Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Updated on November 27, 2008

It was in 1910 that Waverly Hills Sanatorium opened as a two story hospital to accommodate tuberculosis patients. It has been popularized on TV as one of the most haunted places in the United States. Fox TV recently said it is one of the scariest places on earth. Some people claim that as many as 63.000 persons died at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium so its easy to understand why there are said to be so many ghosts at Waverly Hills Sanatorium.

Many ghosts are said to still haunt the place including the ghost of a man and his dog and a woman who's ghost is said to be seen running out the front door in a gown bleeding and begging for help. She vanishes if anyone does try to approach her to help. A nurse is said to be trapped forever on the buildings 2nd floor. Even today she comes up and tries to order people out of the building. She is often seen setting in a small office at the top of the stairs. When people try to go into the room to ask her questions she either orders them out of the building or she simply vanishes.

In the tunnel where bodies used to be stored is the place where the most evil things are said to dwell. It is here that a actual demon is said to reside. Strange looking pig tracks are often seen in this area and people claim to see a set of fire red eyes looking at them. A Catholic Priest who was asked to bless this area ran from the area and is said to have had a bad bite mark on his inner thigh. He refused to return to the area to finish his blessing and he said that their was something evil there.

All kinds of Ghost Hunters have investigated the Waverly Hills Sanatorium and they all agree that the place is one of the most haunted places in the United States. Many have tried to spend the night in the place only to run out in the night. Why are the ghosts so active here. Some people have theorized that there is a open gateway here that lets the ghosts and other evil spirits cross back and forth between the worlds of reality and the spirit world. They say so many people died here who were evil that the gateway was opened.

Just in front of the building a ghost of a young woman in a wedding dress is often seen. The story goes that she was a nurse that received word that her husband who was a soldier had been killed in war. When she heard the news she put on her wedding dress and jumped from the top of the building to her death. She is often seen setting or standing near the front of the building. She often is crying and people will try to walk up to her only to have her vanish.

There is even the ghost of a large black dog on the property. It will be standing growling at you and its eyes glow bright red. Some people think it is the dogs eyes that people see in the tunnel. Some people think that the dog is not the ghost of a dog at all but some type of evil spirit appearing as a dog.

I actually have a picture from Waverly that describes a woman in a wedding dress. Myself and a group of friends visited Waverly in October 2009 for the Haunted House and I captured the picture outside I believe it is the back side of the hosptial. I was fasinated because I did not know what it was until you mentioned a woman in a wedding dress because that is the first time I heard that.

I am extremely interested in one day investigating Waverly Hills. So many stories and accounts circulate about this site that it's almost impossible for it NOT to have some sort of paranormal activity occurring there.

I read this after your hub on graveyards. This stuff was alway fascinating to me as I grew up next door to the city cemetery, and so the topic of paranormal things would come up with my siblings often.
