The Truth about Lies

What would happen if everyone told the truth? It's actually very "revealing", if you've ever seen the movie “Liar, Liar” with Jim Carrey. In this movie, Carrey plays a father who consistently makes promises to his wife and child, yet continually fails to keep them. When he promised to be home for his son's birthday party and didn't show, his son made a wish that for once, his Dad would only be able to tell the truth! Watch what happens when this little boy’s wish comes TRUE:

Speaking Your MIND

Did anyone see episode 17 of Season 5 of House? It’s called “The Social Contract”. In this episode, a patient suddenly loses his “inhibitions” causing him to speak his MIND, having no control over what he says. He tells only the truth and is desperate to get “fixed” so he can go back to being able to "control his tongue” by not being so honest, in order to keep from driving everyone in his life away. Here’s a glimpse of this episode, as longer videos were not available on Youtube:

The Science of Detecting LIES

How about this one ~ have you seen the television series called “Lie to Me”? It’s shocking to know that every person lies an average of three times every ten minutes! Because lies are so prominent within humanity, authorities go to great lengths to expose liars and lies. Lie Detectors have not been proven to be reliable, but experts in body language have proven consistent behavioral evidence to expose liars and their lies! Here’s a brief clip from “Lie to Me”:

Prov 26:28 "A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a flattering mouth works ruin."
Prov 26:28 "A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a flattering mouth works ruin."

The Sad Truth

It’s obvious that if everyone truly spoke what was on their MINDS, many would be greatly offended! What would this world be like? We’ve learned as a society that lies bring peace and harmony, yet truth brings offense. If you told your boss the truth, would you lose your job? If you told your spouse the truth, would you lose your marriage? If someone told you the truth, would you become angry and end the relationship? The sad truth is people have learned to survive in this world by lying.

As I’ve questioned in other hubs, “What makes a good liar?”; “What makes an excellent liar?” The fact is, the better the liar, the more believable the lie. What about the “father of lies”? Is it even possible to know the difference between truth and his lies? Jesus said even the “elect” of God could be deceived by Satan, if it were possible.

Truly, the truth lies in the heart. The heart reveals the true man. Jesus said in Mat 15:18, “The things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.” Mark records even more of what Jesus said in Mark 7:21: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.”

No matter what comes out of a person’s mouth, God sees the truth. He sees the heart. Jesus said in Mat 12:34, “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” Is this truth offensive? Should He lie to you? God cannot lie!

Did you notice that what comes out of the heart naturally breaks the 10 Commandments given by God? Do you know WHY God gave the 10 Commandments? Did He think people could actually keep them? Maybe they could, as a matter of self-discipline, but not so much in the heart! He gave them to convict the world of sin. To help us realize we are in need of a Savior! This is why He went so far as to say in Mat 5:27-28, “You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

He put it in writing!
He put it in writing!

Deception of the Heart

Can people LIE to themselves and to God? Jesus said in Mat 15:8, “These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.”

In James 1:26 we are told, “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.” Does this mean we are to lie? Absolutely not! We should let our mouths speak what comes from our heart, in truth and in love.

How is that possible? There is no way for man to change his heart. Only God can do this, and it’s through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. We obtain that faith by hearing and reading His Word. Have you ever trusted just in what somebody said to you? Or do you feel more secure if they put it in writing? Well, God put His Word in writing! Unlike a father who does not keep his word, He is our Father who keeps His Word!

We need to be filled with truth in order to walk in truth. Jesus said in John 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” Because the Spirit of truth now dwells in us, we won’t fear speaking the truth because the truth we speak will give life to the hearer.

The Apostle Paul said in Galatians 4:16, “So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?” If you feel offended by the Word of God, you should know there is a problem.

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Who Can Change Hearts and Minds?

Jesus creates in us a clean heart. This happens through putting our faith in Him, bringing a transformation of the MIND.

Psalm 51:10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Acts 15:9: “…cleansing their hearts by faith.”

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your MIND.”

Yes, believers will still struggle with sin, but to acknowledge the truth, that we are sinful, is to say the Law is good! Instead of being convicted and sentenced, we are convicted and acquitted in Jesus’ Name!

Romans 7:16-17: “But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.”

Romans 7:21-Romans 8:1: “I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the Law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my MIND and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my MIND am serving the Law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

He will turn your sorrow...
He will turn your sorrow...
...into JOY!
...into JOY!

