What is God's True Name?

Updated on August 7, 2009

Did you realize God has a personal name? Like your name may be Kendra, my cat's name is Snowy and my grandmother's Irene... God, too, has a name we can call him! God's true, personal name is Jehovah. Proof of that fact can be found in your bible at Psalm 83:18, which reads, "You (speaking of God) whose name is Jehovah..." Many people don't even know this truth. I know, I didn't. Many people I know didn't, either. The fact is, someone had to teach it to me... the same way our mothers and grandmothers taught us how to cook, or to garden or to sew.

I grew up a Catholic, so I never heard the name Jehovah before. I heard things like God, Father, Lord and other titles. Many people get TITLES confused with NAMES. God is not a name. Father is not a name. Lord is not a name. If one of my teachers, in elementary school, asked me my father's name, I wouldn't say, "Father." I would say, "Robert." That is, because... my father was given a personal name, and father is the title given for the role he plays in mine and my brother's lives. The same goes for the title, God. God is what our creater is, but it is not a personal name. In the same way we may call our earthly father, father, we can also call God, God. God has a name, though, and it is very important that we use that name. Why? Well... would you want someone to constantly refer to you as "mother," or "aunt?" I wouldn't. I would much prefer, out of respect for me and my personal name, they use the name I was given.

Many people say we shouldn't degrade God's name by using it whenever we feel like it. If we were not meant to use God's name, don't you think he would've told us that... maybe, through his word, the bible? There are many less important admonitions in the bible. Why not this one? In general... if names were not meant to be utilized, why name a baby in the first place? Just, to have a name? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. When it comes to the bible, many people don't think with common sense. They think, purely, with their hearts... and, that's o.k. However... we must, too, be able to look at these things logically. The bible proves that God is a very logical and organized father. Afterall, we were made in his image. If we weren't to use our abilities and our senses to the full, I don't believe we would be as intricately designed as we are.

People who call themselves christians... it's time to stand up and ask questions of the people who "teach" us religious things. If it doesn't make sense, there's usually a good reason why! God IS love, and you can find that in your bible, as well. If God is love, then... do you think it makes sense for him to want to mislead us or lie to us, in any way? Of course not! God is a loving god... to be honored and feared. God is not trying to trick his people into thinking dozens of different biblical teachings. On the contrary, he wants us to be smart enough and motivated enough to educate ourselves, through the pages of his word... not relying on other people to "teach" us things that we will rotely believe. This is not the way God wants it. On the other hand, there is someone whose very interest it is to confuse and mislead us. That person is, none other than, Satan the Devil.

If you are aware of the story of Satan, you will know... he has every reason to want to anger God and malign his good name. Satan sought God's position in heaven, because he was not satisfied being God's angel. He greedily desired more. If that wasn't enough, Satan began to recruit other angels who felt the way he did, about God and his position. So... Satan and these angels were cast out of heaven, down to the earth... where they have been roaming ever since. They are here doing the best they know how (and, booooy, do they know how!) to create chaos, misinformation and lies about God and his people. This is one, huge reason why people are so confused about things today... especially, regarding religion.

God wants us to seek the truth, but we have to be willing and open enough to do that, and to realize, that... the REAL truth may not be something we've always known, or accepted. You have to be open to GOD'S truth, and then you will be ready and willing to find it.

I think back on a time when I didn't know half of what I do now, about Jehovah God and his teachings. How misinformed and misguided I was! Now that I know the truths, though, I can tell you... it's like a bright light has been switched on! Talk about enlightening!!! Living, for so many years, in complete and utter, spiritual darkness... I thank God each and every day he sought me out to love, to mold and to teach everything he wants us all to learn. How blessed we are to have such a loving and gracious, heavenly father.

Thank you, Jehovah God! I'm so glad I've gotten to really KNOW you!!!

