The plan of Salvation by Blood

Updated on September 26, 2015

Why the blood?

From the very beginning, even from Genesis, our God has been a God of sacrifice. In fact in the entire bible, especially in the old testament, we see numerous examples of sacrifice. When man sinned(disobeyed God) after being tricked by the serpent, then fear, shame death and so many evil consequences followed. Genesis 3:10 and forward.

God then clothed them with garments of animal skin . To do this, a sacrifice had to be made. An animal had to be killed for its skin to be used to cover their nakedness.

The lamb that was slain
The lamb that was slain | Source

We could also see throughout the old testament. For example, when God told Abraham to sacrifice his son beloved son, Isaac. A lamb was used as a replacement for the blood of Isaac but in the New Testament, God didn't spare his son Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins. Although it was the will of Jesus to be used as the perfect atonement for our sins.

There are a lot of examples I could use. When the law (10 commandments) were given and other Levitical laws was given, we see that God chose the blood as a propitiation of sins and had forbidden the eating of blood because he considered it sacred.

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

— Leviticus 17:11 NIV

This the major reasons why the Israelites sacrifice animals on the altar for atonement of sins. Not that it actually took away their sins but it was a constant reminder of their sins and a foreshadow of the true sacrifice to come in the person of Jesus Christ being crucified on the cross.

Blood, An atonement for sins
Blood, An atonement for sins

From here we see that the blood makes atonement for the soul. But if this is the case, why should we not be able to make atonement for our sins, the bible is clear on this. God requires a perfect sacrifice and because we are sinners, our blood has been contaminated and cannot be used for atonement of sins.

The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.

— Exodus 12:5 NIV

The purpose of the law

The law was given to show that no one is righteous before God and all have sinned.

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

— Romans 3:23

Since we have all sinned and are already condemned. Our fate is to be in hell but God in his mercy and love sent his son Jesus who was born of a virgin to die on the cross for our sins. He was sinless such that he was able to question his opponents, "Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?" (John 8:46).

Since Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, he showed that he was worthy by his lifestyle, sinlessness and his words. He also had miracles to show. He had the credentials to back up his claim. He even prophesied that he would be killed and rise up on the third day which he eventually fulfilled.

There are a lot of prophesies in the bible about the coming Christ who would die for our sins. Psalm 22 is an example as well as Isaiah 53. Psalm 23 was written at a time when crucifixion didn't even exist and yet Jesus fulfilled the prophecy.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

— Psalm 22:16-18

God's love

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (KJV)

God has shown us his love because even though we rebelled against him and disobeyed him and lived our own evil ways, he was still willing to go to he cross, suffer a brutal torment and finally execution. He had the chance to stop all these but he chose to suffer everything for our sakes so that anyone who believes in him will be saved because it is written that anyone who calls upon the name of the lord [Jesus] will be saved.

The time is short and no one knows when we die. No one has the key to death. Only Jesus has it. When you die do you want to go to an everlasting place of torment in the lake of fire after all Jesus Christ suffered on the cross so that you may be free or would you accept the sacrifice confess your sins and be saved.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

— John 3:16

Is there Hell or Heaven?

Yes, Heaven and hell is real. The one who came down from heaven told us that heaven and earth is real. If there is no heaven, then the chicken are far better than us human beings because when they die, we sweat and spend energy preparing dead chicken, we spend a lot of money and time queueing at fast foods like KFC, McDonalds, Nandos etc. How much more us who are made in the image and likeness of God.

Heaven and hell is real and please do not and I mean do not wait till you die before you find out because then, it will be too late. Eternity is a long time to be wrong.

I'm not writing this to scare you but to tell you the reality. Anyone who dies without Christ has lived a useless life because it will be better they were not born at all than enjoy life die and burn in the lake of fire for eternity. Jesus has paid the price for your sins so that you might become the righteousness of God. Don't overlook this free gift of salvation because it has a grave consequence.

How serious is hell?

