Believers 911

Updated on June 15, 2009

Psalm 91

After 9/11 I was leading a women's Bible study. A woman referred to Psalm 91 and declared this is the believer's 911. We took time to read it carefully and realized that within the psalm there was not only a petition for protection from the daily routines of life but for vast concerns as well. Over the years I have heard a variety of teachings on Psalm 91 and it's power when used as a tool for prayer.

Using God's word to pray is a powerful tool. Often times it is difficult to find the words to pray when there is much to be concerned about. Praying scripture with faith empowers us to live life boldly. Whenever there is a crisis at a personal level or even national this psalm is the one I turn to. I have used this prayer to pray for my children as they go off to school and for family and friends facing difficult situations. Recently a televison evangelist shared that he and his family specifically prayed these words from the psalm, "A thousand may fall at my side and ten thousand at my right hand but it will not come near me." He was convinced that this prayer coupled with belief was the "best flu shot" around.

When we look closely at the psalm we can divide it into five parts. Psalm 91:1-2 addresses the state of godly (righteous). Verses 3-8 talks about the safety of the  true believer. The following verses, 9 & 10, tell about the habitation of God's children.  The chapter continues with the charge of protection that is given to one who walks with God in verses 11-13. The psalm ends with the blessing of closeness to God.

The psalm opens with reference to four names for God: Most High, Almighty, Jehovah, Mighty God.Perhaps the most eye opening verse in this scripture is the 9th verse because it indicates that the Lord has reasons for protecting His own.Verse 10 gives personal and domestic blessing; as well as connection between the two.

Verses 14-16 state six I wills by God. Due to the saints love for God the psalms states, "I will deliver him.." Because of the saint's honour for God the pslam continues with, "I will set him on high."  Perhaps the most precious promises following: 1. Answer to prayer, 2. Comfort in trouble. 3.Deliverence from trouble. 4.Greater honour after trouble. 5.Life long enough to satisfy. 6."Show him My salvation", this is going beyond what man can comprehend.

The awesome words of Psalm 91 can be prayed for our country and our families. Below is a youtube video that puts this psalm into a prayer.    Blessing!

Psalm 91 The Message Bible

1HE WHO dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].

2I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust!

3For [then] He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.

4[Then] He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler.

5You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that flies by day,

6Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday.

7A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

8Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked.

9Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place,

10There shall no evil befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent.

11For He will give His angels [especial] charge over you to accompany and defend and preserve you in all your ways [of obedience and service].

12They shall bear you up on their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent shall you trample underfoot.

14Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness--trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

15He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

16With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation.

He will give His angels charge over you.
