the onslaught of evil, and it covers us as we renew our minds, as we change the way we think. In the illustration in this hub of the whole armor, can you see that the only part open is for seeing?

The faith that comes by hearing, and the hearing by the Word of God is under the whole armor. The hearing is under the armor protected by the helmet. Jesus warns us to take heed how we hear. and what we hear. It is imperative to protect our ears so that we obey the words of Jesus, when He counsels; he that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying. The Word of God is beneath and over the armor, and upon it covering our ears so that we hear no evil. Ears that are covered by the helmet will counteract every attack by obedience to the precepts and principles found in the Word of God. There is safety under the armor that is not experiential without it. Put it on!

What's under the helmet that needs protection? From the Bible we establish a foundational way of thinking that influences everything about us. Our perspectives, not only of the world, but of ourselves; our self esteem and how we feel about ourselves; our self concept of who we should be like, and who we could be like, Jesus Christ.

We travel through realms and dimensions into atmospheres and environments through intercessory prayer in which we need to only hear from God to enter into warfare. The power of the helmet of salvation is God, it is the Word of God we have hidden in our hearts not to sin against Him, it is protected by the Spirit of God empowering us to stand.

Christ in us the hope of glory. Our entire souls, our world view and our value system is under the helmet and needs this protection. The biblical and spiritual principles that give us our world view and how to think are underneath our helmets. Through the lens of our biblical world view we process information, and make judgments based on everything we have learned and are taught, and all of our experiences. A change of clothing, and godly character is covered by the blood wrought armor. Through our God ordained world view we are developing a system of thinking that guides our actions, words, perceptions and choices.

The Advantages of Wearing the Helmet of Salvation

The helmet of salvation is the focal point and aspect of the armor pinpointed in this writing. It is just as important as wearing a wool hat on a cold, cold, day to cover your head and ears from the elements of the cold that can cause a variety of things, if ignored. Sickness can leap us in a single bound if we fail to dress warmly naturally speaking. Oppression can leap us if we neglect our helmets spiritually speaking. The advantage of wearing our helmets is protection from all that threatens our well beings.

Forgetting or neglecting to cover the head and ears during frigid weather does not spill or spell out understanding the cold, we need wisdom to in order to use what we know correctly. We understand the cold, and we are witnesses of what it can cause if we ignore it. We can expose our selves to head colds and other sicknesses by not taking the necessary precautions. The same principles are true in the spirit realm too. There are contaminations, and toxins that can do us harm if we neglect to wear our whole armor. Failure to wear your armor weakens and make you vulnerable to all types of danger.

The Word of God that we read and study and deposit into our lives forms a solid foundation and materializes as our armor, the Word of God protects our armor from illegible penetration. Wearing it gives the forces of darkness no rights to assail us, because the helmet must be worn with the Word of God. No Word deposit, no helmet worn. Word up and wear your helmet, it is critical.

There is spiritual coldness we must be on guard for too. We are not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, therefore we are admonished to take unto us the whole armour of God, that we may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand, keep standing suited in the armour of God.

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17).

It is interesting that in taking the helmet of salvation, you must also take the Word of God too. Of course all of the armor is dependent upon the Word of God. In fact, the Word of God forms the helmet of salvation, all of the principles in the Word protect our souls. We cannot and will not protect our souls without feeding it the Word of God.

Failure to feed our souls the Word means we are not wearing our helmets to protect us against the wiles of the enemy. The Word of God forms a shield of protection over our souls that nothing, and no one can penetrate. It is the seal of protection. The helmet is not in effect without the Word of God. When we neglect reading and studying the Word we uncover our souls and expose every aspect to stimulus other than God's will. Will you wear your helmet, and protect your salvation? Yes, I heard you!

In the natural, we can distinguish between the helmet and a head covering or a hat. A helmet is oftentimes called a hardhat. Hard things aimed at the head can be dwarfed because of a helmet. For instance, riding a motorcycle and getting into an accident it has been determined that a helmet serves as protection and can preserve life when worn. We even know what it is like when it is severely cold outside to put on a hat which contains a duel purpose, cover our heads and ears. This is utterly important naturally speaking. It is even more essential spiritually speaking. The armor can be understood also by how we gird up during winter; layers of sweaters, scarves, gloves, so that the skin and body can't feel the frost and bitter cold. We understand the importance of this wisdom even when we do not follow these truths and choose to do otherwise. No one can withstand below -1 degree weather without properly reinforcing the clothing worn. Nor can any believer withstand evil and wickedness without putting on the whole armor, and having salvation as the central theme.