When we are thirsty, we ask for a glass of water, some people a jug of water or even a barrel of water. Depends on how thirsty and heavy the drinker is but i have never met anyone who would ask for a drop of water when thirsty until i came across the rich man in the bible, he being a rich man on earth was begging for a finger tip of water. Imagine what a drop of water can do to a thirsty soul. That's the reality of hell. Don't let ignorance or arrogance cost you your free gift of salvation. Run to Jesus while he may be found. Don't wait till you die and it's too late.

Don't wait till the plane of salvation leaves the airport before you run to it. I tell you it will be too late by then just like it was too late in the times of Noah when Noah warned the people of his time and they didn't listen until the ark was shut and the flood began but by then it was too late. I tell you there will be great weeping and gnashing of teeth.

It is up to you

I once heard a story.

There was a wise man who said things that always come to pass. He went from village to village telling people about what will happen and it always ended up happening. He was to pass by a village on his way and a young boy wondered, "How is it possible that what this man says always come to be true. I will prove him wrong this time".

So he went and caught a butterfly and decided what he was going to do with it. He decided that he will put it between his fist and ask the man if the butterfly is dead or alive. If the wise man said it is dead, he would release the live butterfly to prove him wrong and if the wise man said it is alive, he would crush it and show that the butterfly is dead.

The day came and the boy asked as expected but the wise man paused for a moment and said, "It is up to you". It is up to you whether you choose eternal life or eternal condemnation.

What can I do to be saved?

If you have decided to give your life to Christ and avoid hell. You need to repent (turn away from your old evil ways), be sincere and pray a similar prayer as below. God is faithful, he will forgive you your sins and will begin a personal relationship with you. His holy spirit will come to indwell you and you will be directed by his spirit.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

— Revelation 3:20

Prayer

Here is how you can begin that relationship with him. Jesus said:

Right now you can invite Jesus Christ into your life. The words are not important. What matters is that you respond to him, in light of what he has done for you, and is now offering you. You could say to him something like, "Jesus, I believe in you. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I ask you to forgive me and to come into my life right now. I want to know you and follow you. Thank you for coming into my life and giving me a relationship with you, right now. Thank you."

      Jesus said:

Jesus said, "You judge by human standards; I judge no one." John 8:15

"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get." Matt. 7:1-2.

Do you believe what Jesus said?

Agreed but in this case, God is the creator and he can choose to pass judgement if he likes

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to GIVE HIS LIFE as a ransom for many."

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

Hebrew wasn't just written from a jewish perspective. If you read the whole chapter, it is really clear on mypoints.

Loving someone doesn't mean you shouldn't correct them. The fact that you love someone doesn't mean you should be silent when (s)he is cutting (him/her)self or going into great danger.

The old testament is a foreshadow of the true sacrifice to come which is in Jesus.

I believe Hebrews was written from a Jewish viewpoint. I am not Jewish.

Jesus did not teach this. Jesus taught to love one another including your enemies. Jesus said he judged no one... no one at all. No condemnation. Jesus was Not Jewish by teaching. Linage has nothing to do with spirituality. Jesus did not teach sacrifice.

There is no need to be mad here as you mentioned and I agree. And i'm not denying that there is history of bloodshed in the bible, all i'm saying is that there is a reason and perhaps you only googled for the attrocities without understanding the reason behind it. In conclusion

Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Read Hebrews 9. It sheds more light to this topic

"Can you show your proof of all the comments you just made because I realize you don't understand the old testament neither have you read about 50 percent of it but you just point out the supposed violence without knowing the core meaning it portrays."

Please do not get mad, this is supposed to be an enlightening discussion. It is important to state your assumptions so they can be analyzed. Yes, I have read the entire OT, NT and The Qur'an and Bhagavad-Gita, etc.

Simply put, violence done to another human being is wrong. Agreed?

Goggle "Bible Atrocities" or "Atrocities in the Bible" for a list of OT violence.

Keep in mind, the Hebrews and Canaanites were related, interbred since the time of Abraham. What the Hebrews did to the Canaanites, they did to themselves. Violence does not justify violence. That is payback, retaliation or vengeance; all wrong. We are all one Whole.

Your assumption is wrong, I am a Christian.

Can you show your proof of all the comments you just made because I realize you don't understand the old testament neither have you read about 50 percent of it but you just point out the supposed violence without knowing the core meaning it portrays.