How do people get set free? As it is with AA and NA, even Alanon, people must get honest with themselves and others. Admit we have a problem; for in doing so, we begin the freedom process! Has your child ever lied to you? How do you feel when your child admits his/her wrong-doing and confesses the truth to you? You most likely will have mercy upon your child and be glad they are becoming a person of respectable character. Likewise, our Father in heaven desires that we confess our sins to Him.

Romans 10:10: “For with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

1 John 1:9 states, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Do you trust Man? Do you trust Truth? Receive and walk in the Truth today! Jesus said in John 14:6, “I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life!”

John 8:32 “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed!”

If you don’t know Jesus today, but are feeling drawn to the Truth, I invite you to read my hub Come to JESUS: Salvation. He wants to set you free, from the inside out! And THAT’S THE TRUTH!

funnychap! How good to see you! Thank you for your comment. Lies are a fascinating study and topic. It surely helps us become aware of ourselves and our true feelings and thoughts. No matter what comes out of our mouths, the truth lies in the heart. Sometimes it's hard to find that truth, and oftentimes our behaviors reveal it (I think of abused children in counseling that won't 'tell', but draw pictures that reveal this). May the LORD keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus and keep us from deception. God bless you, and thanks again for reading and commenting!

very nice hub! well written (as always) & for quitnessandtrust, i just wanted to mention that both the scripture as well as example given by him, the lie has been said to save human life. So i guess, you could compromise on the truth if it is to save human life which is the most beautiful of God's creation, but other then that it is always the Truth that should be held on at all costs.

Well, welcome to HubPages, dianalee! What a refreshing testimony! Praise God He answered you right away by showing you the Truth, which is Jesus Christ ~ and His Spirit in you is the Spirit of Truth; AMEN!!

One of my fellow hubbers, no body, just wrote a hub focusing on Phil 4:8 ~ the first is focusing on TRUTH. It may be a blessing to you to read as it was for me!

Jesus said to Pilate in John 18:37, "For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." God bless you!!

I have just joined HubPages, and so am just now reading this hub. One of the things that contributed to my being saved was asking: What is the TRUTH? So much deception, opinion, make-believe abounds. But God is faithful, and he shortly showed me the Truth..... Jesus.

Also LOVE your Lion and Lamb picture.

Hi brother Gicky! Amen! You certainly have a way of clearly stating what's going on in the U.S. and the world as relates to secular humanism. Praise God, this hub might minister to those caught up in it; and I do pray the Holy Spirit accomplish His work in calling us back to the basic truth, acknowleding it is only Christ who can change us when we submit our will to His. Thank you so much for the words of encouragement! God bless you as you've blessed me and so many others!!

It's truly refreshing to hear your hub expose the truth about sin - how we struggle with the deceitfulness of sin and how we are in desperate need of a Savior. As you stated, the Ten Commandments convicts the world of sin as well as points us to Christ - the ultimate bearer of our sin. In a day when secular humanism has infiltrated the ranks of evangelicalism and watered down sin with a man-centered message of positivism, this article goes against the grain of that movement. Kudos to you for standing up to the truth concerning sin in a God-centered hub - a no-holds-barred, back to basics understanding of what it means to be transformed from our sin-riddled fallen state by God's grace and truth. All blessings on your writing ministry.

Exodus 1:15-21 ~~~ please read and get back to us on that =)

Did those women lie and then get blessed by GOD for it?

Or did they fear GOD and do what was the righteous thing and ignore the orders of the government?

There is a difference between "the facts" and "the truth"...the truth comes from GOD and the facts come from men.

You are a German in the time when Hitler was searching for Jews hiding among his own German people, those who had compassion on them and hid them in their homes, barns, businesses, etc (like Shindler and many others who's story is not so famous).

The Germans knock on your door and ask point blank "are you hiding Jews?"

and you tell them no, and yet you have 6 in your basement behind a false wall.

What have you done? What are the facts and what is the truth? Where is your love?

Remember that the truth always stems from the love of the brethren.

Remember when Rahab hid the spies?

If she had sold them out in order to tell the facts,

would she have honored the truth in love?

gkarlene50, I would love to read a hub by you just on the tongue! While the tongue can be used for lying (and most likely is the #1 use), it can be used for cursing God, verbal abuse, angry outbursts, gossip and slander...the list goes on and on. The fruit of the Spirit is self-control, meaning we are to be controlled by the Spirit of God. We should have that "check" in our spirit when we are tempted to use our tongue to speak lies or any of these things. Again, it comes from what's in the heart. Lord, change our hearts, for then our tongues will speak glory to Your Name and bring life to the hearer! God bless you, sister :-)

allpurposeguru, it's true that we need to pick our battles in some cases ~ we may have an answer, but not everyone wants to hear it. The Bible says to be ready to give an answer.