All of the whole armor of God is unquestionably imperative, and we are admonished to put on each piece so that we can withstand the wiles of darkness. The mind is a battle ground not a playground. We are warring for not just our minds, but the minds of others as well. This battle can only be successfully accomplished by taking each item of the armor seriously and soberly. The helmet of Salvation is the piece of armor I would like to zoom in on in this hub.

There are newscast quite often about motorcyclists and accidents where they were not wearing their helmets. We are told had they been wearing one it may have saved their lives or protected their head in the fall. We can glean and gather from these reports the importance of wearing a helmet to ride. Then there are construction workers who for the work they do also must wear a helmet for their protection.

We must take this seriously. When we wear our protective soul gear it helps us to stand against the wiles, strategies, maneuver, obstacles, plots and plan of the devil and prior to girding up, we discern that our fight is not with flesh and blood, or we would have to use a hard hat as others in the natural realm. We are not fighting a physical or natural fight, we are up against principalities which are assigned to infiltrate our souls with principles which are not biblical.

Putting on the helmet of salvation means that we are protecting our souls as we fill it with thoughts that revolve around all that Christ wrought for us on Calvary. Thoughts of salvation, how we were saved, what happened when we were saved, and what is currently transpiring on the path of salvation we are treading; future redemption of the flesh and all that God has planned for us.

The helmet is anointed with power to protect our souls and minds to prosper. It is a headdress full of power to withstand all evil. It protects the gifts and treasures we possess. As we request wisdom from above the helmet shields it so that we use knowledge correctly and it doesn't puff up. The helmet protects the discernment we need to judge between good and evil and to always desire to choose good. God has given us all things which pertain to life and godliness, righteousness and truth and we in turn must protect that investment by wearing our helmet.

We need the helmet to cover our souls which houses our intellects and minds which produce our thought patterns and eventually our speech. What we think we will inevitably speak. Every thought should be a hyperlink to the Godhead. Click the link and it navigates the soul to think about Christ and opens the windows of heaven.

Without the helmet that is no protection for the soul, it is open to stimulus and targeted by the opposition.

Pack your sword "the Word of God"

The Word of God is written on the helmet of salvation as a result of writing Jesus in our hearts and souls. We are like transcribers as we hear and believe the Word of God we transcribe it over our lives and it protects our souls from evil.

Evil thoughts are fiery darts assigned and sent to knock our helmets off and to penetrate our biblically inspired value system. The principles, precepts, counsels, warnings, admonitions, exhortations, instructions, directions, encouragements, chastisements we receive and all that the Word of God teaches and imparts to us is to fortify the helmet and keep it in place over our souls. The helmet covers and guards our souls with the fortitude to make our transformation experiential, practical, realistic and ongoing towards the perfection and completion of our souls. The Word of God washes our minds from impurity and grants us the pureness we need to posture ourselves to the attainment of holiness.

The only influence that should be able to get under the helmet of salvation should be the Word and Spirit of God. Everything other than God should be outside and not inside the helmet. Every attack against the helmet has to be guarded by the sword of the spirit, the Word of God.

Case scenario: You get the symptoms of a cold, sneezing, coughing and other. The Word of God tells us that by the stripes of Jesus that we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5), these words are how we protect our bodies from this sickness. Speaking the Word over the matter is wearing the helmet and protecting yourself with the sword. Declaring you have a cold before you declare the Word of God means you are not wearing your helmet and protecting yourself. The Word of God is quick and powerful and it is our sword; it cuts away the malignancy of evil and all of its woes. It is astounding what the principles of the Word of God is doing within us. The Word of God can be likened to the scalpel of a surgeon, it meticulously removes error, deceptions, falsehoods and every type of toxic and contaminating soul activity.

We must take the time to intentionally clarify and define how we see the world, and to qualify being in it, and not of it. Then we will understand that we need our souls covered by the helmet. Failure to clarify, and define the relationship we have to the world is a liability, and not the asset of the power of wearing our helmets.

