The Incredible Story of God's Amazing Love - Chapter 1: The True Nature of God

Updated on March 15, 2010
God Loves Us!
God Loves Us!

A Father's Love Letter

King of Kings and Lord of Lords

How Great is Our God!

Holy is the Lord God Almighty

Who is God?

Is He a harsh and unforgiving taskmaster who makes us all suffer?

Or is He a loving and tender Father?

If we do not have an understanding of His true nature, which is gained by a knowledge of His actions throughout the history of this world, then we do not actually know who He really is.

Without this basic comprehension of God's character, we can understand neither His plan for humanity, nor the motives for his actions. If we only consider the terrible suffering and disasters that go on everywhere, without understanding His character in the historical context of His actions, we could erroneously come to believe that He is cruel, unfeeling, and arbitrary, and that He permits horrible things to happen needlessly. Satan would certainly prefer for us to think this way!

It has become more difficult to see God's character reflected in our surroundings, in these times we are now living in. It was much easier to see the proofs of His incomparable love and glory mirrored in our world before all creation was marred by the pollution and destruction caused by man's sinful selfishness and carelessness.

We can best determine the essentials of God's character by studying His words and actions. The Bible gives a full accounting of God's actions and interventions throughout the history of man, which we can study in depth. By a careful analysis of the Bible, we can learn about everything God has said and done since before the earth was created, and also read what He says about the period of time we are now actually living in.

After thoughtful study and consideration, we can then conclude with unerring certainty that God is:

1. The Supreme Authority and Ruler of the Universe

2. The Creator of all things

"By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him, for he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast". Psalms 33:6,8,9

3. Omnipotent (all-powerful)

"And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth".Rev 19:6

4. Omniscient (all-knowing)

5. Omnipresent (present everywhere)

6. Is our Father

"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Mat 5:47-48

7. God is love - and He loves us with a deep and everlasting love

"For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations".Psalm 100:4-5

8. God is light -

"God is light and in Him is no darkness at all".1 John 1:5

9. Righteous and just -

"For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loves righteousness and judgment; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord". Psalms 33:4.5

10. Merciful

"Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;" Deuteronomy 7:8-10

11. Forgiving

"The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him;" Daniel 9:8-10

12. Compassionate

"Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity."Joel 2:12-14

13. Patient

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."2 Peter 3:8-10

14. Endures forever

"But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations".Psalm 102:11-13

15. Is the defender of and a refuge for the poor, needy, the fatherless, the oppressed and the broken-hearted.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble". Psalm 46:1

"The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble".Psalms 9:9

"The poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless".Psalms 10:14

The worst result of sin is that we can no longer walk and talk with God face to face. Sin is a barrier that keeps us perpetuallly separated from Him, and this is our greatest loss. However, throughout the history of the world, God, in His immeasurable mercy and compassion, has constantly tried to communicate with us, and to save us from the results of our own rebellion.

The Bible is replete with recountings of the occasions when God intervened to attept to retrieve His children from the effects of sin, and to try to turn their hearts back to Him and His love. With unsurpassable pity and compassion, he repeatedly forgave them for their foolish sins, their ungratefulness, and even for their blatant rejection of His love. All He has ever wanted is for us to love Him and each other, to accept His love and mercy, and to allow Him to give us the gift of eternal life, so we can live with Him forever in glory and joy!

Because of His tremendous love for us, He sent us His own son Jesus, so save us from etrnal death. He does not want us to die. He wants us to live in the new, perfect world that will be recreated after Satan and his followers are finally judged and done away with forever. Jesus has forever conquered death for us. All we need to do is repent of our sins and accept His love, and His grace will do the rest. Jesus is the bridge between us and God. He is the only way to God, and is our only path to salvation. Because of the existence of sin in us now, the only way we can receive God's love and salvation is through Jesus Christ.

It is our choice - we can choose love and eternal life, or we can choose sin and eternal death.

Despite God's great love for us, He can not force us to think the way He wants us to think. We need to choose to accept love and eternal life based on our own inner conviction. Love can not be forced, but must be freely and willingly chosen. For God to force us to accept the gift of His love, would be to go against the precept of freedom of choice, which is a key part of the very foundation of His Kingdom of Love.

We can not choose love without a true affinity for love. If we do not love, then we are not God's true children, and we do not belong in God's kingdom, which is based on love. The source of love is God Himself, because God is Love. We receive this love by God's grace, through Jesus, by and through whom God does all things.

God has given you the freedom to make the choice. Which do you choose?

Life? Or death?