Shalawam (peace). I just wanted to make a few points in response to this article. As Debra Sexton mentioned, the tetragrammaton(Hebrew 4 letters) for the Father's name is YHWH, not YHVH, as someone mentioned earlier. As there are no Js in the Hebrew language, there are no Vs as well. The pronunciation of the Father's name is in the Hebrew letters themselves, vowels and all. Yad (pronounced Yod), Hay, Waw, Hay or YaHaWaH. The father left His name, being all knowing, for us to still worship Him inspite of the enemy trying to take away His set apart name. HalleluYah in Hebrew means praise you Yah. In regards to the name Yahweh, the Greeks changed the ending from "ah" to "eh" bc in the Greek language, anything ending in ah was feminime, anything ending in eh was masculine. This was their linguistics law. You can study this very easily. Another thing I want to mention is that Yahawah is only Elohim( Hebrew for authority, power). He is not what we call him, God, for there were many gods (ie. Sun God, moon God, etc.). What people do not realize is many of the English translations do not have the same meaning in Hebrew or can't be translated into Hebrew, so man has put in his own translations of the word of Yah, what he wants it to say or mean, which Yahawah forbids us to do. The only way is to turn away from ALL organized religion, repent and seek the father in truth and in spirit. He is our only teacher.

Earl... Thank you for commenting, but with all due respect, much of the information you've given is eithher inaccurate/or highly distorted. I'm not sure what bible translation you are using, but it seems to have some confusing information. Most times, people read the bible and take what they want from its information... instead of reading all of Jehovah God's word as it is written and meant to be interpreted. I see a lot of that in Christendom today. Jah's word is accurate, it's matter-of-fact and is NOT CONFUSING OR DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND. Furthermore... a person cannot, in TRUTH, take Jehovah's word, read it scripture by scripture, then believe they've accurately comprehended/now understand all there is to know. His word is simple, however... @Deborah Sexton... you have a portion of the research you've done, regarding Jehovah b youthere is much entailed within it.

In Psalm 83:18 The Jewish Bible says:

18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is YHWH, the most high God over all the earth.

It doesn’t say Jehovah, that is only in the English Bible.

There isn’t a letter or sound of “J” in the Greek or Hebrew Alphabet. It’s unclear about when the initial and exact time the letter ‘J’ sound came into existence in the English language, the window is sometime between the 1500-1600s. This current modern translation of what the world uses… the name Jesus, did not exist until give or take, 500 years ago.

Jehovah is an incorrect transliteration of YHVH. Jehovah is not a Hebrew name.

God’s name is Yah taken from YHVH

Yah is God’s name and it is strongly expressed in Psalms 68:4

“Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name Jah, and rejoice before him”

This is the only place in the English Bible that clearly states God’s name. It has been transliterated as “J” but in Hebrew there is no letter or sound of "J". Yah appears 50 times in the Jewish Bible.

Jesus’ name was Yahshua and contains God’s name Yah

      John 5:43

      I am come in my Father's name,….

In John 10:25 Yahshua states that the works he did was in the Father’s name and in John 17:6 when he was talking to Yah he told Him that he had manifested his name.

      John 17:6

"I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world..."

A Hebrew translation restores the Name of the Almighty to its rightful place. It affirms the Hebraic roots by the use of Hebraic forms of certain words and titles that was current at the time of our Messiah. Restores the meaning to so many words which have become popular to use, but do not accurately reflect the meaning of the original. Seeks to be as far as possible a “literal” translation.

In behalf of Maestro Erano Evangelista of

May you read this message for your group to know the true name of God in the Bible and His real Message for our time.

In our present generation, for us to know that this is the time of trouble, where will it start?

      In Jeremiah 25:29-38.

'See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.'

      Jeremiah 25:29 (NIV).

God said he will start to bring disaster on "the city that bears my Name" - What is this city that bears His Name?

18 Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”.

      Daniel 9:18-19 (NIV).

And in 2 Chronicles 7:12-14 (NIV)

12 the Lord appeared to him at night and said:

“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.

13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Who are the People of God in the Bible?

22 “How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. 23 And who is like your people Israel —the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, Lord, have become their God.

2 Samuel 7:22-24 New International Version (NIV)

The people of God are called Israel.

If the people of God are called Israel, and the People of Israel are called by the Name of God, (Dan.9:18-19 & 2 Chr.7:12-14), what is the Name of God?