That's a really good exercise for all of us ~ if we are struggling with speaking up or tempted to lie, we examine our hearts immediately to get to know ourselves and how to pray specifically for God's help. God be with us :-)

Brother no body, when we know we've sinned we're like a puppy who just placed a deposit on the livingroom floor :-/ We cower a bit before the Lord, but while we know we deserve discipline, He sees we are already aware of our sin (which is a good thing) and are wanting that loving fellowship with Him and in Him. For the heart that desires to become more like Jesus, He will be faithful to complete the work He started in us until He comes again! Practice makes perfect (complete). Speaking the truth can feel more freeing than the conviction and havoc lies bring, for sure!

Judah's Daughter this gives much insight to lies and people who lie, and the truth. I really enjoyed reading it. And I had been thinking on this subject, but you have done an excellent job.

My point would have been mainly focused on the tongue, and lies are spoken through the tongue.

      Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue;

      Book of James:

3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

3:7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

And to sum it up, regarding the sad Truth:

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good truths, without partiaiity, and without hypocrisy.

It is better to trust in the Word of God than to put confidence in the word of man.

So, I try to stay on the Lord's side, and I try to get more and more and as much as I can get from the Word of God.

Great Hub. You remind me that we can speak our minds or not, but we cannot speak the truth unless we know it (or better, know Him). I'm not sure that holding back from speaking my mind is necessarily a lie, but it might well be a means of ducking examining what's in my mind that I see the need to hold back speaking it.

In this twisted world and in our sinful bodies I can see where one could think there is a place for lying. I am most tempted to lie when I feel a lie is going to hurt someone or I will be exposed in a sin I have been covering up. My sin of lying feels like it is covering the other sin but it isn't. God's Spirit is grieved and He withdraws fellowship until I get it right. And I also get pressure from Satan, the one that urged the lie in the first place. He says, "How can you preach to others, you are nothing but a liar. You hypocrite!" I may listen to him but what usually happens is I RUN to Jesus and tell Him everything. I admit my wrong and He'll bring me to the 1John 1:8 principle. "If I confess my sin, the Lord is faithful and just to forgive my sin and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. And so the battle rages on, each temptation, each sin, each confession, until Jesus come and destroys this body of sin and gives me one that is like His. I love you so much my sister.

How would that lie create positive results? He'd go buy some more and continue in his drug habit. Have you helped anyone? Absolutely not. God be with you, sister. Please ~ go to Alanon as soon as possible.

Hi Pastor DTW! It's AMAZING the stats on lies! I pray that the Truth will be as living water to those accustomed to the desert of hearing lies 24-7. I pray that the Truth will pierce through to the souls of all who hear it, that they will know they can trust the love of Christ every moment of every day. Lies are like quicksand; one lie leads to another and another. It becomes habitual and destructive! Jesus is here to reach out and pull us out! Praise God! Hi brother Quill! I'm so glad you mentioned "masks" (another great movie with Jim Carey). Truly he wore that mask to cover up his fear, but in the end when he found out the mask was dangerous and got rid of it, what was in his heart proved he really was great guy!

Lies do serve as a "mask": a false smile when there's hatred, friendship when there's envy, arrogance when there's fear; relationship for many things. I pray the truth of the danger of these masks is realized by all who wear them.

I pray the very character of Jesus fill our hearts and manifest in everything we do ~ especially telling the truth when the truth must be told. God bless you!

Yet another great hub judas daughter! I geet with the Lord every morning and the Lord brought to my mind where i had lied. I grew up in an alcohoic home and lieing was a way of life. I've pretty much gotten away from that, but every now and then I lie to save my own skin. i've repented and with Gods help I won't take that path again. All liars do not make it to heaven. I am a member of AA and thats where I learned my coping skills, Praise the Lord. I had gotten in the habit of always telling the truth but lately slipped up. Satan is always trying to get us to follow him. I have come a long way, but until I always tell the truth i haven't reached the mark. Thank God for time with Him every morning. I pray for Him to show me where I need to make changes, then i pray for Him to help me. As we cannot make changes in ourselves outside of Christs help. I stayed up till 2:00 am looking at your hubs. I was so blessed! I printed many of them to study later. We can tell the truth all the time just word things the way Jesus would tell someone the truth. God bless You! Look forward to all your new hubs yet to be written. I am a real fan!
