What is Islam 101

(1) Meaning of Islam

  • Islam is ‘Submission to the Will of Allah’ (Deity, God).
  • Islam is derived from the word SALAAM (peace ), so it’s literal meaning is PEACE.
  • The people who practice Islam are referred to as MUSLIMS.

  • Zakaat (Alms giving) Muslims are supposed to give a fixed proportion of their savings (2.5%) for endeavours such as helping the poor. In this way, their wealth is “made pure”
  • Hajj (Pilgrimage) Muslims make a visit to the House of Allah in Makkah, once in a life time if one can afford in doing so.

      Hi Mr Happy,

Thank you so much for your comment and for taking the time to read my hub. I am delighted that you at least have the interest to understand others, that is a quality missing in people these days. After all we only can get on with each other if we as humans try to understand others and their way of living, through respect and sharing does society progress to a peaceful being.

Please let me know if you want and i'll send you info on how women in Islam are truly treated rather than the distorted image portrayed in the media.

      All the best.

I like the Zakaat part of Islam. That`s real compassion. I appreciate that. Muslims from the little I know are very hospitable and kind people (until you draw the prophet Muhhamed then, forget about it ... lol).

What I don`t particularly like about Islam is the way women have so few rights, so few jobs, positions of power and all. I have nothing to say against the hijab (I am not sure if I spelled it right) because I know many women chose to wear it themselves. Not wearing bikinis around all day showing certain body parts is not bad actually. Although at the beach going swiming in robes is a little odd.

Thanks for your time. (Just some thoughts of mine.)