The question we need ask ourselves is, who and what created our world view, values and value operating system? Your values are what you stand for, because what you are willing to pay the price for can be formed by society, parents, culture, other peoples philosophies born out of their failures; by the world system that puts personal gain and ambition above everyone and everything else. God has shared with us His values; His righteousness, godliness, loving-kindness, mercy, grace and we must allow His attributes to pervade every aspect of our being. All of these characteristics and values have to protect our helmets.

We must intentionally define who or what informs our values. Out of our worldview the Bible is our source for faith and the rule of our conduct. The Bible informs us and gives us our values, and the helmet of salvation protects our value operating systems provided by the principles we attain from the Word of God.

Can you imagine a football player engaged in this game without his helmet. It would probably make you squirm to consider what would be the results of that. Not likely though, right!

You are not wrestling with flesh and blood

"For wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12 KJV).

That person you were angry at is not who you are in warfare with, it is the anger you felt which a principality assigned against you because you were not wearing your helmet to protect your mind and emotions; so that anger you felt empowered you with manevolence, and ill-will towards that person. Immediate forgiveness will always diffuse anger. Anger is not a fruit of the spirit, you wouldn't want to protect it but you would want to let it go, release it, and send it back where it came from. Anger is a dark emotion, it comes from the rulers of the darkness of this world and from spiritual wickedness in high places waiting to descend upon us when we fail to wear our helmets.

We have all heard people swear. or use what we call curse words at one time or another. What do these words really mean, they sound ridiculous. It is not really the words which are evil, it is the intent, emotion and anger. Angry people use foul language. Think about it for yourself.

We are admonished through Scripture not to allow corrupt communications to come out of our mouths. All words spoken from a manevolent heart are corrupt, because the emotion it represents is corrupt. We protect our souls when we remember what the Word of God is saying, because it is always speaking and telling us something to qualify our values are intact.

The helmet of salvation along with the Word of God protects every aspect of our souls. Without the covering of the Word of God we leave our entire soul system and every aspect open to the stimuli of darkness. The helmet of salvation protects our intellects and fills our minds with righteous thinking linked to the will and mind of God.

The Word is teaching us how to think like God and place value on this renewed thinking. The helmet of salvation protects your value system from corruption, contamination and conformity and it is aimed against valueless standards found in the world, by renewing our minds with principles that only the Word of God can provide for success; we are seated where God's potential and purposes are experiential. We have core values and purposes that the helmet shields with protection, so that we can experientially live out of our God inspired value system making it our spiritual values operating system. The helmet protects our operating systems from all danger and viruses.

God revealed and inspired all the core values we need to operate, and co-operate through our transformation process. Our souls needs protection from outside ideologies not found in the Word of God. There are principles which create and are influenced by principalities and powers that are not based upon the precepts of Godliness and Righteousness, we need to be wearing our helmets, so that these attacks are dwarfed; and our thoughts stay centered on God. There are rulers of the darkness of this world that we cannot see and do not want influencing our minds. There is spiritual wickedness in high and low places that we do not want to touch our souls. The helmet protects our thoughts from malice and malevolence. The armor is spiritual, it comes out of the spirit realm to provide us with protection.

The prosperous and successful life is dependent on a set of core values. Your values are what is important to you, what you stand for, what you are willing to die for, and what you are willing to pay the price for. Even when and if it means losing an opportunity because you refuse to compromise your values. Cover your values in the Word and protect your values by wearing your helmet to dwarf every fiery dart against your life. Declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, why, because I am wearing my helmet. There was blood shed for me to have the privilege to cover my mind with the Biblical principles found in the Word. Jesus Christ, Prophets and Apostles were crucified and murdered for us to put on the helmet of salvation.

A helmet is for protection of the head and ears. Without the right head protection, safety is threatened. Safety is a real issue of wearing a helmet. The helmet of salvation is more figurative and spiritual than physical. The ideal is the same, protection! We must protect our souls which house our minds, imaginations, wills, emotions, reasoning, consciences and memories; all of these are to be put under our helmets, which is our covering. By putting on and wearing the helmet of salvation we cover our souls under God's protection found in His Word and Spirit. Thank You Honorable and Holy Father for Your protective armor.
