Time - our most valuable commodity and what it means to us in life

We all want to achieve things in our lives. We hare human. But how much Time do we have to achieve those goals, and those dreams? How many years do we have left? How far have we come – and how near to those goals are we now? I have a friend, and he is short on time. Life has been too short for him to find all the amazing things in life he was meant to find, and things to accomplish. It’s amazing how that short time makes us cherish time even more. SO much poetry and music has been composed about this amazing thing we even have nick-named “Father Time”. Time seems plentiful till suddenly there is not enough of it, and then we are rushing to get everything finished before time runs out.

How many years do we have left on this planet? How many Decembers are left for each of us? Time is of the essence. The window of opportunity does not remain open forever. We all have just a finite amount of time to get or find all the things we desire. Our philosophy sometimes seems to blind us from finding this.

We have only a certain amount of time to grow, to get our education. Only a certain amount of time to fall in love – and maybe find that special person we have all been looking for. Only so much time is left for us to make that pile of money we always dreamed of, or find that formula for financial success. We have only so much time to visit all those magical far off places we have dreamed of visiting. We all take advantage of the time we live in. And we have to be as Tough as the times we live in. And most of all, we have to make the Time. Because time is short. And Time is Valuable.

We are supposed to get work by a certain time, have babies by a certain time (for women anyway) – that’s if we are so inclined to want babies…or raise the families we are planning (if that is our plan). We also have to pay off those bills, those loans and mortgages by a certain time. We also want to solve those problems we may have or obstacles we may have stopped at or got stuck at. Some world leaders have so much time to get their lists of “things to do” actually done. Remember the time we were studying and cramming for those school exams and how we were rushing to finish our exam papers on time? Maybe there is someone we know we need to say things to, to make peace with, to settle matters and close things and tidy up friendship matters. A person we need to say Sorry to, perhaps? Time can be our friend, and then at other times it runs against us.

Time is a Mystery and so beautiful when it gives itself to us, it almost has human qualities and we mourn when it vanishes or is taken away. It is so easy to lose track, and miss-manage our most valuable resource. We live by its rules and sometimes live in ignorance of the shortness of time. When we lose time, it’s funny how we never get it back, and we spend our lives wishing what might have been. Let’s learn again what time means to all of us. It is unique, it is a genie that grants us a wish the moment we are born, but we never know it. Time can be there in front of you like a scene or a beautiful sunset. Or it can be found in the sunrise. Maybe it’s a sign of a higher power or a kind of spirituality at work, and we are blissfully unaware. We are babes in Time's Playground. And we all wish it would last longer…

Hey Nell, nice comment. We do trudge through life, and we can often be blind to what we need to be doing, given the time we have. Maybe we will always underrate the value of time. I found this a great topic to write about. Dang, maybe I'm getting old! Those mid 20's looking more like late 20's now! :)

Thanks for the vote up, Nell. Have a good one!

Hy _cheryl_: Thankyou for this interesting point you make. Yes, Time is fleeting, and that clock ticks the seconds by, and turn into minutes then hours, days, weeks...

Pretty soon ya think, gee - where did time go? I'm 25. You'd think I'd find something better to yak on about. But it just gets me right there, that I am so ignorant of the things I could have been doing with my time - if I had managed it better...

Yes, time is precious. I like your quote by Will Rogers. I'll note that in my journal. Thanks for this. : )

Very thoughtful hub, makes me stop to think about how I'm managing my own. I'd like to say that I make the time to stop every once in a while to just reflect and appreciate things. I like how you mention that "we have to make the time". You so tell it like it is! We have to initiate and take action in our lives so as not to be a slave to time. It's important to realize how precious it is. "Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save."-Will Rogers =)

@Prettydarkhorse: I have to check my music here. H'mm, interesting lyrics! I hope so too, Maita. Time is brief, so we should make the most of it! Cheers, always great getting your comments! : )

@tonymac04: Wow, TS Eliot was a genius! How right you are. Thanks for that, just like what Maita said there - time does make us become more introspective, doesn't it!

"And indeed there will be time." Eliot captured the essence of time so well in many of his poems. Thanks for sharing your thougts on it too.

@ Susana S: Hy Susana - thankyou for this! I guess it was the frame of mind I was in as I wrote it. It just pours out that way. You know me! LOL!

@ Putz Ballard: Hy Putz! I never get enough visits from you, my friend but it's lovely to see this today! Yes, Time sure is fleeting, and I agree! Every day and every moment is a blessing. Cheers! You take care and visit often! Thankyou!

This is a very beautiful hub Cheeky - you have captured the human experience of time perfectly in your words and it feels almost poetic or maybe beyond poetic. Thank you :)

Hy ripplemaker: You are a ray of light, my friend! I want to cherish that Time for as long as possible. It was a friend that inspired me here, I admit. That and one or two other things, perhaps. I understand the "wanting" thing a lot. Yes, thankyou for this, and may your year bring you all the things you wish in life. Your blessings mean a lot to me! : )

Hy TattoGuy: I'm touched by these sentiments. Right now, it seems so plentiful, but it's an illusion in a way. My Grandmother always says Youth is wasted on the young. LOL! Maybe this will appease her a bit! Heh! Oh, by all means, do write your poem! I will check it out and I love reading poetry. I love your poems as Cabin Girl! YOu have a wonderful day too, my Big Tattooed friend! *chuckles here* Cath says "hy Capn" too! *Big hugs for you*

I love this Cassy and time is something I always think about and how quickly it passes by. How special people drift in and out of our lives but as you say time should be cherished. I might actually write a Poem called " Time", as CabinGirl of course.

Really beautiful hub, it was in fact almost like a poem itself, enjoy yer Sunday my special lil friend !!

Time is indeed very valuable to us. We speak about it a lot --whether having the lack of it and wanting to have more to do our thing; or having lots of time on our hands and being bored not knowing what do do! Happy is the man who finds time to be on his side and living in the now! LOL

Happy new year Cheeky Girl...may you have all the time in the world to do all the things you love to do! Blessings!