Did you ever read that God said the people living in the land of Canaan at the time were really corrupt, did abominations, made their sons pass through fire, and etc. We know even from the new testament that the wages of sin is death. That was what really happened . To cut the story short, i wil advise you to read the old testament yourself without picking verses out of context to prove the old testament is wrong.

The Rabbis wrote a political statement to justify taking land which did not belong to them and using force to get it. The assumption that God chose Israel is false. The assumption God made a covenant with Israel is false. God does not parcel out land and then condone killing for it. The violence of the Hebrews proves their assumptions are false. If you adopt these assumptions you are Jewish.

Jesus debunked what the Rabbis taught, that is why the Rabbis wanted to kill him... even early on. Read the red letters of a Red Letter Edition to approximate what Jesus said: love one another, love (not kill) your enemy, judge not, condemn not, heal with forgiveness, etc.

Jesus resurrected (a Near Death Experience) to prove an afterlife actually exists. He could not come back from nothing. A place or condition must first exist before there can be a return. His death was for the resurrection, it was Not a sacrifice.

Study IANDs website, search for "vertical" NDEs. NDEs are a resurrection and proof of an afterlife.

Hi brother. It's good to hear from you again after a really long time. Hope all is well.

Nature itself requires sacrifice. Something has to die for us to live. A Chicken has to die before we could eat it. If this is a physical source that add life, then how much more the life from the spirit through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross

I understand your point. The bible (the written word of God) is a collection of books (not just the new testament). It contains history, prophesies about things to come, as well as a foreshadow and pointing of Jesus. If you throw the old testament away because of the history of bloodshed (without first understanding and fully reading it to know the reasons why) then you wouldn't fully grasp the concept of salvation.

However, it is true that the old laws has been done away after the new covenant has been sealed with the blood of Jesus and we now live under grace and not the law. I only made reference to the old testament for those who would understand.

Yes, life itself requires so much sacrifice. Our Christianity says that it is the way of the Cross. Yes, so happy that you included God's Love. It is always available and waiting, even now ...

I know that beautiful story. You've added embellishments, but that's cool. Good to see you back, Bro. Much Love.

Please understand I am Christian and Not Jewish. I follow what Jesus said, Not the OT Rabbis. I simply renounce the violence of the OT in favor of the Peace offered by Jesus. God is Not schizophrenic. God does not lash out in violence.

The Bible consists of many books by many authors spanning hundreds of years. The OT depiction of God as a vengeful killer is primitive. It is a projection of primitive people. I am asking you to renounce the primitive and adopt the more recent teachings of Jesus. The OT & NT depictions of God contradict. Any depiction of God as violent or requiring sacrifice is blasphemy. Now do you understand?

It is OK ....... you still have Jesus. Focus on Him.

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21). The Rabbis were inspired to pen down the scripture. Example:

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel (Exodus 34:27)

Just after John 8:15. Jesus says: "And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me." John 8:16

If forgiveness didn't require a sacrifice, then Jesus died in vain. It was for this very reason of atonement of sins that Jesus came into the world.

Forgiveness of sins require a sacrifice.

      ==============================

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21

Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes HIS LIFE AN OFFERING FOR SIN, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. Isaiah 53:10

If God doesn't punish sins, then there is no reason for heaven or hell or whether sin is okay or not. God is a judge and we have to be accountable for our sins. You cant commit mass crimes and not expect to stand before a judge on earth. How much more in heaven.

Say you broke my bulb, to forgive you, I wouldn't tell you to repay me, I would of my own self take money out of my own pocket to buy another bulb. Something has to be taken away from me in order to replace the broken bulb.

thanks. There are of course deep psychological and social aspects to blood symbolism that would take an encyclopedia to describe.

I believe the blood sacrifice symbols were also prophetic in the sense that over a 1000 years later this symbol was rapidly accepted by all indigenous cultures who all had such symbols as a crucial aspect to their religion. This made it easy for them to incorporate JCs message.

God does not condemn, but heals with forgiveness. The Old Testament (OT) was written by Rabbis who teach of (1) Gods’ judgment and (2) a remitting sacrifice. Both of these theories are wrong.

