Who Am I
Who Am I?
We all need to ask ourselves that very simple and basic question.
Most of us think we have, but I am guessing we have more likely asked ourselves either:
What Do YOU Think Of Me?
In YOUR Eyes, Who Am I?
How Do YOU See Me?
Yes, most of us are more concerned about how other people see us or how other people will define us. (Most times we are so busy thinking about what other people might say about us, so sometimes we might sugarcoat who we really are).
And so you in your professional website, in the profile of your homepage and in your many social networking sites, including your blogs and your hubs, you would probably say:
I am Banker, or I am a Freelance Writer, or I am an Electrical Engineer, or I am studying to be a Medical Doctor…
But I say that is not who you are.
That might be WHAT you do, but that is not WHO you are.
I am Married, I am Engaged To Be Married, I am a Divorcee, I am a Widower, I am a Mother of two, I am Single by choice…
That is not who you are, yes your status maybe, but still not who you are.
I am In-Between Jobs, I am a Struggling Writer, Songwriter, Musician, Actor, Comedian, anybody whose struggling you name it, that’s me…
You know that is not who you are, that might be where you are right now, but still not who you are.
I love Cats, I am a Dog Lover, I love Horses, I love Fast Cars, I love Monster Trucks, I love Baseball, I love Wrestling, I love Hockey, I love LeBron James, I love Kobe, I love Taylor Swift, I love Ice Cream…
What do you think? That is still not who you are.
I love Baking, I love Hiking, I love Sudoku, I love Shopping, I love Snuggling In Bed, I love Reading, I love Walking in the Rain, I love watching the Sun Set, I love Stargazing, I love the Beach…
It feels like I love everything else, except… myself…
Yes, it does feel like that sometimes, you know what you do, you know where you are in your life, you know what you want, you know what you like, you know what you love, but do you love who you are?
But how could we?
When most of the time, we do not even know who we really are.
So who are you?
Jackie Chan in a movie that he made in the late 1990s, asked the same question.
There was a scene in that movie where he is shown standing on top of roof of some structure, he has his arms outstretched over his head, head up and then he yelled to the top of his voice, “WHOOO AM I?”
In the inside, most of us are like him, we do this, we do that, we study this, we study that, we finish this, we accomplish that, we strive for this, we acquire that, we trade this for that, we kill ourselves in the pursuit of this and that and everything else but after all of that, there is still that silent voice inside us asking, “Who am I?”
Worse after all this time, it might be now asking, “What have you become?”
By the way, Jackie Chan in that movie was called Who Am I. For I believe he was in a mission which went wrong, he hit his head, lost consciousness and when he woke up he found out that he lost his memory and so when somebody found him and asked him who he was, he muttered, “Who am I”. And they thought that was his name.
Funny huh?
Not really, because for most of us, that is all so real.
Do you know who you are?
Do you know what you have become?
Do you know where you’re going to? Do you like the things that life’s been showing you? Where are you going to? Do you know?
Yes, as asked by Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Tina Arena, and so many others in between and after them since the 1970s.
Well do you?
Even King David of Goliath fame back in the Old Testament ask about the very same thing in one of his Psalms as a way to ask (his) God Himself. He said something like:
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
What is man (Who am I) that you are mindful of him (me)
the son of man (Who am I) that you care for him (me)?
Yes, who are you really?
Think about it.
Who am I?
