Where Is God in Our Heartache? (Poem)

Updated on December 15, 2012

I wrote this poem years ago for a mother-figure of mine when her husband of 30 years left her. This week I have been reminded of it again. Doctors found a cancerous brain tumor on a friend of ours who has a two year old and a pregnant wife. And again as I sobbed over the news of the loss of those precious children in Newtown, CT.

God's View

Creation complains

“If God loves, why the pain?

Where is justice and love?

Why the hurt; why the shame?”

But the world does not know

Your thoughts or Your ways

Your strength through the trials

Your longing to save

Your grace is sufficient

Your mercies are new

The victory’s Yours

Please grant us Your view

You’ll never abandon

Your Word tells us truth

To grieving Naomi

You provided a Ruth

In days of Elijah

A time with no rain

The widow in poverty

You blessed when she gave

Though Leah was lonely

She still praised You, LORD

And from her descendents

Jesus was born

The length of Your arm

Freed Peter from prison

Healed Naaman’s illness

Saved Daniel from lions

David knew guilt

And Paul had a thorn

In each of our struggles

May glory be yours

So when we are grieving

Or poor or alone

Or when we just hurt

We’ll trust that we’re known

When valleys are deep

And darkness surrounds

When the waves of each day

Threaten to drown

You were and You are

And You always will be

The same now and ever

The One in our need

Made in Your image

Redeemed by Your Son

Indwelt by Your Spirit

May Your will be done.

Thank you for reading and commenting visionandfocus. I appreciate your advice to seek alternative therapies. Changing my son's diet was our last resort to help him with his pain. And it worked!! He is off all medication now and has never felt better. Thank you for advocating living a healthy lifestyle instead of being dependent on medicine.

Beautiful poem and very apt at this heartbreaking time. So sorry to hear about your friend, but I must tell you that cancer need not be a death sentence. Pain, illness, disease--these are all messages from our bodies telling us that we need to evolve (change our lifestyles, resolve our issues, make peace with people we have not forgiven). I encourage you to introduce your friend to alternative therapies that can save his life and give his wife and children the father they deserve for many years to come. God bless.

Thank you for posting this! I will treasure it eternally!! The line "you provided a Ruth" brought tears to my eyes as I, again, reflected on the "Ruth" God provided for me! I pray others feel the love and Heart of Truth behind this poem!

Hi ktrap! I'm also glad you stumbled across the poem and were encouraged by it. I will pray that God gives you daily encouragement in lots of areas of your life. I definitely know the feeling of almost drowning. There is nothing fun about it.

ExpectGreatThings - I'm not sure how I came across your poem, but am so glad I did. I've been going through months of heartache that definitely "threaten[s] to drown." Your words are beautiful and a real comfort.