The Name of God is ISRAEL ! Our God is LORD GOD ISRAEL!

      Let us read Jer.25:29

'See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.'

      Jeremiah 25:29 (NIV).

God will bring disaster on the city that bears His Name which means God will bring disaster on the nation of Israel and "all who live on the earth" (Jer.25:29)- together with all the people of the world, no one will be spared from the judgment of God.

If God would punish the people of Israel who are even called By His Name, how much more those who are not?

Why would God bring such disaster on the city that bears His Name and a sword to all who live upon the earth?

      Deuteronomy 11:26-28 (NIV)

26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse — 27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known.

Maestro Evangelista says that the reasons the disasters, wars, famine and other calamities that happened and experiencing at present is that we never obeyed the commandments of God and never knew His Great Name. To end the curse in the world, we should seek and know His Great Name and call out the Name. By doing this we can be called by God as His people and have peace and prosperity.

Let us now read again Jeremiah 25: 30 to 31

"Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them: " 'The LORD will roar from on high; he will thunder from his holy dwelling and roar mightily against his land. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, shout against all who live on the earth. The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD will bring charges against the nations; he will bring judgment on all mankind and put the wicked to the sword,' " declares the LORD.

      Jeremiah 25:30-31 (NIV).

When the people are bad, they will be punished with wars and killings.

This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Look! Disaster is spreading. from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth."

      Jeremiah 25:32 (NIV).

We have experienced the violent storms, even the change in climate around the world, which has not been experienced before. We hear and see these things as they are happening through the news on Cable or Satellite TV broadcasts.

If not natural calamities, they will be subject to other disasters, famine and plagues.

At that time those slain by the LORD will be everywhere - from one

end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like refuse lying on the ground.

      Jeremiah 25:33 (NIV).

With the great number of the dead, they will be left unburied. We should avoid this; the leaders should talk it over to acknowledge, repent, and return to God.

      If we will not --

Weep and wail, you shepherds; roll in the dust,

you leaders of the flock. For your time to be slaughtered

has come; you will fall and be shattered like fine pottery.

      Jeremiah 25:34 (NIV).

Even the religions will bear God's wrath. The leaders of the religions will be questioned by the people because of the great deception that they have done to all the people of the world.

Will the leaders of the religions escape the wrath of God?

The shepherds will have nowhere to flee, the leaders of the flock no place to escape. Hear the cry of the shepherds, the wailing of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture.

      Jeremiah 25:35-36 (NIV).

      Their destruction will be complete.

The peaceful meadows will be laid waste because of the fierce anger of the LORD.

      Jeremiah 25:37 (NIV).

All the people, whether they are good or bad, do not call on the true Name of God! Thus, all are cursed.

Like a lion he will leave his lair, and their land will become desolate because of the sword of the oppressor and because of the LORD's fierce anger.

      Jeremiah 25:38 (NIV).

After all of this, the religions will be exposed that they have deceived humanity because of the great deception that they have done to all the people of the world by making them (people) call on the false names they made up for the one true and living God! This is the cause of the curse from God. It is also the reason why we had wars.

Maestro asks: How important it is to know the true Name of God?

I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

      Joel 2:30-31 (NIV).

      How can we be saved?

And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;.

for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance,

as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.

      Joel 2:32 (NIV).

It is very clear, he who calls on the Name of God will be saved.

The people who will call on the Great Name of God. How will they be considered by God?

This third I will put into the fire;.

I will refine them like silver.

      and test them like gold.

They will call on my name.

      and I will answer them;.

I will say, ‘They are my people,’.

and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God. ’”

Zechariah 13:9 New International Version (NIV).

The people who will call on the Name of God will be called the People of God. It is no longer the people who are called by the Name.

This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit.

"What do you see, Amos?" he asked. "A basket of ripe fruit," I answered. Then the LORD said to me, "The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.

      Amos 8:1-2 (NIV).

“I will spare them no longer” – God is no longer with them!

