The Lifespan of Man Part 1 Noah a Type of Christ
The Lifespan of Man -- Noah a Type of Christ Part 1
and other important things we must understand
I strongly recommend you read the story of Noah beginning in Genesis chapter 6 before beginning this study.
We must understand that when we look to scripture to find what applies to us, and what does not we must understand what age of man we live in if we are to find the correct answer for us in our age. Scripture tells us man is given 70 years of life then comes death. It also tells us some will live longer and some not the full term. We will look at the scriptures to see this truth explained.
There are many who are void of the Holy Spirit and therefore unable to correctly understand scripture, that teach incorrectly, that man is given a lifespan of 120 years. We will also explore this false doctrine and see what that term (120 years) is actually talking about in scripture.
Of course those that are true disciples of Christ, being filled with the Holy Spirit the only source of all truth , should already understand this.
Along they way during our journey to discover truth we will see evidence against other false doctrines that we will expose. So let us journey on and see what we find.
The source for the false doctrine saying man has a 120 year lifespan
First we must understand the context of the scriptures we will use.
Gen 6:1-2 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
The false 120 years doctrine (and a few more) comes from these scriptures being misunderstood.
First you must understand that the “sons of God” refers to those that were following God. The “daughters of men” refers to the daughters of the men who followed men and their evil ways. God has forbidden that His people marry anyone that was not also a child of God. Scripture tells us that by marrying outsiders you will be brought down, not bring them in and this is evidenced throughout the scriptures. So this disobedient act of the sons of God will surely lead to their downfall.
Gen 6:3-4 So the LORD said, "My Spirit won't remain with human beings forever, because they're truly mortal. Their days will be 120 years." 4The Nephilim were on the earth at that time (and also immediately afterward), when those divine beings (sons of God) were having sexual relations with those unGodly, earthborn women, who gave birth to children for them. These children became the heroes and legendary figures of ancient times.
God says He will not strive with man forever, He is sick of men perverting His way. Sound familiar? Here He is saying that the powerful men at that time were unGodly men and He was tired of dealing with them as they perverted even those that were Godly. By marrying the daughters of these apostate men the sons of God were learning their ways and following their wives not God, and their children, being influenced mostly by the mother, were being taught the evil ways, thereby all being perverted by their fathers disobedience to God. The word translated as giants is incorrectly translated. The word is “nephilim” and the correct translation of the word is earthborn meaning being born of earthly men not of Godly men, not giants in size but politically powerful, powerful in a worldly way, as are so many “leaders”in the world today.
So what God actually said above is “I will give man 120 years and if there is no change I will stop dealing with them and destroy them all.. Nothing to do with the lifespan of man.
Proof of this is that Noah lived to be almost 1000 years old.
Gen 9:28-29 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.
Gen 6:5-8 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the Lord said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. 9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
Next God has reached the limit of His patience and decided to destroy all mankind and every other living thing on the face of the earth because of the evil thoughts and ways of man. This greatly grieved Him, but it had to be done, He could not allow the creature created in HIS IMAGE to continue as evil beings.. But then, there in the midst of ALL the evil there was ONE MAN holding on to the ways of God, one lone man and God had to reconsider, He could not destroy one of His own sons.
God has a better way, one that allows Him to keep His only living son and his family
Gen 6:13-21 And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark — you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them."
But as usual, we find God has prepared a better way. He decides to destroy all of the living things on the earth that He has created except the ONE good seed, the only one that has remained faithful to Him.
Since He is going to allow man a second chance, and He finished creating things in the beginning, He also instructs Noah to bring along a seed pair of each other living creature that will be destroyed. Instead of removing Noah and his family from the earth, God does what is consistent with the way He protects those that belong to Him, He protects them in the middle of the calamity. Here we see God showing how wrong the false rapture doctrine is, totally against God's established manner of protection for His people.
Gen 6:22-7:6 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
Here we see again the faithfulness of Noah toward the Lord God. He DID ALL the Lord commanded him to do.
God's better way. He saves His one faithful man and his family alive in the flood
Gen 7:1-6 Then the Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2 You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3 also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made." 5 And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. 6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.
