What are the most important lessons that you learned in your life?

Updated on May 21, 2009

Lessons Worth Remembering

The first of the great lessons that have left a lasting impression in my life is that life is temporary. It is one thing to hear the words "life is temporary", internalizing that fact and accepting that it applies to all including yourself is a different story. The rich, poor, educated, ignorant, beautiful, unattractive, hard working, lazy, all races of people, all cultures, everyone who lives will eventually leave this world. Watching people work so hard to prolong a temporary life is a both perplexing and understandable. This does not mean that I am not happy to be alive, just the opposite, this means I know I have to value every moment that there is breath and strenght in this frame of mine.

I learned that we "all living beings" are connected as journey beings in this existence, whether we like or not, whether we want to believe it or not that is a fact. I am always amazed when people tell me how "lonely" they are with seven billion people on this planet. Our basic needs and our external environment connects us, despite who we believe our selves to be in this world. Among human beings, I have been taught that there are six opulences, Renunciation, Intelligence, Beauty, Wealth, Strength, and Fame. The majority of people I meet would love to be number one in all six categories. These feature attract us to each other and have influence on our relationships. The most attractive person is a person endowed with these features. We possess them in different quantities and that is one attribute that make all humans unique and special.

I have learned that in this world true friendships are the most valuable things a person could have in this life. A true friend is there when no one else wants to be there and will do their best to keep you out of harms way. A true friend comforts and remind you that you are never alone, their presence establishes that fact.

I have learned about the laws of Karma and the laws of cause and effect. The fact that for every action there is a reaction make me pay particular attention to what I am doing at every given moment. I learned that the reaction to an action may come immediately. For example if you bang you had it hurt right away. I also learned that the reaction to an action may be delayed. For example, if you keep writing and keep writing then one day you will realize you have enough material to write a good book.

The final note on what I learned that is important to internalize is that a person may never know everything. Recognizing that there is infinite knowledge in the universe and the human race may never get all the answers, reinforces the fact that this existence is great with infinite possibilities. There is more beyond this physical reality and we will not know what that is until we get there to find out. Therefore, it is wise to live in the present and utilize the opulences/resources that we have been given to the best of our ability to make a wonderful life in this world and the next.

Thank you for your time.