The Father ran to the prodigal son while still far off, Luke 15:11

The Father always welcomes you, He does not condemn.

      (1) Jesus did not condemn.

Refer to the teachings of Jesus in the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) and the Adulteress (John 8:4-11). In neither story did the father (or Jesus) condemn the person. He did Not judge.

Jesus said, "You judge by human standards; I judge no one." John 8:15

"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get." Matt. 7:1-2.

      (2) Sacrifice has never removed sin. Forgiveness removes sin.

You fail to realize the Rabbis who wrote the old testament was inspired by the Holy spirit as well as the new testament writers. And besides, the Christians you just mentioned that wrote the new testament were Jews and were only called Christians after the death of Jesus Christ. God doesn't change his character and since he is a Judge, he has to punish evil. We see in the old testament that he is slow to anger and merciful. He treats Israel like a father would treat his son and for the wrath path, i already mentioned he has to punish evil and the case of evil doers must have been so worse that he had to pronounce judgement. Yet his mercy and compassion was shown in that he died for sinners.

"You can't throw away the Old Testament. It is the rock on which the New Testament stands."

The OT was written by Rabbis and therefore is Jewish. The NT was written (mostly) by Christians. The OT and NT are contradictory. Think about it.

The OT depicts God as a jealous, vengeful, killer whereas the NT depicts God as healing people. Jesus healed with forgiveness. Jesus did not take up a sword and harm anyone, ever. The OT depicts God as a God of War whereas the NT depicts God as a God of Peace.

I am Christian because I believe in a God of Peace.

I think Abortion means Abortion and God commanded us not to kill. At least I know that the purpose of abortion is to prevent a baby from being given birth to. It's is a way of preventing the end result.

God commands "You shall not kill". So I think that is enough for me. I don't know about you.

You can't throw away the Old Testament. It is the rock on which the New Testament stands. The Old Testament is a foreshadow of the New Testament. It is true we have to forgive each other but that's for people-people relationship. Sacrifice is needed to restore the relationship with God and it is only possible through the blood of Jesus. It has been done, what's left is repentance and salvation

I have a question regarding "life in the blood" Lev. 17 then Prov. 14:30 states, "sound heart..." I get it. Blood, heart, heart and blood seem to be scriptural definitions of life. Therefore, why do pro-lifers insist on a "life" definition as at "conception?" Where in the Bible does it say that? If not, why not advocate for fetus abortion anytime for any reason before the heart begins pumping blood in the fetus. If the heart/blood definition is scripture, is not the growth in the womb just that? a growth and nothing more....according to scripture? That would make Planned Parenthood and the morning after pill real helps for women in real need!

Article: "From the very beginning, even from Genesis, our God has been a God of sacrifice. In fact in the entire bible, especially in the old testament, we see numerous examples of sacrifice."

Please, please, get over the Old Testament (OT). No sacrifice has ever removed any sin. Sin is in the mind in the form of negative emotions (hatred, fear, anger, etc.) In order to remove sin, learn to forgive the person associated with the negative emotion.

Grow and mature. Renounce the OT concept of sacrifice. Accept what Jesus said, forgive to be forgiven. Condemn not.

@Oztinato Yeah, it was self sacrifice but it was necessary that I include this because some people do not know the link between why Jesus had to die and the old testament atonement of sins. Although you are right in some way and I guess not everyone would understand atonement for sins by blood

When the NT was being formulated it was necessary to make sense out of what happened. The initial momentum was Jewish therefore traditional ideas of animal sacrifice were included. The Greek and Roman influences also influenced views of appeals to the new stronger "gentile" influences. The main thing was to get JCs fresh philosophy out and this was the message of love. It was inevitable that His message was phrased with the minds and attitudes of the majority religious influences of the time with quite a few general middle eastern concepts as well. Hence today such ideas of blood atonement make very little sense to modern minds. Unless we read between the lines we could miss the message of love which many atheists do. In fairness to them if we persist in focusing on ancient blood atonements the confusion will persist. In our modern view it is far better to say that JC elevated the old ideas of blood sacrifice into self sacrifice.