Where is God in our pres

      Exodus 6:3

And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

      Isaiah 12:2

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

      Isaiah 26:4

Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

Aaron... You need to do your own, personal research on Charles Taze Russell. I'm not sure where you heard that (mormon), but your source is misleading. Let's just say, for the sake of argument, he was, at one time a mormon. So what! People evolve, change and mature each and every day. The same goes for spiritually. I was raised one religion, experienced many others and have finally found the one that bases their beliefs as closely to the bible than any religion I'm aware of. One more piece of advice... if you are commenting on my hub in an effort to cause problems or mock its content, don't bother!

Jesus did not die on a cross. A small amount of scientific research will prove that, this was not possible. Instead, he died on, either, an upright stake, or the body of a tree... which was true of deaths that occurred that way, and during that time. Jesus and his father, Jehovah are far from erroneous! I would simply advise you, to... open up your bible (specifically Psalms 83:18- unless you happen to have a bible where it was removed... more on that, later), and see for yourself. Unfortunately, too many people rely on the "advice" of their preachers to give them the truth (which will never happen), instead of studying Jehovah God's word for themselves. I'm sure you've heard the saying, "If you want it done right, do it yourself?" Well... that same saying applies here. If a person wants THE TRUTH about God, Jesus, reigion- whatever!- they need to stop listening to what everyone else is saying (yes!... even what you were taught, as a child, about these things), and do their OWN research. You'll be surprised at what you find! I know, I was;) Thanks for your reply. God Bless!

Did you know the letter J was not in existence in any language until 1400+ after the Messiah died on the cross? Names like Jehovah & Jesus are erroneous names. The letter J was the last letter inserted into our alphabet. (english) Yahweh (father) & Yahshua (son/holy spirit) are the correct names. A minor investigation will prove this. Thank you and Yah Bless! HalleluYah

To begin with, you are not giving accurate information. Secondly, none of your information comes from the holy bible... Jehovah God's only word. Many of the titles (which are NOT NAMES) on the site aren't even relevant here. The same is also true for the titles most people believe to be names... i.e. Lord, God, Father, etc. God has one name, and one name only. That can be found in the majority of different translations of the holy bible. You can find this "hidden" treasure at Psalm 83:18, which reads, "That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth." Many religions have distorted this fact, or taken it out of the bible all together. Fortunately, many righteous-hearted ones have seen to it that God's name remains intact, and present in the oldest biblical resources available. One sure way to tell whether or not a religion/or its teachings is the truth, is... if you cannot read/or comprehend what is being taught, or if you just don't understand what is being said by the leaders in your religion, you can rest assured... this is NOT the truth. Think about it. Would God, who loves us and wants us to be happy, give us something that is confusing or that we would not understand? He would not. God's people will be recognized by the fruitages of the spirit (not SOME of them- ALL of them!). I could tell you, one by one, why each of the statements you've cited above is false, but I will just take a couple. The one that talks about the hereafter... many people believe in this teaching. I will tell you why it is not true. First of all, we all inherited sin through our firstparent's disobedience to God (Adam and Eve). So you properly understand what "a soul" is, you have to read Genesis 2:7. The latter part of that verse reads, (talking about Adam) "blow into his nostrils the breath of life and man came to be a living soul." So... unlike the teachings of most, modern-day religions, a SOUL is not separate from the body and cannot exist apart from it. This scripture proves that a SOUL is the LIFE given to a person when they're born. Likewise, the SOUL dies when the body dies. You can find that scripture at Ezekiel 18:4, which- in part- reads (the end), "The soul that is sinning- it itself will die." IF the soul was able to live after death, then explain how it can also SIN while alive. It can't, because it's not a separate being from the body. They are one in the same. So... when we die, so, too, does "the soul." The last two statements... God being merciful/having plenty of mercy for believers, and He being king, lord, having complete dominion, clear from imperfection- the second one, of the two, is absolutely correct. The first one is true, in part. Many people believe all you have to do is "believe" and that will keep you in God's good favor. That is soooo FAR from the truth. Again... here's proof: James 2:26 reads, "Indeed, as the body without spirit is dead, so also FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD." Many people seem to "forget" this small fact. God obviously doesn't! With a little research and study of God's holy word, you, too, can discover the truth and the blessings our loving creator has to offer. Thanks for the reply=)
