There is Some Great Music Out There

Updated on January 13, 2017

Kathleen Cochran is a writer & former newspaper reporter/editor who traveled the world as a soldier's better half. Her works are on Amazon.

And it's just a click away:

Some days are good.

Some days - not so good.

But on any given day a lift to your spirit is just a click away. For all the good, the bad, and the ugly that the Internet has brought into our lives, there are some things available to us now that are not more than a keystroke away. Inspirational, just what we need at any moment, music is virtually at our fingertips.

As Emerson, Lake and Palmer so eloquently said, "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends." Ladies and Gentlemen, - with apologies to ELP -Toby Mac:

Life is hard and then you die:

Well, yes, that is one way to look at life. Like the wise man said, some days you are the hammer and some days you are the nail. If our friend Murphy can be believed, if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong. Many people believe Murphy had to be an optimist. "What do you mean 'IF' anything can go wrong!"

We've all been there. Those days when it just wasn't worth it to get out of bed. They come to all of us (some more than others). When they come to me, I don't know of a better defensive strategy for overcoming them than to turn on the nearest radio, CD player, or computer to arm myself against of all that beseiges me in the ongoing battle of daily life.

What's Next?

I don't know about my fellow hubbers out there, but I've come to the point in life that I'd really just as soon not see too far down that road, around that next bend, or too far over the distant horizon. Life is too full of surprises for me to want to know exactly what is coming next.

But for right now. For this moment. I'll take all the encouragement music affords us. I can't think of another thing in life that offers me the opportunity to just feel better by doing nothing more than lending an ear to what it has to offer. And there are certain songs that speak to us no matter what our nationality, religion, ethnicity, or any other defining feature of life. They reach across any divide and touch us where we live and breathe and have our being.

Does music have to be religious to be uplifting? No.

Whether or not you are a person of faith, especially in the traditional sense, religious music can boost your spirits, change your mood, and help you through the tough patches. But does music have to be something you might hear in church to be inspirational? I don't believe it does. There are many feel good tunes on the airways. You know them when you hear them by the way they set your toe to tapping and put a smile on your face. And many of them are the hits of today.

I agree totally, Kathleen! It's amazing what music does for us. I can hear a song and remember exactly what I was doing when that song came out, as far back as the 60's. Music imprints on our minds the highs and lows of life, and it also has the ability to suspend time and allow us to just be.

Music can be such a mood-changer, and happy music is definitely what one needs when feeling "down and troubled."

It takes more than one song for me when my mood dips...ha! I have three old albums--greatest hits--of the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers and Journey. I'll put the CD player on "Repeat" and play them over and over, then, when my mood lifts, top it all off with the magnificent voice of Aaron Neville.

I've got every kind of music in my collection from classic rock to pop to classical (orchestral, piano or the famous tenors) to jazz to blues (the latter of which I stay away from when that's my mood) to doo-wop to Broadway musicals to Gregorian chants to ...well, you name it, and unless it's rap or hip-hop (my musical palette is rap and hip-hop challenged), I've got it ready to play. No matter what my mood, there's a CD to either improve or enhance it.

      To wondrous music!

torrilyn: You are so right about the opposite effect negative music can have on us. Welcome to my hubs.

Jaye: Great choices for our generation. Uplifting music comes in every genre and every decade. Love much of the music I hear on TV and the radio today, though I'd be hard pressed to name the artists!

One of my favorite songs to improve my mood is a song about what to do when your feelin' down. It's an old song by Elvin Bishop called "Rock My Soul." I hope you don't mind, but I'm putting a link to it on YouTube just because a lot of people may not know/remember it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4cNJ2W2_-Q
