Astrology Sun Signs - Meet Aquarius - January 21st - February 19th

Updated on September 1, 2015

Recognizing Aquarius

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.

One day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then, oh why can't I?

Dreamers chase rainbows, children colour them, and songwriters have been known to pen a few words about them from time to time but the one person who truly understands them is an Aquarian. Water bearers are the "quirky uncles" of the zodiac - truly walking to the beat of a different drum.

Realists, non conformers, and unpredictable, Aquarians will deliberately adopt strange attire or hairstyles in order to stand out from the crowd. They delight in shocking the more conventional signs, and enjoy defying public opinion! These soft spoken, courteous souls can startle you with the most amazing statements or actions, and always at inopportune or unpredictable times.

Aquarius the water bearer

Physical attributes

If you want to spot the Aquarian in your midst, simply look for the tall, eccentrically dressed, blonde - the one with the far away look in his blue, green, or grey eyes. Aquarius generally has a vague, dreamy or wandering look on his face. Water bearers have a markedly noble profile, reminiscent of Roman emperors - finely chiseled, and often adopt a pose of cocking their heads, or dropping forward abruptly when they are thinking, or when awaiting the answer to a question.

Because of dual sexuality of Uranus, you will notice feminine characteristics in males, such as broad hips for example, and male characteristics in females, like broad shoulders.

The water bearers temperament

Uranians are free spirits, funny, original and independent. They will almost always seek the comfort and security of crowds, and surround himself with friendship. Then in a typical 360 degree turn, they will become gloomy, morose and lonely - wanting to be left strictly alone! But regardless of which way he is turning, he will keep his sharp perception.

Aquarius is a natural rebel who feels instictively that old customs are wrong, and feels that what the world need now isn't love sweet love, but revolutionary change! He is always analyzing situations and people. It can be rather disturbing when he starts asking questions with the bare minimum of tact.

After he realizes the puzzle wasn't as complicated as he thought, he becomes bored. When you relate this action with a person, you can see how people can be upset with this sign. Just after being convinced that you are the most important person on the face of the planet it stings when the water bearer drops you like a hot potato and moves on to his next interest.

Even though Aquarians fixate on friendship, they don't have many intimate confidants. This is one sign that goes for quality over quantity, and they rarely settle down in a steady relationship for's the boredom thing again.

There is a sense of isolation around this sign. Water bearers are generally misunderstood by the rest of us, and that is mainly because we haven't caught up to them yet. They live in the future, and come back only briefly to the present which deepens the isolation. And just because the rest of us can't keep up is no reason for them (in their opinion) to go backwards. So Aquarius generally wanders among the clouds alone, while we mere mortals wonder exactly what he's doing up there.

This sun sign is known as the sign of genius, and upwards of seventy percent of the people in the Hall of Fame prove it by being either Aquarians or have Aquarian ascendants. However, a substantially high percentage of psychiatrist's patients, and psych ward guests are also Aquarians...showing us there is a very fine line between genius and insanity. I can honestly say, my Aquarian friend keeps me guessing!

Water bearers are a curious mix of eccentric instability and cold, practicality. They have a peculiar empathy with the mentally disturbed, and can substantially reduce the anxiety of the insane simply by speaking to them quietly - no word of a lie! They have a knack for calming hysterical people and soothing frightened children.

Aquarians have such broad outlooks that it is extremely rare to find one who is prejudiced and intolerant. He is friends with Princes and paupers alike, gathering the waters of knowledge and pouring them back out again.

You can expect the Uranus born to give a frank opinion, but he will never tell you how you should think or live your life, and conversely, he will never let you tell him how he should think or live his. His philosophy is live and let live. Aquarius rarely fights fiercely for a cause, letting the other signs take up the quarrel. He is too busy trying to figure out the cause of the revolution and doesn't have time to join it.

Don't get me wrong, water bearers are no cowards, they just aren't geared for fighting. If one does catch him unawares, you can be sure his reaction will be unpredictable, but his thinking will remain constant, and his opinion will be as fixed tomorrow as it is today. Typical Aquarians fight best with their hats...they put them on and leave!

He won't budge in the least - regardless of his distaste for unpleasant confrontations. All the shouting in the world won't stop him from going his own way. He also has an obstanate way of not letting you know what he is up to, and they are full of surprises.

Once you have been accepted, and thoroughly scrutinized, his friendship and loyalty won't be shaken by even malicious gossip. He won't believe a word, however, he will listen out of sheer curiosity! However, once he forms an opinion, it remains fixed in his brain...and I do mean fixed!