Because Noah was again faithful he will now be safe in the ark of God that He faithfully built according to God's detailed plan which He had given him. Notice Noah was given time to build the ark and then when it was time for the flood he was given time enough to do what was necessary to finish the task of preparing all that Gd had commanded. And once again Noah was faithful to do ALL the Lord had commanded him to do. Not 50%, not 75%, not even 95% but ALL that the Lord commanded him. Proof that to please God (or His Son who is Lord of this age) we must do ALL that we are commanded to do by the Lord of our age. Noah did his part and now God does His.
Gen 7:16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.
God's hand of protection was on Noah, God shut the door of the ark when all were safely inside. Now His son is safe, He can loose the killing flood to cleanse His earth.
Gen 8:14-19 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds and cattle and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth." 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him. 19 Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, and whatever creeps on the earth, according to their families, went out of the ark.
Be sure to read all the whole story. Now the flood is gone, the earth has been cleansed, all the unrighteous have been destroyed. Noah and his family are to replenish the earth and the animals are also to do their part. A clean fresh new start for the earth and all living creatures on it. Only the sons of God remain, they have inherited the earth, all others have been removed.
Gen 8:20-21 20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
Note the first thing Noah did when he was off the boat was to acknowledge and honor God for His protection during the cleansing of the earth.
God makes a covenant with Noah and every living thing that is to last for a specific time period
Gen 8:21-22 nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. 22 "While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease."
Note that God DID NOT SAY He would not destroy everything ever again. He said He would not destroy every living thing as He had done, With a flood. He also said that things will be as they were as long as the earth remains. Time period = as long as the earth remains. If you have read the end of the book as I have, then you know there is coming a time when this earth will disappear and a new one will arrive. So He promised to leave things as they are until the judgment, when He once again, “as in the days of Noah”, cleanses the earth of ALL unrighteourness, for the final time and His sons inherit the earth and eternity in the kingdom of God as scripture tells us, for eternity.
Gen 9:12-17 And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." 17 And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."
And to Remind us and Himself of this covenant He give us the rainbow when it rains so we do not have to be concerned that the end is near when it rains as We know He will never again destroy all living flesh on the earth with a flood. Notice He had not said He would never again destroy anything with a flood, but that He never again would destroy all living creatures with a flood.
Proof that the 120 years was the time given to man before the flood would kill all the unrighteous (those not belonging to God). In above verse 7:6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.. Then we see in 9:28-29 28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.
Definite proof that 120 years is not the lifespan of man, it was the time from when God decided He was going to have to destroy all mankind until He sent the flood on the earth to destroy all the unrighteous.
Noah lived 950 years not 120 years. And we see that many men lived way beyond 120 years even for hundreds of years further in the ages that followed.
The lifespan of man had not yet been limited.
Important things we learned in this article
- We see that God's patience with man does have limits and it is foolish to work against Him.
-
We find that another false doctrine of men has been exposed. The sons of men are not physical giants but political giants, heros, and leaders of the unrighteous, in other words powerful men in the ways of the world.
-
We also see proof that marrying someone that is not of God will bring you down, cause you to backslide and leave God.
-
Also we find God loves His people ( only those that fully follow Him according to His instructions are truly His people), so much that He did not destroy all mankind , but provided a way of safety through the calamity for him. Even when there was only one.
-
We also see proof that the lifespan of man was not limited at this time as some apostate men teach.
-
WE also see that Noah (who did all that God commanded) is in fact a type of Christ doing in the flesh what Jesus does in the Spirit. He, (the good seed) saved mankind from total destruction temporarily, but Christ, will save men (that do all that Jesus commands) from eternal destruction when God cleanses the earth for the last time, destroying all of the unrighteous at the Judgment seat.
-
God reminds us with a rainbow that He will never again destroy all living things with a flood.
-
One other thing we found was that God does not rapture His sons out of calamity, He protects them in and through it.
We will see in Part 2 that the life span of man for our age is 70 years and the exceptions allowed.
Remember do not believe what I or any other man try to teach you unless and until it has been confirmed as truth by scripture (not a bible) and the Holy Spirit.
May you be greatly blessed as you follow Christ into the kingdom of God.