The typical Aquarian is the embodiment of the absent-minded professor, yet his powers of concentration can be awesome...when they choose. Never underestimate their process of soaking up information even if they seem oblivious. They have the uncanny ability to dive into the unknown and absorb mystical secrets, and the majority of them are highly intuitive, giving them a high degree of psychic precognition - like answering the phone before it rings.

Water bearers despise lying and cheating, and avoid borrowing and lending money. They will give you money as a gift, but don't ask them for a loan. A broken promise or bad debt can put a very wide crack in your friendship. Aquarians keep their word and pay their bills, and they expect everyone else to do the same.

In conclusion

Aquarius is ahead of his time - so much so that you will have trouble catching his viewpoint immediately, but it's still worthwhile to make the attempt. You will always come away a little wiser, and probably a little bewildered. His astrological flower is the daffodil - where did you think the term 'daffy' came from?

He knows most dreams are illusions, like the rainbow he knows and loves. His mind and body are free as the wind and as impossible to pin down as trying to stuff a genie into a bottle once it's let out. It can't be done - and who would want to try anyway?

Near true predictions to a large extent. Nice and binding write-ups.

I haven't found any Aquarians that I've known to be cold-hearted and ruthless, but I think that trait is reserved for bankers, lawyers and politicians LOL

Good article in the sense that you looked at it from a variety of angles. I have the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Midheaven in Aquarius, and Uranus on an angle aspecting all the former bar Jupiter, and Uranus aspects my Ascendant (in Gemini) as well. So I'm quite 'Uranian'.

I wouldn't say I'm absent-minded - and people around me haven't ever accused me of being so - but I tend to write lists if I need to remember more than a few things. I have never exhibited, or embodied, anything close to genius, but I'm not thick either... I can be erratic in relationships of all kinds, in so far as I can easily go for many months without seeing or speaking to people; this is due to simply being busy in general...

I've known other Aquarians in my life and (I probably sound biased, being one of their ilk), truthfully, I liked them a lot. They had well-developed senses of humour and weren't inclined to 'smother' me. I suppose the one trait they all had in common was that they could be overly steadfast in their opinions to the extent of downright stubbornness, even when empirical facts were presented to them demonstrating the contrary. That was the only collective shortcoming that I noticed.

The latest assumption of this Sun Sign that's been cropping up of late is that Aquarians are cold-hearted and ruthless, even cruel. Well, North Korea's Kim Jong II (an Aquarius Sun) certainly hasn't been representing our one-twelfth of the zodiac well lately, but I honestly think most Aquarians (particularly the female natives) are fine...

Hi Penny - actually, everything you said about your dad fits Aquarius, they are loyal, gregarious and believe it or not, quite a few are conservative. I should have put that in, in retrospect lol...

Much of this did not fit my Dad. He was married all his life to my mother; was conservative; very friendly...loved people; was loyal, etc. Maybe he was on the fringe of this astrological sign...Jan. 31st? I really do not know much about this subject but find it interesting none-the-less. Thanks!

Great hub Enelle - you are certainly right about that fixed opinion - once the Aquarian has made up their mind about something it is indeed engraved in stone, and though they may appear or even be very conservative in some ways, they are very much free thinkers. Well done!

Two of my Aquarian friends are at opposite ends of the spectrum you have so ably demarked.

vrajavala - I will have to do some reading! It's always good to explore other avenues :) thanks so much for coming by to comment.

FP- You are right - Aquarians are quite conservative in many ways - study in contrasts LOL and you are also right on about being tidy! Pisces is in the works my friend LOL

advisor4qb - Thanks! Glad you liked it :D

Strangely all the Aquarians I know are pretty conservative in their thinking! One thing I've noticed about people born in February is their obsession for tidying things up!

      Waiting for Pisces, Enelle...:)

Hindu astrology puts a lot more emphasis on the sign that the Moon occupies (sidereal). The sages say the Moon governs the mind. Western astrology is just a little too ambiguous for me. But, keep up the good work.

My son is an Aquarius (sidereal, but with a Sagittarian Moon. Funny, but he's not very unconventional, shaves his head, does like conspiracy theories, which I now believe; The Moon occupies a lunar nakshatra, which are further divided into "padas" and, believe it or not, you might even be able to rectify a birth time by matching the characteristics of the "pada" native with the person you know. Anyway nice to meet you.

Wow! You really got this one down pat. This describes my ex-husband to a T. Mind you, he may be my ex-husband but we are still good friends. The only thing that doesn't fit him is the line:

"they rarely settle down in a steady relationship for long..." We were together for 14 years and married for 12 of those years. I really enjoyed this hub.

      Thanks so much, Erica
